  1. That's one thing (the only thing) I don't like about NUSB either. Why is it necessary to replace explorer.exe? What I also don't understand is why the icons and the start menu bitmap were replaced by WinME/2000 icons (if it really is necessary to replace explorer.exe) If someone wants to "soup up" his Windows appearance he can go for icon packs or sth.the like but I don't think it's necessary to make this cosmetic update part of a universal driver update
  2. Sure but it's still more practical if you don't even have to open the start menu but just simply click on the program icon. Well then you just move it back to where it was before (or just don't move it at all...) and of course alphabetic auto-sorting is available No. And didn't they?We still have these "annoyances" in XP and I guess a lot of people use them
  3. I never had any serious problems with IE6 on Win98 and I don't really think that this issue you experience could be a Win98/IE6-related problem.
  4. I use Virtual PC 2007 on WinXP Home Edition (SP3) VirtualBox isn't really suitable for Win98.
  5. I just installed KernelEx0.3.4 and still have the same problem. I also can't update display drivers since it's just a virtual machine on MS Virtual PC:
  6. I tried Uberkern and what's really strange is that Firefox 3 doesn't display any letters whatsoever... Therefore it looks a little bit strange (and is useless): http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1570/unbenanntlx8.jpg
  7. I also reshacked it a little bit. The calendar looks a little bit odd, though....
  8. It seems to work, but I have a blue line on the right hand side of the side bar:
  9. Maybe you placed it in the wrong folder. For the blue luna style the path would be X:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna\Shell\NormalColor You just can't replace it while you're using it, so apply silver style first, then copy the shellstyle.dll into the right folder and then go back to the blue style. No need to replace it from the command prompt.
  10. I do own Vista (and it is installed on one of the partitions on my computer) but I don't use it very often. It works flawlessly (2GB RAM) but I prefer Windows XP. The user account control popups are really annoying but after all it can be deactivated. What I really miss is the explorer's toolbar.
  11. I wonder why you installed NUSB in the first place. Apparently you have quite an old computer that (probably) only came with a built-in USB 1.1 interface. The chipset drivers for your machine should support these USB sockets. And if you have an additional USB2 PCI card it should also come with appropriate USB2 drivers (even for Win98). There's no need to install third party drivers like NUSB. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
  12. I have Paragon NTFS for Win98 which works perfectly when it comes to reading files of an NTFS partition. And the demo version is even for free: http://www.paragon-software.com/demo.htm But don't get the full version since it has some major bugs when it comes to saving files that already exist (i.e. you modify an existing file and try to save it). The problem is that it just doesn't work (error message). I also told Paragon about it and they said that NTFS for WIn98 has been discontinued and therefore this bug won't be fixed.
  13. This was possible in Longhorn by switching to classic explorer mode using gpedit.msc but I don't think that this tweak works anymore.
  14. You're right, it really works. I wonder why they omitted this option in the first place... Well of course you don't necessarily need it to use windows, but it's just very practical. Especially when you have one or more maximized windows. You would first have to minimize every window to get to see the desktop. With the quick launch bar you just click on the icon and there you go... What's so bad about being able to move/delete/create shortcuts right where you need them? Why not?It just makes navigating easier. Personally, I don't use active desktop, the back and forward buttons, the go button and the favorites menu either but unless you have a very, very old computer (like a 486 with 32MB RAM) it's a nice and handy feature.
  15. You just won't have any desktop enhancements like webview, quick launch bar, drag and drop start menu, active desktop and all the other stuff that comes exclusively with IE4.I don't know which desktop updates you are referring to because there are none that come with IE5.5SP2 (just checked this in VMWare with a Win95 guest OS w/o IE4)
  16. IE4 could be useful though, since there are many improvements that come with it (quick launch, the possibility to move items in the start menu manually, enhanced drag and drop functionality in the start menu etc.) I also heard (I don't know for sure, though) that installing the latest version of IE (iE5.5 SP2) in Windows 95 is a good thing to do since it makes Win95 more secure (some security issues are allegedly fixed) even if you don't use IE anyway.
  17. Well, you can see the installed updates in Control Panel/Add/Remove Software. But personally, I wouldn't install this pack (since one doesn't know what's really in it). I would just install Win95 and then go to the MS update site and download all the updates that seem appropriate (security updates and updates that enhance functionality). Afterwards you can seletively search for further updates if something doesn't work the way it should be. But actually I think that most of these updates are security updates and since Win95 and all the updates are outdated anyway it's six of one and half a dozen of another. Why?
  18. Create a Reg_SZ Entry called "Startup" (without the quotation marks) here HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders The value should be the path to your newly created autostart folder.
  19. The correct way is to just install it from CD and then get the official updates that Microsoft provides on their update page. There normally is no need to install any unofficial packs or other unofficial stuff unless you really need it (or want it desperately), e.g. if you have an USB device that doesn't seem to work with its original drivers (or there aren't any) you could try the Maxim USB drivers but apart from that the best way to go is to just install the official updates and leave it at that.
  20. Won't be possible though because it's just a 16bit program, i.e. it's not even possible to apply the winxp skins (apart from the fact that it doesn't run at all).
  21. Well, it's a part of Chicago, won't be easy to find. But I uploaded it: http://members.kabsi.at/LIGHTYEAR/Winpad.Zip Not bad, but I think Winpad is a little bit more than that.
  22. I know this is not the beta forum but since there seem to be some people here who get things to work that normally don't I posted this here. Chicago's (Win95 Beta) Winpad was an Organizer tool (calendar, scheduler etc.) that came with the Chicago Betas but was omitted in the final release. It looked like that: I wanted to get it to work at least on Win95 but it doesn't seem to work. In WinXP I only get an error message saying that it can't run on Windows NT. Does anyone thinks that it might be possible to get it to work?
  23. Still makes no sense, no matter where Chewbacca currently resides.
  24. Fortunately this stupid mutt can be kicked out.
