  1. Apologies, it was not my intention to stir the stinky thing. My point was solely to keep it as legal as possible, for two reasons: - not to harm the forum boards (indirectly) - to keep the project alive Remember: if we lose, it's not because they were better but because we made a mistake. So let's not make it.
  2. Took me some time to read the whole topic. Good intentions, I see... if only they wouldn't pave the road to you-know-where. Remember what happened to the AutoPatcher project - the big one, not soporific's. Reason? "it could've, it' might've..." Don't even think for a split second that they wouldn't take this project down, should they feel threatened in some way. Now as I'm tired after a blank night, there's only 3 issues to bring up before going to sleep: 1. I can't access the domain at this time; is it supposed to be available already? 2. As 7-zip compression has been mentioned, has anyone thought about adding 7-zip (LZMA, etc) support to Win9x, the way XP has zip built-in? There's a Total Commander plug-in created by Adam Strzelecky; might not be that hard to turn it into a system plug-in. 3. Primary focus should be on a heavy collection of hardware drivers. As long as 99.8% of the currently available hardware does not come with Win9x drivers anymore, there's little point in keeping the OS alive: old hardware dies and OS will die too without new HW driver support. P.S. Get Miranda IM for realtime communication. Get accounts on any IM network you can, if you don't have them already. Or just get into a Jabber chatroom. I'm mr_drugwash @ jabber.org, just added my Jabber account in Miranda. Now I'm goin' to sleep. Good luck!
  3. I'm afraid you're in the same boat as myself with the HUAWEI phone drivers (I have an earlier thread on this). The sys files in the Nokia driver package are all directly dependant on ntoskrnl.exe (and other XP-only files) and the dlls are mostly missing functions in setupapi.dll, kernel32.dll and others. I'd say they did their best to make sure Win9x is out of question.
  4. I'm experiencing quite a similar effect myself in Win98SE. However I have a Lexmark X1150, not a HP and I'm using Miranda IM with 8 simultaneous protocols (AIM included). Every time it has to play a sound for a received message, the whole system freezes for .5s to few seconds (depending on CPU/resources load) and after the sound plays (sometimes normal, sometimes choppy), everything goes back to normal. Thing is, the printer is disconnected and the drivers (or whatever they may be) are disabled from being loaded at startup (using Codestuff Starter for that). But my browser (SlimBrowser) always fires up the spooler and with it the printer drivers. However, all in all I couldn't swear it's the printer drivers causing this temporary hang effect but so far I couldn't put the finger on the issue and it's quite driving me mad. So it would be very nice if someone could offer some deeper insight on what the problem may be or at least ideas on what to try next. BTW I've changed soundcard drivers, reinstalled DirectX 9.0c, to no avail. Soundcard is XtremeSound PCI by Diamond Multimedia with drivers v5.12 by C-Media while Lexmark drivers are v8.29 (latest I could find since they stopped distributing Win9x drivers for their devices).
  5. To disable Task Scheduler, right-click its icon, choose Open, click Advanced and then click Stop using Task Scheduler. It will not bother you anymore.
  6. I just checked www.flashget.com a minute ago and it was up. My advice would be for you to try the last version yourself and compare with any older version you know. Classic 1.73 is still available for download too.
  7. 1.73 is the last in the 1.7x series and AFAIK was still available for download on their site, a month or so ago. It's strange that their site is down... However, I'm currently using the very latest available version, which is 1.9.6.1073. Apart from an issue with falling into a loop when it's set as default download manager and a downloadable link is clicked, everything else is working fine. It does use resources intensively, though. The search bar and other gimmicks can be turned off and there hasn't been any advertising in in since one of the 1.7x versions, IIRC. If the site won't come up soon, I could upload both 1.73 and 1.9.6.1073 to some temporary host if there's request.
  8. Is it any better than FlashGet that can work as BT and eD2k client too, besides being a classic HTTP/FTP download manager? I've been using FG for as long as I've known the Internet and had very little issues with it.
  9. It takes more than 10 minutes for eMule to get fully loaded with all sources and UL/DL connections. I've always used FreeRAM XP Pro memory manager on my machines (and still do, as I only have 256MB RAM currently). Never had eMule crashing for lack of RAM but also never had it running for 3 days or more in a row - system gets slown down for as much as having Windows system clock running hours late.
  10. Got the same 403 error last night checking on MDGX's page after reading a similar report on this board.
  11. 1. If you want safe internet browsing, forget XP 2. If you want true DOS - for whatever purpose - forget XP 3. If you want quick startup/shutdown, forget XP 4. If you want efficient resorces usage (RAM, HDD space - considering compulsory A/V & firewall on XP), forget XP At most, if your old HDD can take it, you may stuff a dual-boot on it, installing XP on a secondary partition, for extreme situations (no drivers for certain hardware, incorrect behavior of certain apps under 98SE, etc). Otherwise, stay with 98SE and keep the XP HDD in a safe place as the last resource. Just my ¢2.
  12. That'd be an extreme situation. Driver Cleaner Pro can take care of such uninstallations, if needed.
  13. If the call to INT16 is useless anyway, why not just jump it altogether? Use JMP <past the JNZ> instead of MOV AH, 1. Wouldn't that be feasible?
  14. Personally I've moved the HDD from one machine to another a few times with no major problems. I've had the CPU fried or gotten a new mobo, anyway... hardware issues that made me do the move. Thing is, apart from Windows requesting the drivers for the newer hardware (in case they dont' match the old one), I've had no problems with that. I'd say, if possible, backup (for safety purposes) your active drive onto DVD (Windows, Program Files, My Documents), prepare the HDD for the transition by copying the drivers for the new hardware somewhere onto the HDD (unpacked, if possible, so Windows could be pointed to the respective folders when needed) and then move the HDD to the new machine. Also keep the Win98SE CD at hand or simply copy the Win98 folder from the CD to the HDD (recommended) so in case Windows requires some files from the setup kit before the CD driver is loaded, you'd be safe by pointing it to the HDD location. The ONLY major issue would be if the HDD is larger than 137GB and there's BIOS incompatibility with 48bit LBA in any of the machines (my current situation). In that case, you may lose all data, which would be quite unpleasant, especially if you haven't backed it up previously. So please make sure both BIOSes behave identically regarding large drives (either they both support 48bit LBA, or not).
  15. To rule out hardware problems, try to boot to a live Linux CD and play with resolutions/graphical applications. If the test comes out clean, then it's purely Win98 <-> driver issue. But if you already have a dual-boot system (you mentioned it works in XP) and everything's OK in the other OS, then there's no need for a hardware check.
  16. Just tried it in Win98SE. Basically it works, sort of, but it has issues with multi-monitor environments. Windows from secondary monitor jump and stay on primary monitor when minimized to 3D. Otherwise it's a neat application. And sources appear to be available, compilable with Borland C++ Builder as mentioned on the home page. So maybe someone could play with them.
  17. If I'm not mistaken, the Regedit5 files are also in Unicode format, so they would not be recognized as valid unless first converted to ANSI format (Metapad can do that in a blink of an eye). I suppose someone could create an interface that'd first check the version, do the conversion internally when needed and then call regedit to merge the information into registry. The only issue would be to associate .reg files with that application, in case it was created as a standalone and not as an API hook.
  18. Thanks for looking into it. I'm not familiar with those terms - CDC, MSD - but bad news is indeed I needed that driver for data transfer. Although the phone is a 'cheap' one - no .MP3 .AVI .MPG support, no camera - at least it allows one to set personalized ringtones (.WAV format) and background pictures and that's precisely what I wanted to do. The application - HUAWEI PC Assistant - installed about fine here and might work if it could find the driver to connect to the phone. Maybe Th3_uN1Qu3 is right and it's not worth the bother...
  19. Great to see you back! My ASM knowledge already fell back into the well of oblivion since I got other issues to attend to. Hopefully I'll get some spare time in a week or two, to take the rust off again. Oh and while you're playing with the USB stuff, maybe you'll have a look at my Huawei phone driver issue posted somewhere around. Tihiy said it can't be done. A second opinion wouldn't hurt, so I can curse that chinese company at will on my blog, if so.
  20. Version is labeled 0.1.3 and the exe's timestamp is April 14, 2008 12:54h. Path is C:\Utils\RSidebar 0.1.3\ Folder contains: [slide] - 10.bmp - 11.bmp - 12.bmp - 13.bmp - 14.bmp - 15.bmp lclock.bmp bass.dll (alternatively I tried with newer bass.dll, bass_aac.dll and basswma.dll) RSidebar.exe lclock.ini Please read.txt
  21. I attached an archive containing a hardware and a software report. I'm not sure what screenshot you're referring to - there's absolutely nothing displayed after launching RSidebar; the mouse cursor starts stuttering and finally the whole system freezes completely. Only a hardware reset can bring it back. If there's anything else in particular that you want to know, just tell me. Reports:
  22. I put together a bundle of WLL.COM, WLLINST.COM, LogoTool.exe, LogoTool2.exe and SVGA.COM with sources included. Please read all the readme files carefully before installing/using any of the files. Also put WLLINST.COM somewhere at hand, in case computer hangs after the animated screen. If that happens, boot in DOS mode, run WLLINST and everything will go back to normal. The 7-zip archive is here.
  23. So we're back to square one. I've checked the main exe for dependencies and everything looks OK. All files from the zip are in their place... Dunno what else could be wrong. CPU type, maybe...? Or the fact that I'm running in dual-view? Anyway, I replaced the bundled bass.dll with another version I had around (still v2.3 but different filesize and creation date) and will try again after posting this. If I won't edit this post in a few minutes, consider it another failure. Anyone's suggestions are welcome.
  24. Which latest version do you need exactly: WLL, WBL, LogoTool, WLL Installer? Either way, I'll try to reupload all of them one of these days; I just need to remember which are the working ones, as I got some borked versions around that shouldn't go out in the wild. As for WBL, maybe PassingBy will reupload it or he might have some new version (wishful thinking). I haven't been able to work on WLL lately as I've been extremely busy with other things, but I do intend to return to it a.s.a.p. Stay tuned...
  25. You may be right. Can't test now as I'm way too tired, but I'll definitely keep it in mind and test a.s.a.p. I do keep Flash disabled on my system, so this may well be it. Thanks for the hint!
