  1. I believe Red Faction (at least part 1) should work. AVP (Alien vs Predator) is another one that springs to mind. There's also Turok, not sure which of the series would fit your hardware best. Can't think of others in the genre right now, I'm more of an adventure fan (Tomb Raider is my all-time faiblesse).
  2. 1. Press the Pause key while the POST message is displayed, if you wanna tinker with the monitor settings (continue boot by pressing Enter) 2. Dunno about ATI, but there's a thread about an unofficial nVidia driver v82.69 that apparently supports quite a range of nVidia video cards (up to the 7xxx series at least) 3. At least theoretically, a custom inf could be built for your new Hannag monitor. Just analyzing the other drivers (look for monitorX.inf in Windows\Inf) would offer enough hints; most important thing is to know exactly it's capabilities and limitations
  3. Does Dependency Walker find anything suspect at profiling the vlc exe?
  4. Glad to be of help. To be honest, I've read about this quirk of Regedit somewhere around these boards and have actually tested the small script above in a recent test installation of Uberskin. However, I'm used to ending all text-like files in a new line since VC6 is throwing warnings for code/header files that do not respect this rule.
  5. I'm afraid an English 9x system cannot support Unicode filenames. It may be capable of displaying Unicode characters in certain applications with dedicated support (BTW, a freeware application that allows reading/writing Japanese - Hiragana & Kanji - is JWPce), but only after adding the respective IE modules (input and display support) and the proper IME for MS (there are 2 different IMEs: one for users of OfficeXP and one for non-OfficeXP users). Also, the default Unicode font in Win98SE is MS Mincho, which apparently is incomplete, so one may want to install alternative Unicode fonts, such as Arial Unicode MS and/or others.
  6. Make sure you add a new line at the end of the script above, as Regedit won't execute the script otherwise. You don't need to log off or reboot after that, just right-click the desktop and choose Refresh.
  7. Forgive me if I'm too blunt, but XP already has its own native skinnning system, while 9x/2000 do not. Sure, there's Uberskin for 98SE and it works fantastic, but there's always place for more. If you really do care about 9x, I could perform certain tests, time allowing. At this point, any help to improve/keep alive the 9x family is more than welcome.
  8. Maybe because the new GDI Plus requires WGA...?
  9. Have a look at the version numbers of both hhctrl.ocx and itss.dll, they should be pretty close. When different or unsure, get your installation CD from the drawer and perform a search for both files, extract them from the cabinets and compare version numbers against the installed ones. On my Win98SE they are both 5.2.3644.0. If on XP (not sure about other OS versions), some manually replaced system files might get automatically overwritten by restored versions from the dllcache folder inside Windows, so you might wanna replace those first. Also, don't forget to register both of them (regsvr32 %system%\<filename.ext> ).
  10. Glad you got it working! The reg file was probably missing the trailing linefeed, since this board is automatically stripping whitespace. So after you copy/paste the text in the code box, just tap ENTER at the end of the text to add a new line; then it should work (you may wanna keep it as reference, just in case).
  11. In that case, I suppose there may be a corrupt initialization file that keeps calling upnpui.dll with bad parameters. You may try to perform a search for that exact string inside files on the whole C: drive and see who calls it.
  12. You're both welcome. I've known and used that application for a very long time, it's one of my basic tools. Thanks goes to the CodeStuff team that develops it. @ starcraftmaster: you can restore the missing file from the WinME CD. It would be a good idea to check its direct dependencies with Dependency Walker, in case there's other files missing as well.
  13. REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "ShellState"=hex:1c,00,00,00,25,0f,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,\ 01,00,00,00,0a,00,00,00 Copy/Paste the above code into a shTDview.reg file and execute it - should default all folders to sorting by Time, descending. Alternatively: 1. open Explorer 2. click the C drive in the left pane 3. click View > Details in the menu 4. click the desired column header in the right pane (make sure the sort order is ascending or descending as preferred) 5. press and hold CTRL while clicking the [x] to close the Explorer window 6. a reboot may be required I'm not sure if the reg solution is complete so you'd be better off taking the second approach to it.
  14. TZ Connection Booster and then TCP Optimizer.
  15. Maybe you removed some application that is still referred to in the registry. Install Codestuff Starter, enable any advanced/expert options and have a closer look at the startup items, but do not disable anything that might be system-related, or you'll end up with a non-bootable system. Also install some registry cleaner software and perform a clean-up.
  16. Yeah and WLL Installer does it all in one instance without one having to worry about correct patching of system files and all. And in case of WLL malfunction or whatever, simply running the installer again (in DOS mode or not) will restore the system files.
  17. Check this thread, please. If the link to the end of it is still available, you'll find an installer for WLL.COM in the package. Make sure you read the documentation carefully. You may use the original WLL.COM from RP7, if you so want, but if you plan on creating your own logo, LogoTool won't work for it.
  18. I do have a Linux partition too on my HDD, somewhere over 128GB, while the BIOS can only "see" 137GB of the whole 160GB drive. The reason why I never stumbled into this offer for formatting unknown partition is that I completely disabled the Recycle Bin function overall. I know this brings a great deal of responsability with it, but personally I think I can deal with it after all those years. As a tip, I could say I'm perfectly able to read a Linux partition from within Win98SE, by using ex2fs, a plug-in for Total Commander.
  19. WLL (any version) and WBL can be run as stand-alone without problems. However, they all need patched IO.SYS and COMMAND.COM in order to be launched. The patcher (installer, in fact) I've created for WLL, however, can't patch for WBL, although it wouldn't be hard to add (time allowing). Here's the complete WLL bundle, with the installer, LogoTool (both versions), sample logo.sys, test svgacom and a testing WLL with fading which may be unstable. Please read the documentation carefully and keep the installer at hand (in C: would be fine) in case there are problems. Please note that the LogoTool2 version in the package is a slightly older version than the one posted above, however it should work just fine. WLL bundle download
  20. Minor cosmetic changes to the readme and sources, recompiled and reuploaded here. Apologies for the inconvenience, the hosting is time-limited.
  21. Startup CPL doesn't always show all processes and services. Also, some regular system files may be hooked by malware. I'd recommend CodeStuff Starter for checking/disabling startup items and watching/killing processes. Also, Dr.Watson can provide on demand a report including all currently loaded modules. Similarly, HiJackThis (now under TrendMicro's umbrella) is able to provide a report (and clean the registry) of ActiveX controls, BrowserHelperObjects and other nasties that may plague your system. A little bit of intuition plus searching the web for suspect filenames could save the day. Of course, a nasty infection may require a reboot in DOS mode and manual deletion of infected files. Careful what you delete though, as you may render the system unusable. Always back up the allegedly infected files before deleting them, for safety.
  22. Thanks, found some interesting things there. I had already patched and repacked beta2 of VC2008 for Win9x use, last year in November but didn't mess with the msi within, which still holds a system32 folder (should be system for Win9x). Also I'm not familiar with the [blockProductCode] section in the original install.ini. I see you completely overhauled the installation process; I tried a minimal-change approach. Might give it another try when I feel like.
  23. I'm using DSClock since I also need some international timezones at hand, but also have SymmTime 2007 installed. Tried to upgrade to SymmTime 2008 but the installer returns Incompatible version of the RPC stub and installation freezes.
  24. I believe the traffic is now restricted to Russian-only domains. Could you please use a non-restrictive host, such as uploaded.to, rapidshare.com or similar?
  25. I see... Well, no promises but I'll keep that in mind. Also, thank you Tihiy for the above link, it's an interesting reading. I'll see if I can find any useful hints within the code - hopefully it won't take me 11 years (like the guy that wrote DOS-LOGO).
