Jeremy Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Sygate is the bestIt's the best for you. Just like p2p's and web browsers, it boils down to one's preferences. I don't have to waste HD space and memory on firewall software because I have a router. But to say something is the best without backing it up with amazing unparelleled features is very biased and not a good means of stating what is good software.
puntoMX Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 A router. Folks, this uses the least system resources Bonkerstrue, but it's the expensive option Like NORTON is cheap LOLYou need to plug in an extra 256MB hehehehehe
Zxian Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 From what I've read about the Windows Firewall... it doesn't scan outgoing packets (even the SP2 firewall). The big question becomes... what happens if you have a virus on your computer? If you have a properly configured firewall that scans both outgoing and incoming packets, viruses and worms will be slowed quite a bit (maybe not all e-mail viruses, but the ones that spread themselves through an app). With Sygate, I've got it configured such that only the programs that I know I want to connect to the internet are allowed. Any others (including svchost.exe and the ntkernel) are blocked. It's probably the most secure way that I can think of having my firewall. It's just a matter of how paranoid you are... (me = paranoid)
Vel Straty Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I've used NIS, outpost v.1, and Black ICE but Black ICE and Outpost is simply the best.
Tungsram Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 I use a router. I have Sygate installed, but I only use it if I suspect something is leaving my PC as opposed to coming into it, (eg. Adware/Spyware).
azagahl Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 Hi guys I'm using Sygate and it works well except --it crashes when I shutdown / restart my PC-often smc.exe locks up, I think this is sygate-especially when I'm not connected, it causes the system to stutter every few seconds. By stutter I mean my mouse will freeze and stop moving for an instant. Very irritating. Are there any good free alternatives?
matrix0978 Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 NortonWindows SP2 Firewall.... hehe i use thatMcAfee Firewall i also use
Marsden Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 A seperate box that can olny be configured after being disconnected from the network, otherwise it becomes a brick. If you the user can install your firewall the hacker can disable it...
azagahl Posted February 19, 2005 Posted February 19, 2005 Hey guys how can you possibly not like Outpost Firewall?I'm trying it out and so far it looks way easier to use than Sygate and less annoying problems (stuttering / crashes / nagware). Also the ad blocking rocks.
gothic Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Windows XPSP2's own firewall rocks - why bog down your system with anything alse when it exists?<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Rocks does it????Makes sure all Micro$oft stuff can phone-home though, doesn't it!!!!Sygate, simple, quick, resource minimal and very efficient.
