Then how do you explain I have a working 12.4GiB RamDisk on XP SP3, on a machine having 16GiB? You just need this version of the Gavotte and to set these values in the registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management] "DisablePagingExecutive"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RRamdisk\Parameters] "UsePAE"=dword:00000001 and these command-line options to boot.ini (in case you want PAE but not DEP, else the default is OK): /noexecute=alwaysoff /fastdetect /pae Believe me: this is quite old news.

every new computer interface SUCKS, sticking with winME
dencorso replied to ZortMcGort11's topic in Windows 9x/ME
So... that's something I wasn't aware of: what have you developed for XP SP3, if I may ask? -
To create a big ramdisk all one needs is the Gavotte Ramdisk, which is free and has been available for a long time. None of Dibya's mods are required for it.

I think Vista users should give precisely v. 4.4.304.0 a shot. Maybe it'll be necessary, after installing, to use heinoganda's updater v. 1.5 for the initial updating of the definitions on the newly installed MSE, but I think it probably should be able to auto-update after that (although heinoganda's updater v. 1.5 is the only way to keep it up-to-date on XP, nowadays)...

About disabling Aero Glass by Creators Update

Stop posting everywhere and wait! -
There'll be no more security bulletins, starting this month, AFAIK.

Both new 1TB drives are WD1003FZEX... that makes sense. But I really doubt the old one also is a WD1003FZEX. Are you sure all 3 HDDs are the same model?

That is way too much for the common user, who, moreover, usually got his 10 pre-installed in a notebook, in my experience. @NoelC: OK, but your tool should be enough to prevent most of the undesired and untimely updates and reboots that infuriates and despairs people, while being very easy to use, a must for the common user. That's what makes your tool precious. Of course, the best solution is to stay away from 10, but that is becoming less and less an option, by the day, unfortunately.

Android is Now More Popular than Windows Worldwide

In other words, "computing", nowadays, is what "computing" really is not! An oxymoron, maybe, but nevertheless, true. -
I think I remember there was a tool that enables one to disable automatic updates on Win 10. Am I remembering it wrong? Is it maybe KB3073930? Please advise. Later edit: Found it! What I had in mind is @NoelC's ConfigureAutomaticUpdates. I understand it remains working well just as it did when originally released, right?

That is the manual procedure, all right! But you may just use @heinoganda's updater v.1.5 daily, if you want, and it does it all automagically.
-
@heinoganda: Thanks a lot! v.1.5 works beautifully! I'm back to current definitions! You rock! @Bersaglio: Thanks to you, too, for the swift reply and great advice! You do rock, too!

@heinoganda: I'm getting from MSE this message: "The virus and spyware definitions didn't update on 01/04/2017, 2:17 AM because of an Internet or network connectivity problem." Your MSE updater does work, but downloads the same update since March 29. My internet connection is working OK, so problem is not here. Can you help? And, BTW, in which folder do last update files remain, so that I can transfer the most recent I have back to this machine? How can I give the update files manually to MSE? I used the RAUE option and now I'm without any virus and spyware definitions on this machine... Later edit: Well, I figured the last update should be in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\Definition Updates\{<some number>}", copied it back to this installaion and restarted MSE, which recognized the files. So far, so good: I'm back to the v.1.239.365.0 definitions, from 03/29/2017. But the new mpam-fe.exe from today, that I've just downloaded, still refuses to install. I count on your help.

BACKGROUND: My client was hit by a crypto ransomware. The machine has Windows 8.1. However, his disk was partitioned and all datafiles were in disk D:, which is FAT-32. I have created a copy of the D: disk, from which I have already recovered some files still intact, so I have reason to believe the ransomware was not able to encrypt the whole contents of that disk. The folder I recovered contained assorted .jpg .gif .doc .docx and .pdf files, all of them intact, and all those types of files are usually targeted by that malware. However, some other files did get encrypted. I verified that when .pdfs are encrypted they keep the name but the %PDF signature at their 1st four bytes disappears. I intend to do a fast evaluation of how far did the encryptation go, so I thought of transversing the D: tree looking for .pdfs inside each folder, and when found check their 4 1st bytes and output the fully qualified file name to a text log, folowed by "OK" or "BAD". However, to do such a task with a .cmd requires much more ability at batch writing than I do command. Would you please help me, at least, get started? Thanks a lot in advance.

Not really. In case it needs more than about 3.3 GiB 64-bit adressing would be required. But no game able to run on 98SE ever needed even half that much, ever, really.

Because IE 11 is not supported in 8... I see it on 7 every time I start IE 10, after a fresh reboot...

If they run 10 x32, they ought to run 7 x32 even better. You sure they don't?

Is there a console tool for importing security certificates?
dencorso replied to dencorso's topic in Windows XP
Wow! Thanks! I'll test it as soon as I get home! You rock! -
Ditto! I'd like to import .cer or .crt files from a for loop command line. Please advise.

Well, I can offer you some further clarifications: links to official MS servers are OK, links to the Internet Archive image of official MS servers and to Digital River (which actually is MS, too) are also OK, when existing, but anything else is "unauthorized redistribution", and hence, against our Rule #1. Please notice that the reason that rule exists is not so much to protect MS's interests, or to hamper our members' freedom, but to actually protect MSFN from trouble. Thank you for your understanding!
