But, there seems to be some stuff that don't actually require Internet Explorer to run, but the installer checks for Internet Explorer and punishes you unless you're able to lie to it that Internet Explorer's installed!

Not only could you install on a different partition, but I would recommend that you do. One partition could be your gaming OS, while the other might be your work OS.
