  1. If only a website breaks, then it doesn't matter for me and is much better than breaking the browser GUI. I definitely need an intact download window in New Moon 28.

  2. Yep, a huge thank you indeed, but perhaps we don't have much time to "celebrate"... Speaking of Avast, they recently phased out version 11 of their antivirus, which follows the deprecation of other, older versions. They seem to be keeping the trend running of serving 9 years of support per product. The same happened to all the other products, all the way back to some of the famous ones like version 4.8 released in 2008 which was the last Win98 compatible version, which got retired in 2017, again, after 9 years. With a simple calculation and knowing that version 18 was the last XP compatible one, we can expect Windows XP support to last 'till 2027. We're currently on the second half of 2023 and on our way to 2024. This means that, unless the recent Avast merger changes something, we still have effectively 3 years and a few months to enjoy the support with the definitions update and the same is true for AVG (which is Avast with a different frontend).

  3. Agree, and it's a nice overclocker board too.

  4. 100% possible to make it work! This precise list of tested and working Win 98 boards includes that G41 chipset, like on Asus. https://msfn.org/board/topic/175820-modern-motherboards-working-with-windows-98-the-list/

  5. Yeah, this is crossing-the-streams bad. It doesn't just affect browsers, and it doesn't just affect Windows. I just updated two iOS devices, but my old Android 6.0 phone appears to be SOL. I disabled image.webp.enabled in FF on that phone. Despite recent withdrawal of support, Win 7/8/8.1 users are mostly OK. M$ Edge 109 was updated (and the update was somewhat spookily pushed to my PC); I haven't checked but I assume Chrome 109 was updated too. Mozilla published an update to FF 102 ESR. And official Pale Moon was updated. Outside the browser world it's tougher. I found no Win 7 update for GIMP, or libwebp-7.dll, the afflicted code library. Edit: IrfanView may have an updated version. I'll check it out. On XP/Vista, our FF/PM-based browsers are updated thanks to @roytam1, but Chromium users won't be so lucky. Supermium was just patched for Vista users though (version 118).

  7. This is proof they do read us! And they're simply afraid of bad PR. So, @NotHereToPlayGames, it's time to choose your punishment. You were wrong. link.

  8. Which driver do you need? If you have a dedicated GPU, it shouldn't be a problem. The main point is that board is LGA775.

  9. It's open to any older Windows 10 versions on which they ditched Chromium, as a consequence we shall see a specific version of Chromium attached to this matter. Simple.

  10. Don't think so. Simple to guess, stable release comes every month now for quite some time. 81 months left.

  11. Thanks for the hint! That makes sense to me, of course. To be honest, I hadn't thought about it at all. Except for this user style, however, I have never used any before. I will modify my script immediately as suggested when I am back at my desktop computer.

  12. FYI, the CSS userstyle https://userstyles.org/styles/180927/disable-css-animations-and-transitions-safely has unfortunately a negative impact in New Moon 28 on the download window which is not flexible anymore when this CSS style is activated. I use the extension GetEmAll!, which adds two entries to the download window, and the extension Grabit, which also adds a further entry to the download window. With the CSS style disable-css-animations-and-transitions-safely activated, the Save and Cancel buttons sometimes disappear completely or are partially cut off. The whole download window seems to be invariable in size. That's why I only use this script on demand from now on.

  13. Sorry, you're wrong, win32 was born several years after Win98. And the folks that modded Win98 could be in a very bad shape now. Not all, of course.

  14. As of now, 1607 seems to be the bare minimum. Some say 1511 can be modded. But the interest in 1511 is almost zero, since it's out of support and had no LTSB version.

  15. But you wrote you already had such kind of experience with 1607.

  16. The Chromium issue is also " Permission denied" (even when logged in with Google account) And yes, it is scary.: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/advisories/mfsa2023-40/ From: https://stackdiary.com/critical-vulnerability-in-webp-codec-cve-2023-4863/: (it was a Zero-Click, Zero-Day Exploit from the infamous NSO Group, know for the Pegasus spyware) On Wikipedia you can find a list of software that uses libwebp: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebP#Support

  18. No it isn't. More like proof that you "see what you want to see". And obviously this post is "just as" OT as yours. West Side Story. And no, it's not a "western". Good day, mate.

  19. Sure! And don't forget to switch to IDE mode, before the install.

  21. People warned you not waste time on 1511. Especially since they fixed the issue with chrome.

  24. Thanks for the hint! That makes sense to me, of course. To be honest, I hadn't thought about it at all. Except for this user style, however, I have never used any before. I will modify my script immediately as suggested when I am back at my desktop computer. I tested your modified CSS style in New Moon 28, and now, it works as it should. If only a website breaks, then it doesn't matter for me and is much better than breaking the browser GUI. I definitely need an intact download window in New Moon 28. The download window in New Moon 28 is no longer negatively affected when the CSS style disable-css-animations-and-transitions-safely is activated. So, I'll leave it activated as I did before. Thanks again!

  25. Yeah, it would have to be re-written since the directives are located in a specific external stylesheet, that script only works if the CSS code is located in the first style element in the HTML document. They'll have to add support for revert. According to the compatibility table, it was implemented in Safari first in 2016. It's indeed in that version's changelog. Maybe the rest of MSFNers will be delighted by such news. At least I find it refreshing. Mozilla only did it in 2019, followed by Google in 2020. Also means whooping 7 years passed since it was implemented in any browser first.

  26. Missed that entirely. What kind of a mess is that? Anyhow, I tested with your userscript on stackdiary.com, but it still displayed wrong here. Added the line: // @match https://stackdiary.com/* Or is there more that needs to be changed? What did work on that site: layout.css.is-where-pseudo.enabled ---> false Can Moonchild fix this?

  28. Must be one hell of coincidence to happen right in the middle of chkdsk. Yes, old cables were good, the probability they went dead is very low, I too vote for the dead HDD. As a suggestion, check your power supply, too!

  30. Basically any decent. quality 450W should be enough for something with Kabylake and a 7 years old GTX1050, because they are designed to draw much less power.

And Microsoft suggests to learn about it. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/windows-and-gpt-faq?view=windows-11
