  1. ripken, there IS no classic view in vista... a big lament of mine. You can use the policy hide last username and it will sort of ish like the classic logon from XP. But that handled c-a-d in the same manner. Just use Ctrl+Shift+Esc, anyways. It's good to be able to lock the computer, etc.
  2. OK, here's my simple solution: Use firefox. Add these two addons: R-kiosk BlockSite Don't install R-Kiosk until you're all done though. If you read the addon's page, you'll see that it restricts firefox very effectively. Open the ad-ons manager, and click options for BlockSite. Choose the whitelist button. Add the two sites you wish to use. For example, if you only want to allow MSFN and microsoft.com, you'd add these to the list: Any other site will result in a warning that the sit has been blocked, a la IE Information Bar. The problem with R-Kiosk is it allows no address bar. This is good if you want to restrict it to only two sites, but bad if you want to allow it to access multiple sites. So, I've created a handy dandy html page to set as the home page if you wish that basically lets you put in the address and it will appear in an iFrame. Because of the way I wrote it, you can't go to anything on the local filesystem, i.e. file:// . This was half bug, half feature. It's not coded very well, and if anyone wants to make improvements, go ahead. The code calls for an image, but I haven't made a logo yet. Anyone interested in a donation of their photoshop skills? Anyhow, here's the next part. You use group policy to set firefox as the shell for the user, meaning they will never see windows explorer - when they log on, they'll go directly to firefox in a locked down state. I've included some reg files below to set the necessary policies, as well as with better instructions. The policies implemented will also: Disable the command prompt Disable all options in the Control-Alt-Del box other than log off, shut down, and of course, cancel. Prevent the user from using the run command Prevent access to the C:/ drive Uses the run only specified windows applications policy to restrict the user to using only firefox.exe, opera.exe (if you choose to use opera rather than firefox. It has a built-in kiosk mode, opera.exe -k. No blocksite though.) Forces Windows Classic theme Prevents access to shared documents I think that's it. See the attached zip for all the necessary files, and a detailed readme. Hope this works! kiosk_project.zip
  3. A lot of group policies (all or most administrative templates) are stored in the registry, and as such, can be applied to an individual user. There is an excel spreadsheet from microsoft somewhere that lists all the policy settings you can make through the registry, but I don't happen to have a link. You can surely find it if you google it. that's what I always do. as for ntuser.man. Find that user's folder. It's typically C:/Documents and Settings/Username. Find ntuser.dat. Make a copy of it (for backup purposes). Now rename it to ntuser.man. Tada!
  4. You really ought to give your brother a seperate user account on the computer, and password protect yours.
  5. You could also use gp to force firefox as the user's shell. Then no start menu whatsoever. Pressing ctrl+alt+del (you DO have change password, lock computer, and task manager disabled, right?) will allow you to log off. In fact, if you also want to stop them from shutting down the computer, do that, too, and disable shutdown from the logon screen. Then you can only shut it down while logged in as the admin.
  6. Pues, usa espanol entonces, o usa google translator. Los que no entienden espanol pueden usarlo tambien si quieren entender. Es mejor usar ingles, pero si no lo sepas, o no lo sepas muy bien, espanol es mejor que nada, o no poder entenderle.
  7. I've got to disagree with you on that one, Ripken. Users with large screens will have a lot of wasted space, and users with smaller screens will have overflow issues. It's much better to use CSS for layout and let the page flow and adjust according to the resolution. Anyhow, as for background, I'll cook something up this weekend when I have time.
  8. Considering that the boot screen is there to be something pretty to look at while all the drivers, etc. are being loaded I highly doubt it. why? Well, you'd need to load some drivers to show your video, flash, whatev, and that would defeat the purpose. Also, note that while the boot screen is shown, windows is running in 16-bit color mode. The generic VGA drivers haven't even been loaded yet. I think that's a solid no on that one.
  9. WTF? Can you pleeeeeeaaaaaaaaase try to make it at least a little bit more clear what the heck you're talking about?
  10. So.... how old are you turning? Happy birthday!!
  11. I voted light. I don't game very often at all, since I'm so busy with school. when I do play, I usually play what I guess could be called brain games, or thinking games, and I also like simulators. (I voted puzzle.) Google earth flightsim is awesome I agree with ripken, I'd rather spend the time learning something. I'm trying to learn ASM for TI-83/4+. Those who are bored in school (in other words, want calculator games) and have a TI-83+ or TI-84+ should check out detached solutions - they've got some awesome stuff, and of course ticalc.org. And the making money is always good, too. Or, spend time on MSFN!
  12. Also, SIW shows licenses for installed programs.
  13. Hmm. Maybe you got some virus or something from the web? Try doing a full virus scan, and see what happens. If you have some docs that are acting up that have no private info in them, you could upload some for us to poke with a very long pole. HTML is the language that web pages are written in. MS word can save things to HTML, but never EVER use it to make a real webpage. It wasn't designed to do that.
  14. I think there's some options for this using group policy. Also, to just change My Docs for example, try right-clicking the My Docs icon on the start menu and specifying the target.
  15. I don't think there is a virtual machine program that has good graphics capabilities, or anything like that. They pretty much all see a 1 core pentinum 4 processor, however much ram you give them, and a crappy grahics card, with about 8 megs of video ram. So even if you have a fancy video card, it won't do you any good in a virtual setting. There is no such thing as good graphics in a virtual machine.
  16. No offense, but if you can't be bothered to search through information that's already there, then why should we bother to go out of our ways to answer in your own little post? Someone close this topic. Please.
  17. D'oh! Well, you'll have to find them on the cd or from a friend I guess.
  18. They may be hiding. Did you do a search? Oh, and when searching, choose advanced options and check search system files. 'Cause those are "system" files. Are there ANY screensavers at all, even the standard one with the XP logo? If they're not there anywhere, that's odd, since windows file protection protects screensavers, I think. Anyhow, if you have your xp cd, you may be able to find them on the cd somewhere.
  19. Hmmm. That's funny, I could've sworn I saw a thread almost exactly like this about 3 posts down the page. Oh, but it has only 390 posts, so it must not have any useful information, huh? Honestly, this didn't even require searching, all it would take is glancing down the screen about an inch. Sheesh.
  20. Open search (Windows key + F) in the file name box, type .scr. Any screen savers should appear. If you have an i386 folder, look there. They're probably out there on the internet somewhere for download, or you can copy them from a friend's machine. ALL versions of windows xp have the same screensavers by default, though media center 2005 has a few as part of the microsoft plus pack that comes with it.
  21. Who are you talking to, IcemanND? Anyhow... Windows XP SP3 Build 3205 released [slashdot] WOOT!
  22. Well, the boxes must be running Windows XP Professional (or hacked XP MCE), or if vista, then business, enterprise or ultimate editions. So, go to System control panel (Winkey + Break) and choose the computer name tab. Click "Change". Type the domain name into the domain box and click OK. If all works well, it will say "Welcome to the My-Domain-Name domain." and then "You must restart to apply changes" or something like that. Restart and there you go. You press ctrl+alt+del, choose whether to log on locally or to the domain, and there you are.
  23. No point in closing it. Someone else may have the same question and need to ask for clarification in the future.
  24. Well, I assume you're creating a "windows" (read: Samba pretending to be windows) domain, correct? I've never made a domain using samba, but if there's any sort of policy settings or the like, you may be able to find it under there. However, note that joining a PC to the domain will by default enable the Ctrl-Alt-Del deal, and you can ONLY log in to a domain from the classic logon. The rest of the files and stuff... don't ask me, I don't know.
