How to archive old floppies for access under Win98
dencorso replied to Multibooter's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Way back when... at a time when DISKEDIT.EXE was known as NU.EXE. But before that there was DEBUG.EXE (or, better, DEBUG.COM)... . And even before that, DDT86.CMD (or, better, DDT.COM)... Yea, been there, done that......and we liked it! -
While it works OK even with Office 97 under Win XP (I know, I use it in XP), the Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack doesn't work with Win9x/ME. But this will solve your problem: link

Well... maybe. Do read this.

Also try looking around here (link).

Well, it's complicated... but you've got the gist of it. Let me tell you some more: to some among us, any instance of replying to one's self (instead of editing one's last post to add content) constitutes bumping. To others, me included, bumping only occurs when the reply to one's self has no new content (or no content whatever), while replying to one's own posts is not bumping when used to add new content, particularly in the case one wishes to avoid overlong posts, or to divide different (but related) subjects (as totally unrelated subjects warrant different threads, however). Nonetheless it *is* controversial, and with no consensus in sight, so it should be avoided, as much as possible, but not at all costs. Very rarely, when one has a really long winded text to post, one might even post two or three posts in succession, containing, each, a part of the main post (and this cannot possibly be said to bump the thread because it'll already be at the top, after the first post). After being here for some time, you surely will find examples of all these cases. In any case, the more usual procedure would be to edit one's last post to add new content, as much as one wants (until someone else actualy replies to it), so that the thread doesn't go to the top again too soon.

Yes. Read the Rules. # 2c, in particular. And welcome to MSFN!

Are you kidding? He's far beyond all that! He's The Finder *and* The Lord of IPL and Booting Matters! FAT32. NTFS is a no-no.

No. No reason at all. It should work. And yes, my mobo has native USB 2.0 capabilites. Try with NUSB 2.4, as it is. If it doesn't work, then you might think about upgrading to 3.3, not before. The .INF in 3.3 is more complete, but most of the difference regards USB 2.0, so it's irrelevant for you, right now. Good luck!
-
At present, unfortunately, yes. However, since you said you have stactic IP, maybe we can find a way to whitelist your IP. Please do PM me with your IP number. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience this is causing all our long-standing and valued Polish members. I'm glad, however, that you remain with us! It's good to have you around. You rock!

I agree. It's always wise to remain on the safe side.

I was unable to contribute till now, because I had a program processing in Win XP which I didn't want to interrupt, and it took three days to finish. Now I've rebooted into Win 98SE and did some tests: NUSB 3.3 has recognized each of two different USB HUBs I plugged into the ports. One is a USB 1.1 HUB (VID = 03EB [=Atmel Corp.] PID = 0902) and the other a USB 2.0 HUB (VID = 05E3 [=Genesys Logic, Inc.] PID = 0608). For the recognition of the former nothing was required, and for the latter it displayed the "Add Driver" dialog box (as usual) and I clicked OK as needed (as usual), and NUSB took over (as usual), and that's all. Both get labeled "Generic USB Hub". Both are seen by USBView 5.1.2600.2180, and both work perfectly. So, IMHO, you'll need to do nothing, just plug the monitor's hub into a port, and it'll simply work. YMMV, but I sincerely doubt you'll need anything more than plain vanilla NUSB 3.3 for it to work OK. BTW, of course, if you just plug in the hub, while you don't attach any storage device to it you'll not have the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the tray, because there is nothing to stop in a hub. Good luck!

@joe sixpack: Did you enter BIOS, go to "Advanced" -> "I/O Device Configuration" -> "Onboard ATA Boot ROM" and set it to "Enabled"? If not, do it! It'll just work.

Your modifications to the USB services are not enough. Normal Windows (not PE) will only boot from C:\, not from X:\ (which is fine, because, when you invoke the ASUS boot meny, by pressing <Esc> during early boot, you'll set the USB HDD as first device, so it automatically becomes hd0, i. e., C:). No wonder Windows is not finding the file: the registry is full of references to X:\, isn't it? You're *are* very near already. But an extra push is still needed. Later edit: You'll find this boot-land thread most interesting.

How to archive old floppies for access under Win98
dencorso replied to Multibooter's topic in Windows 9x/ME
The author of Slowdown, Bret Johnson, has a new home page http://bretjohnson.us/ He also posted there a new DOS USB driver a few days ago. There is no particular reason that I am using v1.01, it has just worked fine for me with VGA-Copy v5.3 during the past 9 years. After your post #29 made me aware of it, I hunted for all versions of it, and eventually found them. So I decided to make available here v.1.01 because that one is difficult to find *and worked for me also in Win XP*, while v.3.10 did not (in XP, of course... that's my experience, but YMMV here too). But I decided to include v.3.10 also, because they're very different programs and v.3.10 is very useful outside the NT-family OSes, *and* because of the fantastic slowdown.doc that accompanies it. Bret Johnson is a very thorough documenter, and his manuals are a great and enlightening read (same applies to usbintro.doc in the USB driver package). In any case, just for the record, Bret Johnson explicitly allows the redistribution of slowdown, as I quote below, in his own words: -

Here's another interesting program: Bad Block Copy for Windows. While I still didn't test it, I'm quite familiar with the quality of Alter's other products (UniATA and patched flpydisk.sys for Win XP), so I'm sure it's worth having a copy of it. -
One bumps a topic when one posts a message without any real content (usually just the word "BUMP!" or "Anybody?"), just to have the topic resurface and become the top one on the list. Usually this is done to draw attention to that topic, or to try to elicit a response to an unanswered question. This should be done sparingly, and with due care. Avoid doing it as much as posssible. And welcome to MSFN!

The backup would be useful for you only if created before installing the uSP. It'd, of course, return the machine to the state it was before installing the uSP. But you cannot do it a posteriori. Sorry. If, however, you don't want to remove the uSP, then you'll have to put up with it in "Spanglish". Sorry, again! Obs.: One should not post in these forums in any language except English, unless accompanied by the post's translation, and even that should be avoided, unless inevitable. [/spanish]

How to archive old floppies for access under Win98
dencorso replied to Multibooter's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Slowdown is also freeware, but not easy to found. I've attached below a .7z archive containing both v. 1.01 and 3.10 (the last). Cleaner worked fine in a Win98 DOS window. It seems this also lies in the YMMV land, then. Well, that's why I don't trust formulated cleaning fluids. Ans since you had a bad experience with ethanol (I doubt it was the responsible for your old FDD's failure, though... It may just have reached its end-of-life) I'd reccomend pure isopropanol (a.k.a. isopropyl alcohol) as the cleaning fluid of choice. It's fast to dry and leaves no residue nor moisture (which was probably the reason your FDD took so ling to get back to working condition). Anyway, YMMV here also.@jaclaz: cleaning floppies are extremely rare and expensive, by now, at least in Brazil. And the 5.25" ones seem not findable anywhere, although I did stumble on one 8" cleaning floppy (!) during my searches (sorry, I didn't save the link to it). Nowadays I have just one 3.5" and one 5.25" cleaning floppies, and I remain on the lookout for more, locally, because usually you cannot buy just the floppy, and the cleaning liquid would entail lots of problems with the customs in case I tried to buy them abroad. For sure! It cannot cost that much even if handcrafted from solid gold! Of course, your 1st link on FDDs has the right price. Here I can find them for R$14.99, which is about US$7.00! Including P&H, that would rise to about US$14.00. See here. slowdown.7z -

@lightning slinger: That's not troubleshooting... it's witchcraft!!! Congratulations for the great catch! @trevor89: Congrats to you, too, for your persistence and successful system recovery. Now, do start creating full back-up images of your boot partition, to never find yourself again in such a situation. I do favor Ghost. But it's not for free, although you can get an original Norton Ghost 2003 package quite cheap on e-Bay and like places. But there are many other options and IcemanND spelled them all out for everybody in the thread Disk Imaging Software. Loose no time, take your pick, and start imaging. -
How to archive old floppies for access under Win98
dencorso replied to Multibooter's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Oh! Right! I think, then, that it was I that misread you. Well, you see, here we are deep into the YMMV land!!! I sometimes wonder what wonderful drive and controller Gilles Vollant must have for all the options in WinImage to work right in his machine, even under Win XP! Why, under XP, the most I can do with WinImage is work with already created images, besides collecting 1.44 MB and 1.2 MB images from the 3.5" and 5.25" drives, respectively. From 3.5" floppies, 1.68 MB (DMF or with 224 dir entries) also work, provided I don't try to format. And that's all. Another very useful tool (which is now quite difficult to find) is Cleaner, which can wipe the driver's heads in a much more thorough way than simply issuing a "DIR" command (and telling DOS to retry 3 or 4 times), when used together with a conventional head cleaner diskette (alas! those are also difficult to find today) wet with isopropanol or ethanol (I consider ethanol much better as cleaning liquid than isopropanol, and have been using it for cleaning the heads of diskette drives and tape decks since before the 4004 hit the market, and it never caused any damage to my hardware, despite the legends against it). Cleaner *only* works when run in *true* DOS. When trying to recover data from old floppies, I always clean the heads after I'm done (and often even during the process). Old floppies can soil the heads quite badly (some say it's mold, I don't really know) and prevent them from reading right. CLEANER.ZIP has fcab9d6c3d7a5e96b0ef819fe64e30fd as MD5 hash and f30530c6e8ef2b81f4fe8bfb3df3f6357d95e349 as SHA1 hash and is 29,168 bytes long, just for the record. And, of course, for calculating both MD5 and SHA1 hashes there is microsoft's own excellent FCIV. -

dencorso replied to cannie's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
You're most welcome, cannie! BTW, perhaps you might add a note in post #1 regarding the fact that XXCOPY FREEWARE v.2.96.5 is the very last version of XXCOPY that works OK with Win 9x/ME (I originally posted this info here). -
No. The uSP is English-Only, as are most of the things here, unless where support for some other language is explicitly stated. Of course, you can always deploy the back-up image you've made just before installing the uSP, and you'll be back to full Spanish Win in 30 min. or less... That's just one of the many reasons for backing-up.
