  1. You need to use the original installer kindly provided by win32, and not a third party one, since it may or may not be infected. And you need to run the original installer by the developer win32 in admin mode!

  4. If either of those works on your Vista x64 with extended kernel, then by all means post something about it in the Vista Forum! Those poor extended kernel users still haven’t reported any antivirus that works except Kaspersky after all this time. (Or perhaps you have given up on the extended kernel, I wouldn’t know.)

  5. Well, since the other member above kindly warned us - Avast might also be compromised by foreign intelligence agencies, I shan't use it anyways! I tend to listen to what the older folks have to say.

  6. Right! Malwarebytes is compatible with many other AV programmes, but not with Avast. If you have problems, then Malwarebytes Premium's real-time protection can be disabled at any time. In this case, you probably won't observe any further incompatibilities when using both in the same system partition. In my case, I do not have both installed in the same Windows XP partition. However, I have more than one Windows XP partition managed by Boot-US. So I am able to use different antimalware programmes on my old computer.

  7. Panda Free (or not Free) and Malwarebytes Premium can both be installed, since they don't need a lot of RAM, so no problem with that.

  8. WOW! A portable AV! That's definitely something unique. The last time I used a portable AV, it was ClamWin. Panda Dome looks more and more tempting, I will probably make a small gift to my mommy and purchase her a paid version of Panda Dome for WinXP laptop!

  9. You mean Panda Free and Malwarebytes Premium are both installed? I suppose that could work with one real-time protection disabled. I once got a false positive from Panda Free while scanning with something else, but I could’ve easily forgiven that minor conflict if Panda hadn’t bricked my OS on March 11, 2015. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-31851125

  10. @Dixel Has returned to MSFN!? You just missed your friend D.Draker: He posted as recently as Saturday but appears to be taking some time off this week. I’m sure you will get along great with Cocodile (yet another Vista x64-using Kaspersky-hater who joined while you were away). I just reviewed a March 1, 2022 post of yours in which you made the very interesting statement, “look at Prague, it’s a well known KGB nest!” Of course Avast (which I used and recommended for years) is based in Prague, which is now one of the dual headquarters of Gen Digital (the other being in Tempe, Arizona, USA where the Norton division is based). I can’t help wondering if this KGB presence in Prague (perhaps known to everyone except me) is the real reason why legacy Windows users seem to be shunning Avast/AVG products these days? 🤔

  13. @Dixel! Hello and welcome to my thread! Glad to hear you like my thread! I have been using Panda Free Antivirus for several months. I am generally amazed at how little resources it uses and how it protects my Windows XP computer completely satisfactorily. I hope you will find what you are looking for here. My list of all presented security programmes in the second post of this thread is just under construction, but will be maintained by me and constantly expanded, if my real life allows it and I have not to waste my time commenting on programmes that have long since been sufficiently discussed and put ad acta. Greetings from Germany to The Netherlands, AstroSkipper

  14. It's been a long time since I've worked on these. (Wow, almost 8 years.. where does the time go?) I believe x79 was the highest chipset covered by the version of the Intel INF files I used as a base. I see some x79 references in the files, so this chipset should be covered. I never got around to working on x99 or higher. Virtually impossible to find the time for any of my projects these days.

  15. The OP is fond of expansive self-quotations that increase page count as rapidly as possible, and of course he also gains reputation with every self-quotation. 16. first off I do not click on cumbersome windows (admin fault) that take me to elsewhere so I mostly tap on real links. second, I don't care much about an overview that sings xxxxx AV praises.... last, I prefer to review the AV myself with real trojans or virus hidden inside a folder and Malwarebytes didn't do well in my case for quick random scans HitmanPro, for full and efficient scans Avast... 18. You can't compare any product experience on 64 bit Vista with XP 32 bit. It's like comparing Moon to Mars. One example would be that Vista has far more advanced firewall, and possibly can block the malicious connections made by Kaspersky. Moreover, we already read about your experience in Vista topic, where Kaspersky simply crashed with EX-kernel, I will of course not repeat it here, since, like I said, is 100% off-topic! Hence all you "discover" is asolutely not related to this topic, even @Vistapocalypse agreed he too posts off-topic.
    2 points
  19. Excuse me, why do you post about 64-bit Vista here? Any discussions about OSes, except Windows XP SP3, [which only comes in 32bit versions] are totally off-topic. I'm asking you both politely, please, stop posting off-topic! Thanks!

  23. It's the way how their kernel is written, not much you can do about it, unfortunately! I travelled through a million of light years, trying to speed it up, Xp/Vista would still be faster with HDD.

  24. AstroSkipper, greetings! It's so great to see you're still here and provide us with top-notch software only! I'm actually amazed and intrigued at the same time! They still have such a nice all-in-one security European software package for XP, and I didn't know about it! What would I do without you! I'll intsall it on my mother's laptop as soon as I visit her. The name Panda was confusing though)))) I thought it was Chinese, now I see it's European, and I'll not hesitate to use it!

  26. Malwarebytes doesn't seem to be a virus scanner and it's terribly slow in comparison to AVAST. last time I performed a full scan over XP partition it took it 6 hours to end up finding nothing

  27. Panda Dome also has a Free Edition, and it can be transformed to a portable version, which Avast and Kaspersky does not have, so no need to "debate" over anything. Here, see the fact checked article: https://cybernews.com/best-antivirus-software/panda-antivirus-review/

  29. Serpent may be a somewhat different beast. It (well, at least St 55) has a second pref, network.http.accept.image (that I guess MCP added), but I don't know what it does as compared to the pref inherited from FF. But in any case, the FF 52 experiment showed that Bing isn't smart enough not to send WebP to a browser that indicates it doesn't want WebP. Extremely bad practice, indeed. Back to JPEG XL. I tried to update Paint.net on my Win 7 system last night to a version that supports JPEG XL (which happens to be the last Paint.net version for Win 7), and discovered the author meanly removed all but the latest (Win 10+) version from his GitHub page. I tried to find the needed version, but the only installer I could find is an "online" installer and it kept getting a stupid SSL error. I don't have time for that kind of nonsense, so I just uninstalled Paint.net and switched to Gimp. Gimp isn't as user-friendly, but it still runs on Win 7 and it includes a JPEG XL plugin. I loaded in a big 3.3MB .PNG image and exported it as .JXL. The two images look identical to my (admittedly untrained) eyes, but the .JXL one was about 1/4 the size of the .PNG. Wow - no wonder folks want to switch!

  32. @winvispixp Another Vista x64 user says Kaspersky “injects malicious java code in ones browser” (see above). Have you experienced any problems worth mentioning with Kaspersky?
    1 point
  33. One thing we know about Kaspersky is that it is effective! In independent tests conducted by AV Test over the years, Kaspersky Internet Security nearly always scored a perfect 6-6-6, only rarely slipping to 5.5 in some particular category. (You will have to scroll down to late 2017/early 2018 to see results for version 18.0 specifically.) https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/manufacturer/kaspersky-lab/ A minor concern of mine was that unlike Avast, Kaspersky never submitted their free version for testing by independent labs, which is actually one reason why I never used it. However, AstroSkipper reassured me about that in his May 8 post. According to this Kaspersky support article, version 18 did not even require an SSE2-capable processor: https://support.kaspersky.com/us/common/compatibility/15479 The article implies that version 19 is also compatible with XP, however one MSFN member reported to the contrary on May 14. Edit: I still have my doubts about that report in light of this June 14, 2019 post. (KFA 19 is an option for Vista in any case.)

  34. No it is not a provocation, nor an accusation, nor anything else, I simply listed the main things forbidden by MSFN Rules, and couldn't see which one of them has even a feeble connection to the possible reason why Astroskipper changed his mind. The political/religious debate (Rule #2.b) is prohibited, but there is an exception carved out explicitly for technology topics, and a simple statement, like the one Astroskipper just posted, is anyway more than enough, there is nothing to debate about it. What perplexed me in the original announcement was the apparent non sequitur, as I read it, essentially: "The national authority of my country issued a warning in March 2022, I didn't believe it for some 15 months, today I changed my mind." So I asked if there was some relevant news that triggered this re-evaluation. jaclaz

  35. Of course! And you see I did. Don't speak for others, speak for yourself! What others are interested in or not you can't really know. Such statements are speculative and meaningless. I did not overlook the different warnings at all. I already reported the warning from BSI months ago in the old antivirus thread. As I already wrote in my previous post, a more in-depth consideration at this point cannot be carried out due to our forum rules. Maybe, you overlooked it. AstroSkipper

  37. Very funny! But all joking aside, here is the corrected version: There is no jury here. And therefore there is no verdict. You can only get information here. And since you're the only one who asked, I can only answer you first. Here is a hint once again: I used Sygate Personal Firewall under Windows ME and for a while under Windows XP. It was my favourite firewall for a long time in the old days. It is still installed in my Windows ME partition which I never deleted for historical reasons. I used the German version Sygate Personal Firewall Platinum 5.5.2307.0 from 2004. Later, I changed to the English version Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5.6.3408.0 from 2005. Due to some reasons, I stopped using it under Windows XP. Sygate Personal Firewall could not recognise certain processes that wanted to connect to the Internet via other processes, such as web filtering processes. There were no more updates, and the problems could accordingly no longer be fixed. In addition, there were no more definition updates. So I switched to more modern firewalls with a heavy heart. Presumably, due to Sygate's age, IPv6 support is also missing. In a nutshell, Sygate Personal Firewall is too old (abandoned 2005), it is therefore not on my list, and I won't write an article about it, unfortunately. It is still a good firewall for Windows ME (or Windows 98), but IMHO definitely no longer an option for Windows XP.

  38. I see, those are not the (more common) two rows Molex type connectors, they are the linear 6 pin ones that some (old) ATX power supplies had., these ones: https://allpinouts.org/pinouts/connectors/power_supply/atx-aux-power/ https://pinoutguide.com/Power/atxaux_pinout.shtml https://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=31105&seqNum=4 The colour coding of the adapter seems right, black for 0/COM, Orange for 3.3V and Red for 5V. The notch(es) on both the original and the adapter seem "wrong" compared to the reference above, but yes, they can normally be removed with a cutter. The colour coding of the (original) connector seems (even if different) coherent, black for 0/COM, Blue for 3.3V and white/blue for 5 V, but it would be nice to find a reference DELL pinout to make sure. Anyway this adapter is mapped similar to yours and it is explicitly mentioned as being compatible with Dimension 4100: https://www.atxpowersupplies.com/Dell-P10-connector-adapter.php what is "strange is that it is called "P10" whilst your original one is marked "P7" (but with DELL anything non-standard or confusing is to be considered "normal"). It is likely given the blue and white/blue cables (but remember it is a DELL) that your particular machine has an auxiliary connector which is compatible, some (earlier?) models had only 3.3V on that connector. Also I believe you need to check also the actual 20 Pin connector, some DELL's had something different in them, see: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=59959 jaclaz

  45. 1 - Any information to back this up ? 2 - This pacify tactics had failed in the past and will fail now. Who's Russia to dictate us or any other country what to do ? It needs to know it's place (gas-station-country). 3 - Scaremongering . Let's begin with removing of the US citizenship for his daughter . Just search for Lavrov's daughter and you will see Lavrov’s daughter does not even speak Russian. BTW , Lavrov is not even his real name . He chose this surname due to it's "glorious" sounding (means laurels in English) and to be closer to the russian folks in general by wearing a russian surname. His real surname was Chechen (?) or Middle-eastern, smth like that , can gurgle yourself. So this clown does not scare me and shouldn't scare you , please calm down . This "laurel guy" represents the whole country . I mean , the whole country is a total joke-fake . They are just an empty space without us . Their war tech are copies of the German WW2 ones and made from Chinese parts. Look at their oligarchs and their children . Why they don't live and study in Moscow or Ryzan ? If they "love" Russia so much , let them live there and seal the borders ! I'd vote for a requirement for every russian who wants to live in the West , every RU citizen must not love Russia to get a visa and cut all ties with it completely. Otherwise it's just an enemy among us and most propably a sleeper (or active) KGB agent . The problem is our greedy businessmen that took their money . But that is starting to change , you'll see. So please calm down , our nerve cells are priceless and be well. As for your self-made cages , just dig a deep shelter in your garden and place your items in a wooden box with several rounds of copper foil around it and ground with a piece of a big wire (1-2mm thickness) connected to a big metallic object (a piece of railway track , old metallic bath tub would do fine) which you would also have to hide under a thick layer of soil. This will prevent electrostatic discharges that came off of the blast. I see they forgot to mention it ! Your Titan (black ? Sorry , I forgot) will survive. Would be good to remove the thermal pads and the paste and store the cooler apart (!) from the main board. The main board should be wrapped in aluminum foil , but don't scratch the chip !!! Place something soft on it. Regards.

  46. The US intelligence confirms what I've been saying , a nice compliment actually , thank you , the US intelligence. "Four American officials said there’s no intelligence saying that he is mentally unstable..." Told ya. Just plain evil. "The US has solid intelligence that Putin is frustrated and expressing unusual bursts of anger..." It's anger . Anger is not "totally nuts". https://nbcnews.com/investigations/frustrated-putin-may-order-escalation-violence-ukraine-us-officials-sa-rcna18026

  47. You can enable or disable SSL/TLS ciphers according to your own security preferences. Go to about:config and filter for security.ssl3 and you'll see all available cipher suites for SSL 3.0 through TLS 1.2. Filter for security.tls13 to see the available cipher suites for TLS 1.3. Set to true to enable or false to disable. Changes are stored in your profile so they'll "stick" between browser updates; but you have to do this for every browser profile you use. A few Web sites may not yet use newer, more secure ciphers; if you visit any of those, you'll need to leave a less secure cipher enabled to access it. If you disable some ciphers, then can't connect to a site, that's probably the reason. Create a new, "clean" profile, restart the browser specifying it, and try again. If it works, check which cipher your browser uses with a particular site by clicking the padlock, then the right arrow, then "More Information." Then restart your browser with the default profile, and re-enable the cipher your browser used with that site. Your communications with that site are probably still reasonably secure, but be aware that they could eventually be decrypted by someone determined enough; perhaps even years later, and act accordingly. Ideally, you should contact the Webmaster and ask them to enable newer, more secure ciphers. (The Web site may choose to leave some older ciphers enabled as well, for compatibility with older browsers. That's fine as long as the newer ones are preferred.)

  48. You read about the palemoon on a pendrive. Very good. However, this is not a palemoon from MSFN. This is a modification from github. https://github.com/Feodor2/Mypal/releases You are downloading a palemoon mypal 28.6.0 modification. Create a new folder on the pendrive and name it as you like. Run the installer on the disk in the system. In the first installer window, select the portable version. In then select the new installation folder - created on the pendrive. Install the browser. The installer will extract the portable to the folder. Use. The browser's folder will contain profile folders - transferred from appdata and from local appdata. All settings and cache will be in the installation folder on the pendrive. Be happy.
