Wait until some years pass, and people will remember how great Windows 11 was in comparison to what will be current then. Look how people say Vista, Millennium or Metro weren't that bad. You have no choice but to be assimilated. The "fluent" Web UI of normal applications is a resource hog and definitely creates obsolescence. You also have to have a big screen to see enough content. It also makes the computer look like an "app" to which I am a guest. More of your snobbery, which is off-topic. Windows WDM uses cubic resampling, which is fast and good enough. The artifacts of full band resampling sound nothing like mp3. Where you would notice a difference is in old games that used low sampling rates and would appear muffled and brickwalled with the better resampling algorithms. A common rate is needed to mix the output of multiple applications. Video content comes in 48 kHz, and multichannel downmixing to stereo in XP only works when the system's rate matches. Simple non-professional sound cards internally run at 48 kHz. You can always pick a professional sound card like an E-MU model with excellent support under XP (sans PAE) and use the ASIO interface, which bypasses Windows. Windows NT 6 introduced the audiodg process and WASAPI that caused crackling on some systems. They have a special priority allocation to make it work smoothly. XP's sound is in kernel drivers and is uninterruptible. There was actually a KB2653312 patch to make the now legacy Wave API in Windows Seven use a better resampling rather than whatever poor choice was the default.2 points

BTW, Amazon, eBay and Paypal have become really bad. These sites are much more sluggish in New Monn 28 than months ago.2 points

Yes, but I don't notice any real world difference on either of my 8TB drives with Vista. It's fast regardless of the setting.2 points

DISCLAIMER: It has nothing to do with "racism", I'm just not comfortable sharing any of my personal information with a foreign national, who may or may not be compromised, that's my own choice of course. In the meantime, I'm fine sharing that very limited amount of my personal information they ask (only email!), with the German Mastodon Social Network! Keep your info in safe hands!2 points

It might be long gone now or blocked, they demand a "special checking procedure"! It includes more if your personal data to be collected, and another check for your phone/location, also a payment and a "verification", so I refused.2 points

Hello everyone, VT Hash Check is a software that I have been using for years and which allows you to use the VirusTotal online service in a very practical way. At the time of the scarcity of XP compatible anti-virus solutions, its usefulness is strengthened. For a more complete description of the software as well as its use, here is the link on Github: https://github.com/charonn0/vt-hash The 1.60 version released in 2017 is the last compatible with XP (and not completely). The developer uses a little known programming language, Xojo. This programming language is not very effective in compiling applications for Windows. The VT Hash Check installation folder occupies around 40 Mb of disk space, which is a lot with regard to the functionality of the software. The installation files are big because Xojo is a cross-platform App Development tool. It's like that. I have no knowledge in Xojo programming language. It was with rigor and a lot of logic that I managed to restore XP compatibility. To compile VT Hash Check, I used Xojo IDE 2015R2 which is the latest version to allow compiling projects compatible with XP. For the installer, I used Inno Setup 5.6.1. The compilation took place on a computer running under Windows 10 (Xojo IDE 2015R2 requires at least Windows 7 to be installed). Minimum configuration required: A PC Windows XP Internet connection The processor does not need to support the SSE2 instructions set, It is even possible that the SSE instructions set is not necessary also but I have no computer old enough to check it. By Restoring compatibility with XP, I probably also restored compatibility with Vista. If you use a firewall, please update the rules to allow VT Hash Check to access Internet. Finally, the software to operate needs an API key that can be obtained for free from the VirusTotal online service: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload With a free API Key, you can submit 4 requests per minute and 500 requests by day. The limit size of a file is 650 Mb. Tricks: In the 'Resources' subfolder of the installation folder, there is a list of trusted CA, DEFAULT_CA_INFO_PEM which can be updated manually. This file is the same as that used by ProxHTTPSProxyMII.. Just rename cacert.pem in DEFAULT_CA_INFO_PEM (without any extension). The method for using a proxy describe on the github page of the project doesn't works with version 1.67. With 3proxy, you must set a proxy in the settings and copy the content of the file 3proxy.pem into the file DEFAULT_CA_INFO_PEM. With ProxHTTPSProxyMII, you must set a proxy in the settings and copy a part of the content (the private key is not necessary) of the file CA.crt into the file DEFAULT_CA_INFO_PEM. Don't forget that all these files are in Linux format. Important: I do not provide any support for this software. This one is provided as it is. If you notice a bug, first check that this bug is also present with the official version of the software. If this is the case do not hesitate to contact the developer on GitHub so that he corrects the problem. If the bug is specific to my unofficial release, you can still report it in this discussion thread. But I don't promise anything! Here, and now the most important, the download links: https://files.catbox.moe/e4o1ch.zip https://anon.services/folder/fa495338-98fa-4c03-aaa3-a770f77ffb95 md5: 40f917daebe836cdd10b5702dc4ed080 sha1: 9b3ee563ca77974a54e0b91cf5c1a8d1b0f51917 sha256: 65a21aeddb36866a8a432705e7a455f4243d5b11cce2d2f501b3ac989b838857 sha512: e5cb0d88f6b76e98f90ce0942f7d7f5e6c78e71c1fe4de36c5081b1b764ea6bbb8ec2bd1cacae92872f4a43ec1b739b260709c318e16b006a10db8954aefb136 Update: Download links for the new release with the fix for the window of the settings: https://files.catbox.moe/m0auv1.zip https://anon.services/folder/c3c77749-d696-4445-9a48-f6fc2eb6dc30 md5: d11533523c21c67875a1b9d0cfc7f8fb sha1: ce1e1e85b5373a35a9592799cdb52fa503bf5f1d sha256: 3d5bd233b0e32edc8cc01104af5f3bae84e69f09fce00923cf7228533ff2397f sha512: 25408cd22a63f0c329aec7629eaa6ae6d048f50abbdfa88d3c7839f1d5139a829648852c5e0e0c60227b11c0110d82de067a372e56bac970462a9074b4a6bf5b Sincerely1 point

This man compiles almost pure Chromium. He only adds basic codecs and ffmpeg. You can always compile yourself, but as you can see, despite the seemingly trivial instructions, it's not so easy.1 point

The issue of preserving the original folder dates seems to be an issue of NTFS partitions, not of FAT32 partitions, For example, when copying FTP sites to an NTFS partition, the folder dates of the folders copied to an NTFS target partition get set to the current date. With Beyond Compare you can "Touch" the folder dates on the target NTFS partition in a 2nd step. But when you add a comment file etc later on, the folder date gets changed to the current date and the original folder date is lost. The original folder date provides sometimes important information, e.g. when software was available. The file and folder dates at FTP sites I have named in my notes as the "FTP upload date". I always try to copy FTP sites to a target FAT32 partition, except if there are files >4GB at the FTP site; in that case I copy the file >4GB separately to an NTFS partition.. As a workaround for maintaining the original folder dates I have tried to stick to FAT32 partitions as much as possible. This has limited me in my archive mainly to 1TB and 2TB HDDs, on which I have always created 4 large logical FAT32 partitions and the remaining space as 1 logical NTFS partition, 4+1 has worked fine for me over time. Having more than 4 FAT32 partitions on GPT HDDs >2TB would eventually result in a drive letter overflow, when also connecting a similarly partitioned backup HDD for copying data from one drive to the other. I also try to maintain some backward compatibility to Win98 for my archive. Win98 has a partition size limit for FAT32 partitions, cannot access NTFS without additional tools and cannot use stuff archived stuff on GPT HDDs >2TB. I therefore consider HDDs >2TB, with huge NTFS partition(s), as useful mainly for movies, music, bittorrent downloads, .isos, stuff from archive.org, .gho and .tbi partition backups, not-yet-processed eMule downloads, infected stuff downloaded, stuff never accessed under Win98, stuff accessed only under Win10, etc, i.e. where the creation date of the holding folder is of secondary importance. All other stuff I prefer to archive on FAT32 partitions, where the folder dates do not get modified when adding stuff into folders. Under FAT32 I do not need to ask myself "is this the original folder date?", especially because I use Beyond Compare for file handling.1 point

1) OpenVPN v2.5.4 (schtrom mod) Thanks , OpenVPN 2.5.4 (schtrom mod) is working fine under WinXP on my SSE2 desktop computer. Your link to the free VPN server at VPNBook was very helpful for learning about OpenVPN and for testing various parameters in the .ovpn OpenVPN config file. The 2 settings with which I was able to get OpenVPN v2.5.4 to work with the .ovpn config file from VPNBook were: - in Device Manager -> TAP-Windows Adapter V9 -> Advanced tab: -> set Media Status: Always connected - added the parameter "ip-win32 ipapi" to the .ovpn config file from VPNBook (or later to the .ovpn file from ExpressVPN) OpenVPN 2.5.4 (schtrom mod), however, does NOT work on my Inspiron 7500 laptop (SSE-only, 650MHz Pentium 3) under WinXP, I have tried many tricks to no avail. 2) OpenVPN v2.3.18 OpenVPN v2.3.18 (last official version for WinXP), however, DOES work OK under SSE-only. Download-link of the Installer (32-bit), Windows XP: http://swupdate.openvpn.org/community/releases/openvpn-install-2.3.18-I001-i686.exe Download links of other builds of v2.3.18 for Windows (not tested): - Installer (64-bit), Windows XP http://swupdate.openvpn.org/community/releases/openvpn-install-2.3.18-I001-x86_64.exe - Installer (32-bit), Windows Vista and later https://swupdate.openvpn.org/community/releases/openvpn-install-2.3.18-I601-i686.exe - Installer (64-bit), Windows Vista and later https://swupdate.openvpn.org/community/releases/openvpn-install-2.3.18-I601-x86_64.exe The .ovpn file from VPNBook doesNOT work with OpenVPN v2.3.18 under SSE-only. The .ovpn file from ExpressVPN, however, DOES work with SSE-only if the parameter "cipher AES-256-GCM" is changed to "cipher AES-256-CBC" in the .ovpn config file VPNBook apparently doesnot work with the parameter "cipher AES-256-CBC". ExpressVPN has a free 7-day trial. 3) Questions Question 1: schtrom indicates that v2.5.4 contains a "severe bug" "OpenVPN v2.5.4 contains a severe bug on Windows XP SP3" https://openvpn-for-windows-xp.sourceforge.io/#topic15 Does this mean that his mod v2.5.4 works OK under Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 (as shown in his screen shots), but not under Windows XP SP3? How serious is this bug? Does this bug not occur with v2.3.18 under WinXP SP2? i.e. will this bug not show up, for example, if eMule is run under VPN on a Pentium3/SSE-only computer with OpenVPN v2.3.18 under WinXP SP2? i.e. would the non-occurrence of this bug be an indication of a special use of Windows XP SP2. Is Windows XP SP2 the only version of Windows in which OpenVPN v2.3 works, without this bug, with an old Pentium3/SSE-only? Kai Schtrom indicates as a major benefit of v2.5.4: "new TAP-Driver with a network speed of 1 GBit/s instead of 10 MBit/s". 800 kilobytes/s, however, is a useful speed download limitation for eMule. Faster download speeds may reduce the uptime until eMule crashes, especially after 14+ days of continuous uptime on an old and weak computer. eMule is a constant trickle from a huge pool of old stuff (e.g. 2000+ items simultaneously on the transfer list, even on a weak computer), while bittorrent is a very fast downloader if the file is still around. So the download speed of the new TAP driver for OpenVPN is definitely relevant for bittorrent, but less so for eMule. Question 2: Any experiences with VPN providers which have servers in many countries (for working around country-specific requirements) AND where port forwarding can be set, so that eMule works OK under VPN? vypr.com? airvpn.org?1 point

jason88fr (altogether 5 posts, all at this link) at forum.kaspersky.com posted in your link https://forum.kaspersky.com/topic/prevent-blocking-of-vpn-21565/ on November 17, 2021 a screenshot of ExpressVPN being flagged by Kaspersky (no idea which version). My ancient version of Kaspersky, in contrast, did NOT flag anything when I updated Kaspersky via the same ExpressVPN. I had not selected any Protection components during the installation of my ancient version of Kaspersky and I was using OpenVPN, not the proprietary VPN software by ExpressVPN. Windows 7-10 doesn't always make that "System reserved" partition. When there is WinXP installed on E: (second partition on primary disk, secondary disk is D:) and you install Win "7" or "10" on C: or D: (partitions already existing and 4K-aligned) you'll get a normal installation without any hidden partitions created.1 point

So the last (real) kernel release was in 2022, I knew something fishy was going on, thanks for the warning!1 point

Also, shell32.dll, is not needed at all? SHGetPropertyStoreForWindow replace with SHGetStockIconInfo, should be all. I wrote about it before. Basically, all others can be replaced too, but in kernel32 you would have to re-implement the function which gets the info about your locale (or extensions won't work). I could care less because I use the one and only English GB. But other languages, including the US dialect will fail to load, and you will see empty strings.1 point

Fantastic result, I had trust in you, I wrote earlier. ntdll.dll, Why it's needed at all? NTDLL NtOpenKeyEx needs to replaced with just NtOpenKey, should be all, no?!1 point

I have just tested ebay.de with a more recent user agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:122.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/122.0. This seems to help a bit. The eBay websites run more smoothly for me with this user agent in New Moon 28.1 point

I have now tried to log into my Paypal account separately in New Moon 28. I was able to solve the captcha and was redirected correctly to my account. The two factor authentication, however, annoys me as always. Why this didn't work during my payment process, I really don't know.1 point

Unfortunately, I have to report that the payment of an eBay item with Paypal in New Moon 28 no longer works. You get stuck when logging into your Paypal account after a captcha request. Therefore, I had to make the purchase via my tablet. Can anyone confirm this issue?1 point

I don't think that's the reason. I have several, most recent browsers installed on my Android 9 tablet, some with and some without uBlock Origin. And I have the same issues with the MSFN forum editor there as I have on my Windows XP machine. The forum editor has still problems with posting special links or pasted code. And that for many months now.1 point

I don't know, either. Trial and error is the only method to gain clarity. But I assume it won't do anything in terms of hardware acceleration in Thorium when it comes to my acient NVIDIA Geforce 6200.1 point

@Milkinis @XPerceniol and those who never used OpenVPN under Windows XP! OpenVPN is one of different VPN protocols. The OpenVPN 2.5.4 executable is a VPN client programme to connect to special VPN servers. There are many VPN service providers. Only a few offer servers free of charge, most of them offer servers which have to be paid for. The user has to download special OpenVPN configuration files from these VPN service providers which have to be loaded by an OpenVPN client programme such as OpenVPN 2.5.4. These config files can additionally be edited to match the user's needs if you are familiar with the OpenVPN protocol and the used syntax which in turn depends on the installed OpenVPN version. And here is a link to many different documents about OpenVPN: https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn And (actually) just for testing purposes, here is a service called VPNBook which offers free VPN servers: https://www.vpnbook.com/freevpn In addition, here is a short guide how to setup OpenVPN to use VPNBook under Windows XP: https://www.vpnbook.com/howto/setup-openvpn-on-windowsxp Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point
