It seems that Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows XP support has been dropped. Well, for the moment, the safest thing to do is to stick with v. 1.291.2489.0 It may be. Than again, it may not. We simply don't know yet. However, if it validates its signature files every time it uses them for a scan, then we'll be in deep waters. If, however, it validates the files only at install/update time, we've got a good chance of bypassing that.

@heinoganda's MSE Definitions Updater will download and extract the latest definitions, but they won't install. I don't know how his program works, but I suspect installation makes use of Windows Update components that try to verify the signature, and that the installation fails there.

Problem with MC is that they are quite, eh, 'lossy' technology. So if you have the feeling it's not the same as what you've heard in the past... well, you're right

For what its worth, the .exe installers function just fine on XP x64 edtion/Server 2003 http://prntscr.com/nfv7qn (note: I believe this installer screenshot is from around the 8u170-era but i can confirm that it still works.)

All of @roytam1's browsers work with the extended kernel, as do most XP-compatible software titles, and a few smaller utilities for Windows 7 and up (Throttlestop, Acrobat Reader DC off the top of my head). The universal Boingo WLAN client supports more EAP methods than the XP SP2 native client. If you don't do DX10+ gaming or need modern MTP support, Windows 2000 still goes very far.

You are right. I can confirm that something is indeed very wrong. I would actually say that this is a critical bug. I am pulling the FullPack from the download Archive for now. I will have to test whether it is another component butchering the installation, or HFSIP2000 itself. I am very sorry for the situation. I am not using Windows 2000 as my daily OS anymore, and no one had reported these problems before, so I had no clue. I will try to find a solution as soon as possible.

Today I make an update of the acpi.sys driver for Windows XP SP3 32 bit which should work on any compi. AMD, Intel, language does not matter Dietmar acpi.rar

I'm not at the same place as my 2000 installation, but yes IE 6 and DX 9 do install, but if you look at the about box of IE 6 it reports as version 5 (but with the IE6 logo), and dxdiag reports the DX version number as 7, even though DX9 files are present.
