  1. Well, the rule of the thumb is that (speaking of consumer products, not "bulk") if the manufacturer cannot afford a "proper" package for their products, then I cannot afford[1] their products, judging from the e-bay listing they had "one box fits all", that thingy, besides the current low cost on e-bay, must have been really "el cheapo"[2] even at the time. jaclaz [1] meaning that I can, obviously, but that I cannot afford the issues they will provoke. [2] which in itself may mean little, as an example I have found in my experience no real differences in the lifetime of PSU's between "good name" and "el cheapo" ones, nor the cheap ones ever caused any particular issues

  2. Well I already have ProxHTTPSProxy installed and in use on IE/Eudora, but routing the Sky sites through that doesn't seem to work, I just get the "insecure connection" page. I'm guessing this is because it's using localhost and therefore the HOSTS file? I also have a very old version (4.5 from 2003!) of Proxomitron installed, although I haven't used it for years. I'd rather not do it by having yet another program running in the background on the machine just to access a few websites which I don't visit that often anyway. A reliable online free proxy would be ideal. EDIT: I've now seen that the version of Proxomitron I've already got is the latest (and presumably last) version, over 16 years old!

  3. That's an elegant solution, @Dave-H! If FF accesses one of the three sites blocked in HOSTS, it instead goes to the proxy server you specified, which does its own DNS lookup (and presumably doesn't have those three sites blocked)! Anything else goes direct.

  4. this depends on how website's javascript is used. pm27 is fx38 based while pm28 is fx52 based.

  5. Hey, Folks! Finally got my Vista system back running again after nearly 4 months. Anyhow, just thought I'd pop by and post how updating went. May 2019 KB4474419 SHA-2 code signing support KB4499180 pcicompatforserialnumber IE-KB4498206 .NET (KB4498964) KB4495609 Jun 2019 KB4474419 SHA-2 code signing support V2 IE-KB4503259 KB4503287 Jul 2019 KB4507461 IE-KB4507434 .NET KB4506975 Aug 2019 KB4512491 IE-KB4511872 KB4517301 (fix for the VB/VBA/VBScript bugs) All installed without issue. So far, so good. P.S. Have MS stopped offering updates through Windows Update? Did a couple of checks earlier, and after about 10 secs, I get the all clear - "Windows is up to date / There are no updates available for your computer".

  7. I'm glad you're enjoying my transformation pack! I found it to be a practical solution for those that are using newer hardware incompatible with Windows Vista (such as Intel Haswell), or those that require newer software that don't work with Vista. The Windows 8.1 one isn't as accurate to the real Windows Vista due to changes in the shell/DWM compared to Windows 7 but it's still far better than anything achievable on Windows 10, where everything is such a broken mess and Microsoft insists on keeping any sort of customization impossible through forced updates that break your changes. As for me, personally though, I choose to stick with the original Windows Vista as I use Ivy Bridge hardware which works with Vista fine, and don't require anything that only runs on Windows 7 or later. I also find Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 to be faster and more stable than Windows 7 on the same hardware in most cases. Thank you for the kind words

  9. I decided to take the plunge. I tried 8K and 16K Sectors. Neither worked in XP. CHKDSK did seem to understand and repair a NTFS Partition. Formatting failed for either FAT32 or NTFS. WD Formatter could reset and reformat the Drive. Windows 2000 rebooted when I connected the Drive with 16K Sectors. Windows 8 doesn't support 16K Sectors. Windows 98SE did not support 16K Sectors even after further patching of VFAT. Raw access was available, as well as ASPI so I can set or reset the Drive as needed. My RFDISK and RFORMAT tools can handle 16K Sectors as they were designed to support up to 32K Sectors.

  10. @VistaLover I can confirm (tested myself) that both KFA 2020 (20.0.14.1085) and SAAS (Kaspersky Security Cloud - Free) don't work on Windows XP SP3 and Windows XP x64 SP2. Official system requirements is Windows 7 and later, can't test on Vista though. In any case, KFA cannot be an adequate substitute for Microsoft Security Essentials because KFA requires Internet connection for installing, activating, updating etc. And KFA is designed for home use only.

  11. ... Maybe not officially, but it has already been reported as running fine there: KFA2019 = v19.0.0.1088 As pointed out already, both KFA2018 & KFA2019 require .NET FW 4.0 on XP... FWIW, there isn't going to be a KFA2020 version, the free product has been rebranded as "Kaspersky Security Cloud - Free" recently: https://www.kaspersky.com/free-cloud-antivirus https://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/thank-you/try-free-cloud-antivirus It also doesn't support XP officially; any brave person here with a curiosity to test it on XP?
