  1. I found a version old enough, I don't see how I could setup rules to block the outbound ip addresses. Besides, is there maybe a free firewall less crappy and cluttered than comodo firewall?
  2. Ok, do you know which version is old enough to run smoothly on a Pentium 4 and new enough to do what it's supposed to do (block outbound Ip-ranges) and where I can download it? I tried to find version 5 but I can't find anything useful.
  3. Another question: It connects to all kinds of chinese institutions etc. (yes, I've read this thread) but I'm wondering if there is an easy way to avoid that on Windows XP. Firewalls should be able to do it but I can't find any free firewalls which block outgoing ip-addresses or even ip-ranges.
  4. I have 360Chrome (or 360Browser, whatever...), the latest version and I noticed that the history list doesn't seem to be updating itsself after a while, meaning that I only see websites that I visited yesterday, not the ones from today. However, when I click on this history icon on the toolbar, the first two entries are the last two webpages I visited, so it does keep track after all, you just can't find these entries in the complete history list. Of course I've tried to delete the whole list and see what happens and the history list does exactly what I expect it to do until there are "too many" entries, then it just won't update itsself any longer. But naturally, I don't know how many entries are too many...
  5. No, I wouldn't ask for help here if compatibility settings would fix the problem. And yes, it's quite old but I kinda like it and I hoped that maybe someone would want to give it a try to fix the problem. Just out of curiosity or whatever...
  6. Ok, the OS is Windows XP (with administrator privileges). Everything seems to be working fine, I tried to download Serpent and even though it seems to be downloading something there is nothing anywhere. The temp files are probably automatically deleted, that's normal but there are no new files copied to the hard drive. Or I just don't know where they might have ended up.
  7. Kind of pointless, since nothing is installed. It seems to download some stuff to a temp folder which is deleted after the process finishes but no installed browser anywhere.
  8. As it seems there is no media player available (Windows) which is able to play bin files (Audio CD images). Some claim to do so but only if the bin file consists of a DVD image, no Audio CD image. The only way to play bin files is to use UltraIso which is kind of not very user friendly, no volume control, no fast forward or backward etc. After all it isn't really a media player so I don't blame them. But I wonder if there is a media player which is able to play bin files. Hard to believe there isn't but so far I have found none.
  9. The application doesn't really need to be installed, so it is kind of portable. But anyway, there is no portable version.
  10. I was wondering if someone with programming skills could help me to get an application to work on Windows 7 and newer. The problem with the application is that it crashes whenever you try to open or save a file (using the open/save dialog). It's a problem that also occurs with newer versions of this application and the fix seems to be to edit a file named CommonVcPh.dll and redirect comdlg32.dll to the XP version of this file (which you then copy to the folder the application resides in). I've tried that with the older version of this application but it still crashes whenever it's supposed to open the open/save dialog. https://workupload.com/file/Zn4cMQ27R65 P.S: DEP needs to be disabled to run the application.
  11. It doesn't seem to work. Interestingly, it doesn't even work with imagecfg.exe (found in Windows NT4), e.g. I have a file called systeminformation.exe, it's part of Tune Up Utilities and it shows the OS it's running on and even if I set it to Win XP (using imagecfg.exe) it still thinks it's running on Windows 95. However, KernelEx's way of fooling the OS seems to work (only on Windows 98 of course). So they must be doing something different. I wonder how they achieved that.
  12. Is there a relatively easy way to make an application think that Windows 95 is a newer operating system (like Windows XP)?
  13. Yes, I cut the text file into two halves and now it works. But it means that I have to start the application twice, one with the first half, one with the second half of the text file. There is no way to raise the maximum number of items?
  14. Can anyone tell me why this application won't work on Windows 95? Seems like it has some memory issues but is there anything that could be done about it? http://www.webring.org/l/rd?ring=ansax;id=13;url=http%3A%2F%2Flexicon.ff.cuni.cz%2Fapp%2F (none of the versions there work)
  15. Since there are thousands of different versions out there, I don't know which is which but I found out that this one... http://o.rths.cf/basilisk/basilisk55-win32-git-20190824-978d4a7da-xpmod.7z ...works better than this one... https://o.rths.cf/basilisk/basilisk52-g4.4.win32-git-20190907-6db06749e-xpmod.7z ...even though the latter one is the newer version (or seems to be the newer version, according to the date) In the version from sept 2019 zooming in or out in google maps using the mouse wheel doesn't work (like in a much older version I found) but it does work in the version from August 2019.
  16. I certainly wouldn't install it, at least not on a real computer. Windows 95 is rather finicky when it comes to updates. Updates might render some applications or games useless or might slow down your computer significantly or just cause other seemingly inexplicable problems. Just install the updates you really need and don't go for the most recent files just because they're newer. Even if you don't run into any incompatibility problems newer system files might slow down your computer (as mentioned above). Recently I updated the Common Controls Library with an update called 50comupd.exe (it seems to be a well known update). It is needed to run some newer applications but on a 486 you just don't want to install it because it slows the explorer down like you wouldn't believe. Before the update it was snappy, after the update the explorer slows down to a crawl. Since I knew which file had been updated, I was able to replace the newer file with the older one but of course you wouldn't know that if you installed all the updates at once.
  17. I'm sorry but I really don't know an answer to that. I think a lot can be achieved (just think about KernelEx) but I know way too little about that stuff.
  18. It doesn't work. I've just tried it on Windows 95B. Throws an error about a missing function "IsDebuggerPresent" which I could "fix" but it still won't start.
  19. I've just downloaded this browser and as far as I can tell it seems to be working fine (on Windows 95B from '96). It's a nice idea to have a basic browser for Windows 95 but I think it would even make more sense to use something like KMeleon because as far as I know it uses Windows stuff as a GUI and not the XUL stuff that all these Firefox derivates come with. What this means for the end-user is that it uses less memory and launches faster and that really is quite an important thing on an older computer. Just saying...
  20. I wish I could find a link but there is someone somewhere who allegedly got (a browser based on) Firefox 53 to work on XP. It's not a normal version, it uses some linux-like stuff and you can't just install it like a normal Windows application and therefore I couldn't get it to run. But anyway, has anyone heard anything about that?
  21. I don't use Windows 98 but Windows 95. Of course, I don't use it on my main computer (even though I have a few virtual machines that run Win95), but 1 or 2 years ago, I bought an old laptop, just for fun. And then I thought, why not putting it to use as it was meant to be? So, now I really use it as a computer that I can take anywhere to work on Word document or to view PDF files. And except for the battery life I think I'm not really worse off than other people who also use Word and pdfs, so it doesn't really make that much of a difference (but I don't have to struggle with ribbons in Word, which is a good thing) From time to time a get strange looks and some people have asked me if my laptop is some kind of new retro-looking device and OS. It's not, it's as old as it looks.
