Hi, I just notice, that some hacks for the i218 exist, but no one for the Intel i218-LM v3, here with Ven_8086&Dev_15A2&Subsys_222617AA&REV_03 Tomorrow I make a try to do the hack by myself, via this idea from @Mov AX, 0xDEAD msfn.org/board/topic/184522-lets-try-to-get-the-intel-lan-i219-v-running-with-xp/#comment-1241041 Maybe, that someone has done it already Dietmar4 points

However, this tool cannot be blamed for the fact that its results are not visible when you use 16-bit programmes that cause interference.4 points

You can also do it with the UPX tool under Windows XP. The UPX tool can compress (different levels) and decompress, of course.4 points

Nvidia tells, it has driver for it, not works. May be, that it is also a very easy hack for the Device ID in nv4_mini.sys..4 points

That's strange. Default Browser 1.8 did its job fine here. A good tool in my eyes! And everything it does can also be undone. The 360Loader and now ThoriumLoader is UPX-compressed. You have to decompress it first, as the last XP-compatible version Resource Hacker 5.1.8 can't do that. And without decompressing, the replacing of the Icon Group fails. It's as simple as that. In the screenshot, you can see that the file size is almost the old one, as I have again UPX-compressed it after replacing the Icon Group.3 points

Hi, I just make an nvme boot of XP SP3 on this nice board with the N100 cpu. I use the Intel nvme driver for this on the Toshiba RD400. After install of all drivers, boottime is 10sec. Power is always about 6 Watt. Geekbench 2.4.3 shows 8033 Points. PS/2 works for the mouse together with the keyboard via y-cable. 2 Sata 600 MB/s connectors. The board has Rj45 Realtek Lan 8168, COM1 port, LPT1 port, USB2,3, PCIe connector for graphikcard, I use Geforce GT 730, Realtek sound 867, M2 for Wifi, M2 for nvme and with my mod also CSM for XP boot. You can use any 12...19 Volt DC-source. For Bios CSM mod, copy to an Fat32 USB stick all the content of my file (see downwards), select the USB stick via fs0: (for example) or fs1: and then for to flash my CSM Bios 1.06 via fpt -f bios.rom No risk in this Bios flash, because you can always flash back the original Bios 1.06 from website of Asrock. It is one of the most stable boards I have. Just now I copy about 1000 Gbyte via USB3. All drivers for XP I have for this board from summer 2023. No crash, no error, no go down to slow speed as I always notice on all the z690, z790 boards for USB3 Dietmar All for Bios CSM mod is here https://ufile.io/lka3uvrf2 points

If Thorium works properly in Safe Mode, then your issue is definitely related to a driver or a service as only absolutely necessary drivers and services are loaded in this mode. Switch off first all drivers and services one by one starting with the third-party ones, and check in each case whether the issue has been solved! At least, I would do so. TBH, the Microsoft ones only need to be checked for proper function via the Event Viewer. They are rarely responsible for problems. And I have many Microsoft services started in my Windows XP installations without any problems.2 points

POWIS Powerful Windows Setup This tool was developed to bring new user experience into Windows setup, supporting all Windows versions from Vista and newer. What features are added by POWIS? 1. Windows Recovery Environment boot menu option 2. Multi-Unattended selector 3. Dynamic drivers folder 4. DriverPacks solution using Snappy Driver Installer 5. RunOnceEx setup phase a. Certificates installing from any *.CER files b. Microsoft Office installing – 2007 or 2010 – 2016 or 2019 / 365 using YAOCTRI c. MSI Packages installing d. Products activation using Multi-OEM/Retail Project {MRP} - Mk3 or your own custom Activate.cmd e. Updates installing f. Applications installing g. Apply personal settings from any *.REG files h. DriverStore cleanup i. Scripts execution from any *.PS1 or *.BAT or *.CMD files 6. ESD support for Windows Vista and Windows 7 What is supported? 1) Any architecture, build and language ISO or extracted setup of Windows Vista SP2*, Windows 7, Windows 8.0, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Servers are untested but they should work too. This could be pointed to bootable USB too. 2) Only clean installations are supported 3) Fully Unattended *NOTE: For dynamic drivers folder and automated skipping product key in Windows Vista is needed Windows 8.0 setup engine, if you want these features enable ESDSUPPORT option in config.ini How to use POWIS? 1) Download and extract this tool, for example to C:\POWIS directory 2) Prepare plugins folder. This folder needs your attention a) driverpacks – place any compressed *.7z DriverPacks here. Snappy Driver Installer install compatible drivers before first reboot of deployed system. All available languages in SDI v1.21.2.2102 are mapped to Windows language codes. So perfect multilanguage support is available. If someone translate SDI, these new translations are needed to be hardcoded in Launch.cmd. You can find log files in %WINDIR%\Logs. Download DriverPacks here or here or here. b) drivers – if you want to apply drivers to deployed system before first boot. Place drivers in INF format into certain folders. All directory is for architecture independent drivers, x64 for 64bit drivers and x86 is for 32bit drivers c) oem – This folder is for Multi-OEM/Retail Project {MRP} - Mk3 which is compatible with POWIS solution from v137.1, Download and extract this project. Needed files are DeCompile.exe, OEM's.7z and OOBE.cmd, then rename OOBE.cmd to OEM.cmd. You can find log files in %WINDIR%\Logs. On Windows 8 and newer you can see black screen during setup for a while. Don’t worry MRP is installed on background. This is caused by Windows setup design, on Windows 7 is this process different and you can see screen with “Setup will continue after restarting your computer“ instead. d) office – All Office versions are supported. For Office 2007 place unattended setup into All subfolder. This Office version is only 32bit and it will be installed on both x86 and x64 systems. For Office 2010 – 2016 create x86 and x64 subfolders and place unattended setup into them. If you want to force 32bit Office on x64 systems place setup into All folder instead. For Office 2019 / 365 is supported YAOCTRI installation method. Just place generated setup directly into office folder. See pictures below e) setup – This folder is here for your own *.CER, *.PS1, *.BAT, *.CMD, *.REG , EXE and MSI files During setup process is setup folder dynamically scanned, so you can add / remove files perfectly on the fly directly on your USB setup media. You need to follow some rules when adding installers. If your applications have EXE installer for both architecture it must have –all in filename. If there exist standalone installers keep –x86 and –x64 in filename instead. To define silent switch create simple TXT file with same name as application installer, but without architecture identificator. So for WinRAR-x86.exe and WinRAR-x64.exe is needed WinRAR.txt with /S inside as only single line. MSI packages are installed automatically with /quiet /norestart switch. If you want to use your own switches do it in same way as you do for EXE installers. *.CER, *.PS1, *.BAT, *.CMD, *.REG are silently launched and applied. In scripts don't forget to exit them. f) unattended – place any Unattended files here, if you do it, you will be prompted for selection when setup begin g) updates – place any updates files *.MSU, *.CAB, *.MSP here and they will be silently installed. Just keep -x86 and -x64 in filename, simply follow the same logic as applications installers 3) Configure options in Config.ini 4) Launch POWIS.cmd as Administrator, then drag and drop extracted Windows setup path or ISO or already created bootable USB into console window. You can also use POWIS directly from CMD in your own scripts. See POWIS.cmd /? for more informations. When you point already created bootable USB, it must be without \ (backslash), like E: or G: not E:\ or G:\ otherwise POWIS end in fail with many errors. I tried to solve this, but on some languages is backslash different character. So this must be carefully driven by user. What is RunOnceEx? RunOnceEx is old build-in Windows feature introduced firstly in Windows 95, which processing commands one by one. In POWIS solution are these steps generated by RunOnceEx.cmd on the fly during setup process. This is also solution for some special cases. 1) Some applications needs created User account and can’t be installed through SetupComplete.cmd. RunOnceEx is processed under Administrator account so this limitation is gone. 2) SetupComplete.cmd and OOBE.cmd are ignored during setup when OEM key is used. This limitation is also gone in POWIS solution with RunOnceEx setup phase. NOTE: You can still use these files if you want, but they have their limitations explained above. To be able to run this solution was developed Watcher.cmd. Small script that runs on background when RunOnceEx is launched to watch every 1 second for explorer.exe and sysprep.exe in Task manager, as these processes needs to be killed immediately after they appears to avoid unneeded user touch and bring better and clean user experience. All steps are readed dynamically, so you can view all 10 steps or only few of them. This dialog is translatable through RunOnceEx.inf. It’s a small INF file with multilanguage strings, this is same method like drivers are localized. Currently are supported these languages. Many thanks for them to translators! English (en-US) Czech (cs-CZ) Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) Spanish (es-ES) Slovak (sk-SK) German (de-DE) Dutch (nl-NL) Norwegian Bokmål (nb-NO) Finnish (fi-FI) Bulgarian (bg-BG) Korean (ko-KR) French (fr-FR) Italian (it-IT) Portuguese (pt-PT) Russian (ru-RU) Danish (da-DK) Slovenian (sl-SI) Croatian (hr-HR) Greek (el-GR) Turkish (tr-TR) Romanian (ro-RO) Swedish (sv-SE) If you want to add your language translation, please translate these strings and submit them with language name / language code. They will be added in next release. FINTEXT = "Windows Post-Setup" CERTEXT = "Installing certificates" SCRIPTTEXT = "Executing scripts" OFFTEXT = "Installing Microsoft Office" MSITEXT = "Installing MSI packages" ACTTEXT = "Activating products" UPDTEXT = "Installing updates" SILTEXT = "Installing applications" TWKTEXT = "Applying personal settings" DRVCLNTEXT = "Removing unused drivers" RBTTEXT = "Reboot" Examples of translated RunOnceEx into Korean, Czech or Italian. This can support any language If you like old Window 95 setup style icon, disable ICONPATCH option in config.ini. I personally want new one instead. This is how original ugly old icon looks. NOTE: When you are removing components with NTLite or any other slimming down tool. Keep protected these Internet Explorer files as they are responsible for RunOnceEx - iernonce.dll + iernonce.dll.mui + IEAdvpack.dll. NOTE: If you remove them before POWIS touch keep calm, POWIS will add all needed files. Yes, it works with Server Core without problem too! What is Clean DriverStore feature? Have you integrated bunch of drivers into your image? CleanDriverStore.cmd is what every installed system with preintegrated drivers needs. All drivers that are not in use are automatically removed from DriverStore. NOTE: Keep all devices connected during setup or your integrated drivers for these devices will be removed! You can save a lot of space at installed machine. If you already updated your system drivers you can run CleanDriverStore.cmd as Administrator manually too! You can find log file in %WINDIR%\Logs. How is provided ESD support for Windows Vista and Windows 7? Yes, it’s possible to bring ESD compression into these older operating systems. This is provided by upgrading setup engine inside WinPE, this mean boot.wim is still original from Windows Vista or Windows 7. POWIS include RES patches, so setup looks same as original! To compress install.wim into install.esd you need to enable ESDSUPPORT + INSTALLRECOMPRESS options and set INSTALLFORMAT to ESD. What you need to do is simple, just provide new setup engine 1) Windows Vista require exactly Windows 8.0. For example English Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 x64 ISO have 3,7GB, compressed to ESD with WinRE option is final ISO 2,6GB a) This bring dynamic drivers folder support and automated skipping product key too b) Small glitch exist in setup after first reboot – setup activate second step „Expanding files“, but don’t worry it’s only glitch and setup is succesfully finished 2) Windows 7 require any Windows from Windows 8.0 and newer, works with Windows 10 20H2 without problem. For example English Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 ISO have 3,2GB, compressed to ESD with WinRE option is final ISO 2,4GB How looks setup with applied POWIS? Whole Windows setup process is now more script driven. Due this method we are loosing Windows Recovery Environment option in setup known as Repair PC option. But this doesn’t matter as we added new boot option to winre.wim directly from sources folder to be able to enter Windows Recovery Environment. For example, this is how is changed setup structure in Windows 10 20H2v2. New folders and files that are reposponsible for whole magic are added Screenshots are in next posts! Hello @roytam1, there was a "major development, bugfix, stability and security release" of Basilisk yesterday (see here) with a lot of changes and fixes. You are smarter than that! That list is not a list of where to witness CNAME Cloaking and you know that! Those are THIRD-PARTY CDNs, those are NOT first-party URLs! www.google.com is the first-party URL. That URL doesn't do the tracking! And you know that! It's gstatic.com and googleadservices.com and doubleclick.net and ytimg.com and googletagmanager that does the TRACKING. You are trying to MISLEAD and I'm smarter than that - as are most MSFN readers!1 point

@Dave-H When you open the original, unmodified loader in Resource Hacker 5.1.8, you will see that its content is listed in italics. This is a sign that you only have restricted access which occurrs if, for example, the file is UPX-compressed. BTW, there is a tool that can process the file immediately under Windows XP without a prior, separate decompression by the user. The tool is called Resource Tuner, but it is a commercial programme. But TBH, Resource Hacker 5.1.8 in combination with the UPX tool is totally sufficient.1 point

True. But, um, the mark of insanity is repeating the same task and expecting a different result. If a web site kicks in IE Mode, stop visiting that web site.1 point

Nope. At least none that you'd want to hear. Waka waka waka. I've only had the IE Mode kick in on one very old XP machine that I no longer have. But this is not my thread, so I have to assume it's also not one of my releases. In *MY* releases, you revert from the kicked-in IE Mode and revert to WebKit from the drop-down when you click "this" icon:1 point

I did try DefaultBrowser 1.8, I reported back here that it didn't fix the problem. I've just spent the whole afternoon trying to track this problem down by process of elimination, which was very tedious! Finally, I've determined that it's due to the ancient 16 bit 'Run' program that I use as a program launcher. I never managed to get Thorium to run from it, and now I know why! 360Chrome won't run from it directly, but it will run from it using Launcher.exe to run its shortcut, but that doesn't work with Thorium. I have two 16 bit programs running on XP, the 'Run' program launcher, and an on-screen clock. I discovered that if they weren't launched, the problem went away and links from e-mails launched fine in Thorium. Running them brought the problem back. It now appears that I can run them, but the links only work from my e-mail program if I don't run it from the launcher. Running it from the launcher, which I've been doing for years, appears OK, but links then crash Thorium. Why this is happening, I have absolutely no idea! Just as an aside, how did you change the icon in the Thorium launcher program? I've tried doing it with Resource Hacker, but it won't work. I can replace the resource, but I can't then compile it or save it, everything is greyed out. Making other changes are fine, but not changing the icon.1 point

@Dave-H For solving browser or other software problems related to drivers and/or services, you can use third-party tools. For example, the DriverView v1.51 tool from NirSoft to easily identify all third-party drivers. However, this tool can only list all drivers but doesn't let you delete or modify any of them. But you get an informative and quick overview. Contrary to it, the Service Manager 4.6 tool from foxplanet.de let you manage and delete all drivers and services. The latter is simply a great piece of software. You can list services and/or drivers in different ways to get a better overview. Try it and you will see yourself! Unfortunately, I hadn't installed it in my secondary, problematic Windows XP partition but only in my primary one. It would have been very helpful if I had consulted it regarding my Thorium issue.1 point
-
Thanks! I am glad, too. Especially after this Odyssey. In my many years of experience, anything that you have installed at any time can be uninstalled in one way or another. Antivirus or anti-malware programmes are therefore not a problem for me. I do not. Reformating and reinstalling Windows is only the very last measure for me when even my perfectly functioning imaging system can no longer help. As I have mentioned many times, both of my Windows XP partitions were created in 2004. Since then, there have been only very few cases where I have had to restore a partition image to restore Windows to an earlier point in time. Reformating and reinstalling Windows are a sign of helplessness and loss of control in my eyes. If I am the administrator of a Windows installation, then I want to have control over the system and not the other way round. Only when you identify the cause of a computer issue and solve it at its origin, you really get to know your system and are not helplessly at its mercy. And if this issue comes up again, you then definitely know what to do.1 point

Yessaaaa I succeed to start XP SP3 on this HP Omen Notebook ax009ng. The idea, to use an external XP from my Asrock z370 k6, where I install "wrong" the GTX 960M was the breaktrough. Lan so Internet, sound, USB2,3, Cam, all works. The driver for the 960M just now not started, I think because until now all is in "Standard PC", means no acpi at all. But it can also be a more serious problem. The driver for the GTX 960M (mobile) for XP SP3 from Nvidia is there, but who knows, if it works on all notebooks. Basically, they compare your fake UA with the result from the Client Hints, it doesn't match - you're busted. https://developer.chrome.com/docs/privacy-security/user-agent-client-hints Chromium 115 has ClientHints fully enabled by default!1 point

It's not only UA now, it's also Clienthints --disable-features=UserAgentClientHint - NO quotes Check the result here, under navigator.userAgentData (Client Hints) API Status ×Disabled / Not Supported (must be) https://browserleaks.com/javascript1 point

No, I meant the user agent I quoted. It makes you unique. It's bad.1 point

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you're asking specifically for the Windows XP SP3 OS and the Spotify web player on a Mozilla type browser, there exist several serious reasons this isn't possible! 1, Spotify is one of the commercial media outlets that heavily use DRM for content protection; on Firefox and its forks, content decryption is delegated to CDMs (Content-Decryption-Modules), which are closed-source modules ("blackboxed") bundled with the open-source browser, to satisfy user watching/listening needs. 2. Mozilla had first incorporated Adobe Primetime CDM for the decryption of DRM'd content (a CDM familiar to XP users, as it is currently being "exploited" to enable h264/aac decoding support in the FxESR 52.x.x browser (... and some of its forks); this is not, however, a use intended initially by the Mozilla devs ), but that CDM was abolished in Fx 53.0+ in favour of the universally accepted, Google-owned, Widevine CDM. 3. As you probably know, all Mozilla browsers come without native support for patented decoders, like h264 (for video) and aac (for audio); if Mozilla went the "Google Chrome" way and bundled these decoders with Firefox, they'd have to pay annually huge sums of money as license fees to the patent holders (namely to the MPEG-LA group); they opted for a far less costly solution, that is to rely on system decoders (the ones bundled with the actual OS). 4. Speaking of Microsoft and the Windows OS, the first iteration of Windows with native h264/aac decoders came with the launch of Windows 7 OEM, though its predecessor OS, Windows Vista, was, too, equipped with similar support (be it less refined) when "Platform Update Supplement" for Vista SP2 was released via Windows Update.... Microsoft chose not to bestow h264/aac decoding support to Windows XP which is, in a way, the deal-breaker in your query... 5. Widevine CDM inside Firefox (or one of its forks) only executes decryption of the DRM'd media streams, the decrypted stream has then to be properly decoded to video and/or audio; Widevine in Firefox has been programmed to search for decoders only in the OS level (not the browser); remember that it is (very) closed source, this assumption is the result of tests only, no actual code for Widevine is, of course, publicly released... 6. Since Windows XP lacks native system decoders (and no, installed codec-packs don't work for Widevine), the Mozilla devs have disabled Widevine on XP, and only enabled it on Vista SP2 upwards; hence, minimum system requirements for services that employ Widevine on Firefox is WinVistaSP2+; however, since Vista has been EOL'd by Microsoft, this is currently read as Win7SP1+... 7. Specifically in the case of the Moonchild Productions' Pale Moon fork, because of their opposition to the closed-source nature of CDMs, they have purposely disabled DRM (CDMs) in the browser, so it's currently impossible to use DRM'd services (e.g Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.) in that browser, regardless of OS; the same holds true for New Moon 27+28, both Pale Moon forks... 8. Certain services that rely on Widevine did implement, at least in the past, a workaround when WV was absent in the browser, and that was to use the Microsoft owned Silverlight NPAPI browser plugin for both decryption+decoding; Silverlight has been deprecated by Microsoft and NPAPI plugins (except Adobe Flash) have been deprecated by all the major browser vendors, so using Silverlight in a browser as a WV fallback is pretty much a moot point; I am not subscribed to Spotify, so I can't be 100% sure it doesn't support Silverlight in Pale Moon (ergo New Moon); this chance is very bleak, if you ask me, though... 9. Of the rest of the "roytam1" browsers, excluding KM-Goanna and FxESR 45, only Serpent 52.9.0 and Serpent 55.0.0 were compiled with Widevine support, but, as stated previously, only if you are on Windows Vista SP2 or later; on XP, WV is disabled and doesn't show up inside about:plugins... (NB: Widevine on Serpent 55.0.0 on Windows Vista was initially non-functional (worked OK in Win7+), but this was rectified in https://github.com/roytam1/basilisk55/commit/cbc95b1 ; many thanks @roytam1 ) I wrote this analysis not only as an answer to your own query, but as a point of reference for other XP users... On XP, the only remedy I possibly see is trying to work things out with the last working version (49) of Google Chrome there; GC comes with its own version of patented decoders, and, AFAIK, has Widevine v1.4.8.903 inside; perhaps install an extension to fake a recent Chrome version to Spotify and see what comes out of it... Best of luck!1 point

Please don't compare apples with oranges. FF45ESR is for SSE-only machines, providing security updates (imported from TenFourFox FPR). While Basilisk is more a like of derived work of FF52ESR (talking about BK52 here), having ESR 52 security patches, and continuing development.1 point

it just think Firefox 45 is old. and 28.0.0.1 just changed compiler option, which I didn't use the problematic switches.1 point
