  1. Actually it seems OpenDNS cannot do this. I've looked around their forum and this question's been asked at least twice. The answer is no. If they allow this ever, it'll probably be a premium feature that you pay for. Using IE's Content Advisor looks to be a reasonable alternative. Give it the most restrictive settings, including those that block all sites not rated, and you pretty much can navigate only the sites you add to the white list.
  2. Thank you! Windows SteadyState looks promising. I'm looking at the handbook right now. Do you know if it has an option to allow only certain websites to be accessed?
  3. Hello folks, I'm trying to set up a computer for my company so that only two web sites are accessible. They'd also like it so that executables can't be run, even mundane programs such as calc, notepad, etc. This also means that the system configuration would have to be locked unless you have the administrator password, so that the rules can't be changed behind our backs. Now, being a neophyte to this kind of request, I don't know where else to turn. You folks know your stuff so please share your ideas. Thanks folks! -John
  4. Hello folks, I'm trying to recover data off a SATA hard drive that's in really bad shape. I can access pretty much everything with the exception of a few corrupted files, but I cannot access Documents and Settings\Username and whatnot, since I don't have permission. I have the hard drive pulled out of its original computer and residing in my own. Is there any way to bypass this security mechanism such that I can access and retrieve those files off of the hard drive? The other possibility is that somehow the folder is corrupt and that's why I cannot access it. I doubt that possibility though, since I am able to open up every other folder on the hard drive. Please help? A realtor's practice and income depends on me getting her up and running ASAP! Thank you, -John
  5. I want to put some software on my dad's store computer to monitor where the employees are surfing during the day. In particular all we really need is URL & time of day it was visited. IE's history can be erased and the employees know about this so it's not a good idea just to mention IE's history as an option. It isn't. Please help! Something free would be nice. Thanks.
  6. Even God writes faulty programs . . . I wonder if anybody will ever hold him to account?
  7. My ISP said it's OK. If I want to take on the role of ISP to my neighbors, so be it, but they won't offer me any support. So I get to do it all myself, which is OK.
  8. I have the latest firmware already. Doesn't help. Thanks though.
  9. Hi there, I'm the not so proud owner of a Linksys BEFSR11 router. My ISP sold it to me last year for very cheap, and it works if all I do is insanely simple stuff like browsing, e-mail, etc. But open up a fark.com photoshop page with TONS of big images, or start up a bittorrent* network download, and the damned thing requires a power cycle at random intervals (meaning, I have to unplug it, replug it in because it freezes and all traffic grounds to a halt), sometimes every 30 minutes, sometimes it'll go for an hour of a bittorrent download. What's going on here? Is there a router that won't crash when connected to so many addresses at one time? Thank you for your help. *For those unfamiliar with bittorrent, it's a P2P file sharing program that connects you to dozens of other people to get a fast download speed, and in turn uploads the portion of the file you've downloaded so far, to others.
  10. Thanks for the response. Of course I will be splitting the cost of my bandwidth with them 50/50. About avoiding wireless, you're probably right. About the cat5 ethernet cable freezing, how do low temps affect cat5? I thought there was such a thing as weather-proofed cat5 that could tolerate more than normal cat5. I'm not really willing to do anything more complex than string high-quality weather-proofed cat5 between our homes, an insulated pipe & all would be more complicated than we're looking for and just possibly unnecessary. We don't get the same absolute zero temperatures here in western Washington State that they get in the Midwest. Where else might I place my original post to generate some more opinions? Are there specialized networking forums?
  11. Hello there, My plan is to share my (lightly used) bandwidth with my neighbors. I have 768/384 ADSL from Newedge Networks & our local ISP with 8 static IP addresses leased, a router, a 10/100 switch, two computers in my house, two computers in their house. I anticipate laying cat5 ethernet cable in the crawl space beneath each house, with about 40 feet of cat5 buried beneath the ground half a foot or so connecting our two homes. I will run a line from my switch to a hub or switch beneath their house, at which location separate runs will be made to each computer. About 6 months ago we tried a wireless setup but that didn't work as far out as we needed it to. Here are my questions: 1) What's your general opinion on this setup? 2) Do you know of any inexpensive wireless hardware that would reach farther than what I've tried? 3) Where do you suggest finding cat5 cable that can stand being buried beneath ground about 6" and tolerate water, freezing temps, etc. 4) At some point beneath my neighbor's house, I will have to run into a hub or switch. Will this switch have to be something special to protect it from freezing temps? I don't anticipate ANY water ever reaching it at this location. 5) Is there anything else you think I should know? I'm at a loss at this point as to how to proceed. Please tell me what to do . . . Thank you

    WinXP SP2

    Where did you find SP2?
  13. I tested my standard XP + SP1 CD. Works like a charm. That's not the problem.
  14. I wonder if UnattendSwitch="no" was the problem. Looks like I forgot to add that.
  15. Are you talking about adding/removing drivers to an attended, standard XP + SP1 disc? I wonder if this is possible. It would certainly be nice.
