In my Windows 8.1 install, I have a program that seems to be running improperly off of a file association.  When I click on the some of the files it belongs to, I get a "File not found" error message.  Others work, so I guess the file parm needs quotes (") around it.  I tried looking in the UI and didn't find any screen to fiddle with this manually like I'm used to seeing and got the "which program to use" screen instead.  I even tried searching the registry and didn't see anything particularly odd looking.

 

Could anyone fill me in on where this stuff is stored, how to access it, and more importantly fix this problem?  Thanks.

Try: Control Panel -> Default Programs

If the program is not listed in "Set your default programs" try looking for the extension in "Associate a file type or protocall with a program"

As I stated, I used these UI options to no benefit.  The question was to fix a file association, not set one.

It would help if you were not so vague... What program exactly, what file extension?

How am I supposed to know what you meant by UI options?

You provided a response that was ultimately unhelpful because as I stated, I already tried the UI options, which were exactly what you indicated.

 

And as I originally stated, Microsoft has nerfed this section where you can not set command-line options behind programs.  You can only set programs.   This makes Control Panel - Default Programs and "associate a file type with a program" absolutely useless to me in addressing this problem (what program, what file extension really doesn't matter, it can be extension .bla and the associated program does not open this file correctly).   The older Windows OSes let you set these options in the UI.  Windows 8 evidently does not.

 

That said, I want to see the command-lines that Explorer is using behind a file association and be able to change them in order to fix this problem of the explorer file association not opening a file properly.  How do I do that?

On my Unattended Installs of 8.1 I setup some of my favorite apps ie: VLC to be my default program via the registry settings, maybe you could do something similar to override the windows apps to your own applications.

You can export/import default association using dism commands:

Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:C:\Windows\AppAssoc.xml

Besides the fact that it is unrelated to the OP question/issue , that applies to a .WIM image and not to a "running" system.

I went into the Registry to disassociate ".BIN" from VLC - two places in the "Classes" -

".bin" and "VLC.BIN" before it would "go away". The first is the Extension which points to the second one which is where the old-fashioned display (in older Windows) of "File Types" (ftype) is. The "new dummy-proof" Windows is a horror for Geeks Who Play.

Well, assoc.exe and ftype.exe are as old as NT 4.00, possibly even earlier.

There are only two things that can help you. And of course, you yourself, if you're a specialist.

All the other crap - forget it. These are the only two programs that actually work.

But if You use Windows 8.1, then is always the fastest and and surest way to refresh the Windows without affecting any file and folder. Also Your settings and registration (activation) will not be changed. Only You need to reinstall all other software and to delete Windows.old folder and its content.
