This script hides the tab bar including the Open a new tab button, if only one tab is open, and shows it again, if a further tab is loaded.

I can confirm this to be working. Thanks for digging it up. :thumbup

Working with version 68.14.4b for a while now, I was wondering if other people are having problems playing back Youtube videos.

I can only play YT videos fluently if I lower the quality to 240p.  Anything above that, the video will either:

1) occasionally skip ahead by a couple of seconds
2) suddenly stop buffering as if the connection got lost; the video will continue to play for a little while but then halts, showing a white spinning circle forever
3) (rarely) the picture will freeze for about 10 seconds, but the audio keeps playing; eventually, the picture will catch up again

I didn't have this problem using version 68.14.2b (not that I recall).  Could this have something to do with the removed functionality?

Serpent 52 (if it doesn't freeze up or crash visiting a Youtube video page) plays the same videos fluently at high resolutions.

Yeah, I got the same problems!!

I doubt it's relevant, but I'll post my specs just in case...

nVidia 250GTS video (drv-340.52)

WinXP Pro uSP4 + GH0st Pack, Fully updated

My computer specs are Intel Pentium Northwood 2.80 GHz CPU (single core, 32 Bit), 1.5 GB SD-RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 6200 graphic card, so much, much, much weaker than yours.  I found a solution to get back the old 2013 layout of YouTube which is very resource-saving, loads quickly and revives the old YouTube feeling. The solution is VORAPIS V3. I use the most recent development build of the extension in Mypal 68 from this link https://vorapis.pages.dev/#/home/download instead of the version from the Mozilla page https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/v3-get-old-youtube-layout/.

Now, I can finally access videos on the YouTube page in Mypal 68.14.4b again and watch them in 360p quality on my very old machine. :P This is a screenshot of the classic YouTube interface restored by VORAPIS V3 when a video is played in Mypal 68.14.4b::

In general, the quality 360p is all that is possible with my old hardware to watch videos fluently in browsers. :) The YouTube tab consumes round about 170 MB. I think that is less for the crappy YouTube. On your computers, Mypal 68.14.4b should actually play videos easily in much higher quality than 360p. :P If not, then your current configurations don't seem to be done properly.

I mentioned that client here. But it's not self-contained and runs code from the remote server, which author can replace anytime without your knowledge. Some take it as a red flag.

Thanks for the hint! The YouTube interface of VORAPIS V3 is very responsive and lightweight, though. The complete YouTube page with the demanded video, playlist and comments is loaded very fast, even on my old machine. Only some seconds. The original, non-manipulated, junk interface is almost unusable on my computer.

... For Mozilla-based browsers capable of WebExtensions (MyPal68, St52, St55), especially on old and under-resourced H/W, I always come back to:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-mobile-for-desktop/

This add-on has been mentioned before across various MSFN subforums, but personally (without a Google/YT account) I find that the "mobile YT" iteration is the one less "hungry" in my old 2008-era laptop ;) ; of course, if you insist on >=1080p resolutions, "mobile YT" is not for you  ...

OT: It's too bad :( the developer hasn't come up with something similar for Chromium-based browsers...

<OT>

That's another "feature" I use Proxomitron for, I can access a "modern" page that fetches 3rd-party content but I can redirect that 3rd-party content to a localized archive (css, js, etc).

ie, that 3rd-party can do whatever they want, they cannot change what is in my localized archive.

Um...  Because Chromium-based doesn't have the same "issues" with YouTube playback that plagues Mozilla-based on YouTube.

Which is another way of saying "supply and demand, there is no demand and therefore no supply".

Maybe, Chromium-based browsers don't have the same "issues" with YouTube playback. However, these browsers play YouTube videos much worse than the Mozilla-based ones under Windows XP on my machine. Thorium and 360Chrome are browser which play YouTube videos at worst on my old Windows XP computer.

I only tested such an extension for the UXP browsers called MTube. But I didn't like it. The extension uTube was and is much better. At the moment, I am totally fine with the VORAPIS V3 extension for Mypal 68:P

A discussion in the core mypal68 thread led me to a resurrected tabmix, probably similar to the one I'm using in serpent52 (that you can find in palemoon addons). The site https://onemen.github.io/tabmixplus-docs/other/installation/ gives a neat explanation on how to install tabmix plus, to no avail. I have followed the steps there produced, but I always get back to "addon appears corrupt" (a https://onemen.github.io/tabmixplus-docs/other/installation/#add-on-appears-corrupt). I have tried lowering the version requirement in install.rdf, to no avail. I wonder if someone has managed to install it. Thanks!

Yes, that works on Firefox. But Mypal 68 != Firefox or is some conglomeration of old Firefox versions. Maybe older scripts work, maybe not.

Personally, I would tend to agree to this: Mypal 68 ≈ Firefox (≥ 68). In many ways, Mypal 68 behaves like a normal Firefox browser, but not in all. The JavaScript engine, for example, is comparable to that of higher versions. Mypal 68 is a Quantum browser, which has made it quite difficult to enable the use of UC.JS scripts, for example. The download package MYPAL_68_CB_requirements.7z from my first post is not available anywhere. It is very specific, and stops working in Firefox 72+ due to some code changes. I put together the configuration files myself to make it really work. In higher Firefox versions, the script functionality seems to be much easier to activate. BTW, one file of my package spits out an error in the Browser Console, which I fixed in the meanwhile. :P

My current version automatically opens the about:preferences#privacy page and three seconds later the wanted dialogue in an own chrome window. This indeed works properly but actually I would like to avoid opening an about:preferences#privacy tab by doing the necessary commands internally via JavaScript.

Ok. I was able to improve a bit my custom button for calling up the "Manage Cookies and Site Data" window. Both, the about:preferences#privacy and three seconds later the desired dialogue are now loaded in the same chrome window which avoids an additional loading of a tab. Nevertheless, I hope that there is a better solution yet. :P

As custom buttons are actually the topic of this thread, I have decided to post about this stuff here again. My project of creating a custom button to directly call up the "Manage Cookies and Site Data" dialogue in Mypal 68 seems to have come to a temporary end. It works perfectly. I have solved the issues encountered in my own way and I am currently in testing mode. Here is a short preview:
