But the file is monstrous! That's about as big as an OS ISO!

Also, if it supports Windows ME, then there's a chance of someone being able to make it work with Windows 98 SE!

I dunno if Windows ME is that much different then Windows 98 SE.

There is also a new DirectX end user redist that's only 46 MB. There are the the D3DX9 files in it that were previously available only with the SDK or some third party software. Don't know if the other files have changed compared to DirectX 9.0c as it is still called DirectX 9.0c.

That shouldn't be a problem. If it works on ME it should work on 98SE as well.

Is the redistributable the same as the one you get when you validate?

What does the validate do or leave on my computer ?

I found the 9.0c that I get from my updates is better and different than the one from the download page.

I have an installer for DirectX 9.0c... it's 33.4Mb. If it's still called 9.0c then is this the same as the one I already have?

There are some new files that get installed, D3DX9 files, as said above. The core DX runtime appears to be exactly the same as the previous release. DirectX.cab is bigger but it's just plenty of png images and maybe some other junk. It does install without probs on 98SE without tweaking anything to the installer as I have just tried in a virtual machine.

PS : Latest release of Media Player Classic comes bundled with one of those D3DX9 files I think.

DX 10.0 does not work with nor installs on any 9x based OSes, including WinME.

Please see this other post for more details:

DX SDK December 2005 edition [DX10 is part of it]:

installs only on Windows 2000, XP, 2003 + Vista.

Hope this helps.

will i actualy work on 2000 - ow my dear god - how stange, sinse mainstream support has already ended LOL -

and true it wont run on 9x windows, since it isn't an update to DX9 or older but its nearly a complete rebuilde, based on avalon subsystem, that is also why i can hardly believe that it would actualy work on 2000, since xp will have avalon(-like) suport from SP3 and up.

sorry cant find the tech artical where i wread about it right now,

Get a grib guys, you don't want DX10 on older OSs (even if you could figure out how to force it) because:

#1 you can't properly support the games that would require it anyway

#2 it's NOT faster than previous DXs.

DX10 is being created to pave the way for Vista and to add support for a totally new type of DX. One of the DX developers even said it might run DX9 (and older) games slower, but of course they're try to optimize it as much as they can.
