Hi, Dave! Since Multibooter was too modest to point it to you, let me do it: do read his own very interesting thread on SDHC & micro-SDHC card readers for Windows 98! Moreover, it's worth mentioning that NUSB 3.3 is actually heavily based on Win ME's USB stack, so anything that runs on ME should run on 98Se + NUSB 3.3... And in case you opt for troubleshooting your system till it works, of course I'm willing to help you with it, and I'm certain so is Multibooter. But I agree 100% with him that it'd be highly advisable to restore your system to a point immediately before you started fiddling around with the card reader and nusb, if possible, and then proceed from there. Then I'd disable the INFs for any other USB related drivers you may have and install NUSB 3.3. It ought to recognize the Card Reader then, with no need of any manufacturer's drivers. This is just my 2¢, of course.

Thanks dencorso. You solved the puzzle of the different files. When I extracted 6 of the different .CA_, .IN_, .SY and .TX_ files on 2 CDs, the resulting extracted files were identical. While I'm really glad to have been able to help you, Multibooter, I fully agree with your words in the first quotation: I know for a fact that non-lossy file compressors often create different files from the same input, which, when expanded, yield correctly the original input. I had observed this before both with cabarc and with pkzip, and your case is yet one more example of it. What I don't know is why. I guess random number generation may be involved in the earlier steps of LZW (and related algorithms) compression. But I never found the time to study them close enough to find out. So, for now at least, I remain baffled by it, although I'm sure there must be a simple enough explanation for it.

The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
dencorso replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Thanks dencorso. That is it. Windows detect HDD perfectly and work fine, although DriveDetect.exe (from Seagate) over windows cant rescue serial number or revision, and show this info: My MainBoard is an ASUS Maximus Formula II with BIOS up to date. Is it about my mainboard?Sorry for the delay in replying to you, luisserrano.net! And even more sorry for disapponting you: I have no solution for it yet. But the fact is I saw that before. More than one year ago, I've added a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 to a client's machine. It never failed and is still working as of today. I cannot give more details about it because I have no easy access to it now, although next time I service that particular machine I'll be sure to get all info about it that I can gather. But the fact is that it's invisible to BIOS, although Windows detects it perfectly and works OK with it. That computer is a HP Pavilion b2030br Desktop PC (which has as motherboard the horrible MSI 0A48), and it has another SATA HDD (C:), an IDE ATAPI DVD recorder (D:) and a four-slot card-reader (E:, F:, G: and H:), all those detected by BIOS, so that Windows assigns I: to the added 500GB HDD. Yours is the first report I have of a similar issue. I was hunting for similarities, but I confess I fail to see any (except that they are both Socket LGA775 motherboards). -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs

I guess I misread you. I understood it was marked 3V instad of 5V on the PCB... You mean there is a 5V marking on the PCB and a 3V marking on the chip, actually? Well, if so, I agree with jaclaz, it's probably safe to give it 5V. -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs

Yes, you can use it, AFAIK. Power it with two common 1.5V batteries in a el cheapo battery-holder, and you're set. -
Great find, jaclaz! The fdd raid really deserves the trophy!

Which is quite understandable. In fact, the Eee PC is a strange beast because it offers 3 external USB ports, and a MMC/SD/SDHC card reader. But, internally, the card reader is connected through a dedicated USB port, which, in fact, is the "missing" fourth port, since USB ports always come in pairs. Stranger still is the fact that the internal Wi-Fi is also connected through another dedicated usb port. But the really awesome part is that there are still two more otherwise unused USB ports inside, that the more aventurous modders can recover with soldering iron, care and some good luck, as you can read here and here.

Two more questions: (i) is it partitioned or has it just one big partition? and (ii) FAT-32 or NTFS?

IN_ and DL_ files are disguised .CABs. I suggest you extract them and compare the extracted outputs. What you're seeing may be an artifact of the compressions. In any case, the IN_ files, when extracted, will yield INI files, that are ASCII text, so you should be able to find out exactly what differences they do have, if any. The DL_ files should give rise to DLLs, which are binary PEs, but Beyond Compare in hex mode with no alignment should offer good insights for them, too.

Wouldn't it be easier to just use Alt-Enter just like you can in Windows 3.1 It works all right in XP, too!

Would you please post a pic of your homemade antenna? Thanks in advance.

The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
dencorso replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
You mean the HDD is detected and works OK from within Windows, but is not seen by the BIOS, is that it? What machine do you have? Are you using the latest available BIOS version for it? And, BTW, welcome to MSFN, luisserrano.net! -
Hi, Sfor! Certainly the pen-drive with two partitions was confusing to the <Alt>-<F2> routine, because when I did it (three times already, by now) I've always used a 16 GB pen-drive, too, but having just a single partition in it, and all went well. And thanks for the heads up about SD cards, I didn't know that. BTW, was it a true SD or a SDHC card you used? Changing subjects, I've puzzled about the Dependency Walker log you've posted since the first moment I saw your post... I'm sorry to say I cannot find in any hint as to the reason why EeeCtl isn't working in your Win 98SE, because, as far as I can see it, all dependencies are satisfied and there is no relevant missing procedure. There must be some deeper problem that the Dependency Walker is failing to reveal...

Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers
dencorso replied to maximus-decim's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Acronis is fine. The important thing is to make the full backup. Then you're safe. -
It never was that simple... This quotation is from Gape's own uSP 2.1a page.

Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers

Take your pick of a Disk Imaging Software. Boot from a floppy or CD (can be from the CD that has the imaging software) and make a full system partition image. If you happen to have both system and data in the same partition, then image it all. In case anything goes wrong, redeploy the image. You have to create the image of your system before adding anything else, in order to be on the safe side. It should install OK, on your system, as it is. You don't need to. But you might want to. In any case, you can do it after installing nusb. Or you can do it before installing nusb. It's indifferent. -
You can try your luck with WDMCheck to determine whether there are missing import links and which links they are, in case they exist. And, with much luck you may be able to satisfy those missing links with WDMSTUB, which latest version you may find inside the NUSB 3.0 package. Good luck!

I stand corrected. So, I guess the idea of creating a mirror is timely. IMHO, the mirror ought to preserve the final version of those pages in their original form, no matter whatever other content may also exist on the mirror-hosting site. Don't panic, however, there are still some months to set it up properly. *And* don't forget to ask for erpdude8's permission before setting up such a mirror. I'll PM him to call his attention upon this thread right now.
