Can't you... you know... pick one system and stick to it until solved, then go to the others?!

To avoid further confusion, move all the proxies to the host and delete them from the VMs.

This way you have to modify a single config.ini

When the issue is resolved I will revisit the other topic to avoid confusion.:)

If you have another system, you can try running the proxy there.

Let's forget that for now. I'll explain again once we find the certificate error.

Both proxies base upon same source. So both have to work as they do in my system. But you said ProxHTTPSProxy would work. So use it in your host system and configure your vm to access to it only for https as @RainyShadow suggested.

I think we're all talking past each other now. I have the program from ThomasS. It runs directly in the Xp Vm.

And this is just the problem. Some of your statements are confusing. Please clarify! And I know you are running HTTPSProxy in your XP vm but that wasn't what I suggested. Please take time to read and understand what I' ve written and tried to suggest!

So, i thought i would check my current status and opened the MU site from the original link in my Start menu (it starts "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite" ).

IE8 went in a loop reloading the site and asking me to allow ActiveX and i kept clicking on "Yes". I added the domains from the last page to my config.ini, but it kept looping.

When i clicked "No", the site finally loaded and offered me to re-register the MU components. After letting it do this, it was still looping whenever i allow ActiveX.

So, the site didn't work.

I checked the Automatic updates Control Panel applet - all selections were grayed-out.

About a minute later i got a popup in the systray for available updates. Checking that, i had 137 updates, lol. Mostly POSReady, a few .NET, and a few XP updates. I picked some "Cumulative IE update..." and it installed fine, then asked me to reboot.

You need to add these three websites to Trusted Sites: http://www.update.microsoft.com https://www.update.microsoft.com and http://update.microsoft.com

And set the level to high. If it is not available, press reset first.

In my little guide I already mentioned the problem with Automatic Updates are greyed out:

The solution is to delete this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

I see you're using ProxHTTPSProxyMII too, as I was originally.
I'm now using HTTPSProxy, but the result is the same.
This seems to prove to me that it doesn't matter which of those programs you use, the error can still happen.
Assuming that all other settings and configurations are correct, I think the proxy server is very likely the cause of the certificate error, but we need to diagnose why it works for some people and not others, with apparently the same setup.
:dubbio:
For anyone who hasn't already noticed, the PM system is fixed BTW!

After some messing around, i arrived at the same point as others - "Your computer's date and time appear to be out of sync with an update certificate."

Welcome to the selected members troubleshooting error code 0x80072F8F! Which proxy do you use? If you are using ProxHTTPSProxy you have two choices of config.ini files. The one file is mine: https://www.mediafire.com/file/vr1klatuzjh6v5c/ProxHTTPSProxy_-_config.ini/file.,
the other is the config.ini of @maile3241
https://msfn.org/board/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=49135&key=c915b3197ea8b62e406422ccfec16ea4.
Each of them is working in their system but they are different. Try them and report if one of them does the trick or not!
