  1. OK, panic over! I discovered that the problem was that my HOSTS file wasn't being read properly by Windows. sky.com has to be blocked there or the messages take ages to display because it's looking for a web font which it can't access. This was the original problem several years ago in fact! According to my research, the system not reading the HOSTS file properly after it's been modified is not at all uncommon. Despite it looking like a plain text file, Windows is actually quite fussy about how it's formatted. Eventually I restored a backup, which worked! Fingers crossed that it stays fixed this time!

  2. Doing jury service at the moment, and using my mobile phone on the courtroom's wi-fi. Surprised to find I can't access MSFN. It's the only forum I use which won't work, I was just getting a "connection reset" message. Today I suddenly got the following message - http://wired.meraki.com:8090/blocked.cgi?blocked_server=151.106.17.234:80&blocked_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.msfn.org%2Fboard%2Findex.php%3Fs%3D1ad077a3ee4d29224f13fd507e43fc29%26&blocked_categories=bc_034 MSFN seems to be considered a "games" site! 😁

  3. @roytam1 : Something to keep an eye on (and probably revert/omit to maintain XP compatibility) : #1782 Remove support for obsolete system themes from Goanna Issue #1782: Remove Luna, Royale and Zune support from the platform It never ceases to amaze me though that, despite the fact official UXP has currently a plethora of open issues regarding its deficits in tackling the modern web , the dev team are obsessed with opening "new issues" targeting revengefully Windows XP... I guess destroying is much more easier than creating,,, This might have changed in some prior release, it just so happens I took notice of it in the latest one... ALL references to the native platform name, Goanna, have been replaced with Gecko, Firefox's one, in ALL three variants of the browser User Agent string: Additionally, previous about:config entries goanna.buildID & goanna.mstone (Goanna milestone) have been replaced with gecko.buildID & gecko.mstone, respectively... Was the above intentional on your part? Is New Moon 27 being "Firefox-ified" ? FTR, I use the Fx-compat setting, two "Gecko" fragments with two different values looks confusing...

  4. Dont bother! Many people got messages when they downloaded the pack, the Antivirus programs would detect it to be suspicious because a line in one of the batch files automatically restarts Windows 98SE. Thats intended since after installing all the Windows updates a restart is necessary. Sorry for answering so late!! The computer on which I had most of the Windows 98SE upg files for testing is only working sporadically since 2020. I had it over 12 years in use. I backuped all the files on a Vista notebook, maybe maybe maybe I get time to finish a newer version of Windows 98 Upgrade Pack but the problem besides offering anything knew would be that there is no webpage at the moment anymore. So the documentation of changes would have to happen on msfn.org. Maybe MDGX or someone else might offer a download link. Since all the community offers at the moment is really high standard stuff and great tools theres not so much what can be upgraded about the WUPG98 anymore. Examples: TLS 1.2: Roytams' Retrozilla fork from FF exists and thats good, since otherwise most parts of the web now would be inaccessible on 9x. The Updates : Most of them are included in 98SE SP 3.xx ExFat: No support for Windows 98 But as far as I remember read only support when using Total Commander and some plug-in USB: 2.0 is the highest see Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers Also in terms of upgrading hardware you are limited to graphics drivers that came out until 2006 or so. Pretty much of the problem that Windows 98SE is faced with today is, like also mobile operating systems e.g. Android 2.3.6 its stuck at a certain level so that drivers, hardware and network are not as good as for example how they were implented in Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 and so on. Or when speaking about Android 5.0+ (the real problem of android would be the TLS 1.2 thing if I remember correctly its not like being stuck on 480p videos was such a horror or having less and less new apps many people say having to update all the time even on iOS is getting them annoyed). So you can say with the all the changes on the web in the last years: Java usage decimated, Flash support gone, Windows 98SE ran out of luck the last years. But anyone of you still supporting WIndows 98se nowadays like RLoew who sadly past away are real geniuses!

  5. No, indeed it doesn't! I guess we'll never probably know what was happening there. Sky won't have changed anything I'm sure, so I can only assume that resetting the router and forcing a reset of the connection somehow fixed it. I just hope it doesn't happen again. 🙂

  6. Sure , that is the whole point. I had the impression that our friend Gansangriff was going to enter into a typical Chesterton's Fence fallacy: https://wiki.lesswrong.com/wiki/Chesterton's_Fence jaclaz

  8. You brought up "a couple thousand years" in your post before I did when you seem to have been offended by the word "fools" (which I also did not bring up). At any rate, "things change". I don't really see the point in debating history. But let's at least agree to learn from history instead of repeating it. And history tells me that relocating a "poverty population" from New Orleans due to Katrina to the Midwest only added to the Midwest's poverty issues. So REPEATING that and relocating "poverty population" from Chicago due to covid does not do anything POSITIVE to the poverty issues HERE that hasn't even fully recovered since the last time we tried this "experiment". "Distributing" poverty across the map is no better a "solution" than "distributing" wealth across the map, shuffling the cards in the deck doesn't change the faces on those cards.

  10. Well unfortunately it has gone partially back to as it was before. The e-mails from Sky are now taking a long time to display again. Not as bad as two minutes, it's more like 30 seconds now, but still not as it should be. IE8 can still access the http logo fine on the desktop and the netbook, which is good so it's not completely reverted to as it was. The https version still loads quickly on the desktop too, but not the netbook as it doesn't have HTTPSProxy installed of course. I guess I'll have to keep on tweaking things now to see if I can get it back again to as it was last night!
