Thank you, I already knew about that one. Sadly it requires a minimum videocard that I cannot find in stores anymore: nVidia 6800FX. Not even 7300FX is available around. The machine I could build for it only has a 5700FX and it threw an error related to Direct3D (under XP-SP3). I'd bet my life on neither of Legend, Anniversary and Underworld working under 9x.

WPI Classc for Legacy OS'es!
Drugwash replied to Kelsenellenelvian's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Thank you for saying it for us, jaclaz! Personally I have 2 versions of Nero that came with my DVD burners, so why should I install a second-hand dodgy application ('ve read some reviews around) instead? As for Paint.NET... I remember I once tried it and did something bad to my system - either crashes or GDI leaks, something like that. Plus being hungry for resources, I'd say that one is a no-no, unless run on a powerful system. PaintShop Pro 7 ran just fine on my old 200MHz/64MB RAM Pentium I. All in all, the applications to install can be customized at will, so let's not argue on that. What we need here is the main script running flawlessly on the target systems so please, anybody interested do post bug reports and improvement ideas. -
WPI Classc for Legacy OS'es!

Tested v1.2.1: • Buttons are fixed (could be couple pixels lower but they're not cut anymore, anyway). • Links still point to -Embedded and on clicking again the app freezes and has to be killed. • The .reg is not there anymore (probably unneeded?). • There's mention of %~dp0 and wpipath in WPI.bat without those variables being used further on. • The actual startup of WPI is calling the WPI folder whereas the Classic version comes within the WPI_Classic folder. Should this version's folder be named WPIC? • To automatically exit a batch file in Win9x, it requires a CLS command before EXIT. The end of the .bat might have to look like this: ... REM Start WPI and wait for its end start /wait %wpipath%\WPIC\WPI.hta cls exit -

Well, as far as I can see, everybody here is more or less shooting in the dark so I just set the value back to 00 00 00 FF as it was. Dunno what the connection is with the swap file, free space and all that, but I know 9x was supposed to work even with 50 MB free HDD space so now when I have over 1.5 GB and soon after it throws the "You have run out of space on drive C" message without me doing anything different than before, I know there's really something wrong. Keep on digging, maybe you find out something. Good luck! -
If your current connection is old, try running RASPPPOE.EXE from the PPPoE upgrade package again and create another connection. I've had a problem myself with Win98SE suddenly unable to connect and after wasting time with their useless support over the phone I managed to find out the issue by myself: Access Point's name had been changed. Yes, this may seem harmless and indeed XP doesn't care about it but 9x needs that name and can be seen in the Phone number field of the Dial-up connection dialog. Also make sure there are no other connections in Internet Options > Connections and that Never Dial a Connection is not enabled. TCP/IP settings should all be automatic in regard to IP and DNS. You may be better off buying yourself a router and setting it up properly.
-
I've been getting such crashes myself. The solution found was to disconnect my PPPoE connection prior to closing eMule and everything would go smooth. Before that, I used to use Sysinternals' TCPView to batch kill connections prior to closing eMule and that solution worked as well (I believe I already mentioned it around). Recently I bought myself a router and can't disable the connection anymore, but eMule's been good and didn't crash anymore - at least not on its fault. Other applications have crashed my system though and forced a reboot. I believe the crashes being related to the number of simultaneous downloads, since closing eMule while there's few or no current downloads will not result in a crash. Let's see how the upcoming version behaves, should be out any day now.

Here's what I meant in regard to those 3 buttons: Why not just increase the spacing between Begin Install and Selections, since the former is the most important of them anyway? Here's how it looks like: Doesn't seem very logical to me. Would you consider implementing a breadcrumbs system instead?Main Page > Options ( Main Page > Config ), similar to many forum boards, for example (see the top of this page). Oh and I just noticed your edit. I got IE6-SP1 and using SlimBrowser based on IE engine. It may be a problem with links in .hta files (haven't used any before). Any particular file versions you wanna know? I never kept a list of updates, always installed/uninstalled (un)official updates on a whim so there may be some incompatibility somewhere. I remember I've got same issue with -Embedded before, long time ago, but can't remember which application was it. I'll download WPI again and see if there's any change. [EDIT] Downloaded again and all files are identical. Did you change anything in the WPI Classic package earlier? Oh and I just ran WPI.bat now (haven't done it previously) and got Syntax error, Out of environment space, Bad command or file name. Regedit couldn't import WPI.reg (probably couldn't find the path due to DOS error). [EDIT 2] WPI.reg contains a bad path. It should be: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] Also you need to save it as ANSI (currently it's Unicode) and also add a new line at the end of the file. After these changes it will import succesfully (manually, at least). -

Highly unlikely, since that value was present on my system since... dunno... forever. Someone mentioned the same value earlier as being recommanded on MDGx's tweaks page so I think there's more to it. Ever since I've changed it from 00 00 00 FF to 00 00 08 00, the only noticeable change has been quickly running out of space on drive C. This is odd, especially considering that I previously had swap file disabled through ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1 in sytem.ini > [386Enh] and now I see the swap file increasing in size over 1 GiB at times, leaving me with a few kB of free space. -

Thank you! A few WPI-noob notes if I may: - Browse buttons would be welcome wherever a file path is required (especially when operated in single-monitor no-border mode). - The Save, Read, Add buttons in Config are cut off at the top when window is not maximized. - The tooltip for Begin Install appears behind the Selections dropdown list. - Click Config, Options or About, then click the same button: it will run the script anew, complete with timer, as if it were just started. - Looking at the fields in Config, one doesn't really know what to type in there. Descriptive tooltips for each option would be warmly welcome. - In About > Links it may be best to link directly to this thread; currently both links are broken (they return -Embedding) and context menu is disabled so we can't copy/paste the links or e-mails (anyone could easily navigate away from this thread if it were directly linked to, but finding it would be much harder). Keep up the good work! -

Does anyone here succesfully use this driver with an old GeForce4 Ti4200 VTD8X (128MB)? I have such a card on my system, manufactured by MSI and I could never use any driver other than the manufacturer-provided ones, which are extremely old (latest available is 45.32, built August 2003). Any other drivers I've tried - official ones from nVidia and this one here - would completely kill Direct 3D capabilities. Could anyone please offer an insight or anything to help me update the driver to a more recent version (maybe this unofficial one)? I must mention the card advertises AGP 8x capability but my mobo (Soyo SY-6VBA133) can only support AGP 2x.

At the moment I have 27% free System/GDI resources. IF I start FS Image Viewer, my system will crash for lack of GDI resources - happened more than once. I started up Imagine and resources are now at 25%, so it only took 2%. FastStone is indeed a pretty advanced viewer with nice editing options but it's way too resource-hungry, unfortunately. I'm currently using v3.6 beta and if I'm not mistaken, v3.5 (beta & final) were a little lighter on resources.

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE

Tried again - no dice. I use SlimBrowser on top of IE6-SP1. That was just out of curiosity as I don't need SW anyway. -

Really? How come I'm getting this message then (Win98SE, no KernelEx)? -
Well, it doesn't actually say "please" - I just sweetened up the translation a bit. You're welcome!

@ Kelsenellenelvian: thank you for the Border hint; maybe it could be added as an option (checkbox)? @ jaclaz: workarounds may do for advanced users but the others would find it hard to manage. Until a complete solution is found (if ever), I believe it's best not to rely on that module in such major projects. Hopefully we close the off-topic now before we get beaten with a broomstick. -

Actually I was more worried about the commands within the file than the extension itself. I admit not being familiar with the syntax used in WPI.cmd. Also I notice the reg file has a Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 header which is also not recognized by Win9x regedit; should use REGEDIT4 instead. And... I'm not sure about that .hta. Can the window be moved to a monitor other than primary one, in a multi-monitor environment? EDIT: @ jaclaz: I've been following the Win95cmd topic at an earlier time but found no verdict on usability, integration, etc. The discussion has apparently been suspended. -

I don't think .cmd files will ever work in Win9x... Am I missing something? -
The setup appears to freeze. It says "Initializing setup, please wait. Exploring system registry. The program [...]" and here it freezes.

TClock 3 v 0.3.5 was built in October 2008. However, I've been experimenting with many versions (still got 0.2.2 to 0.3.5 installed; only 0.2.3 missing), plus TClock2 (Aug 2003), TCLock Light (Sep 2004 and May 2006) and Stoic Joker's TCLock3 v1.01 (Dec 2006). Unfortunately, none of the above is bug-free and usable on a daily basis, at least not on my system.

For some reason, the value for the above-mentioned key was 00 00 00 ff on my 98SE system. I changed it to 00 00 08 00 since I only have 256 MB RAM and will see the result. -
I believe this used to be a feature in TClock3, one of it's early versions. Unfortunately, recent versions will crash/freeze a 98 system and the author does not appear to be interested or able to fix the issues.

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
Drugwash replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Indeed it appears as cosmetic, however certain applications may use the reported size in their own reports, thus creating confusion. For example, a simple disk catalogue software (SuperCat) will display the size of all CDFS DVDs as 2GB, which may lead someone into thinking they may be partly burned (open session) or corrupt. May also mislead regarding the required free destination space when copying from such DVD to another support.Thank you for looking into the issue. -

Oh well, I'm not exactly back; more like trying to find a temporary refuge for a troubled mind. Regarding the quoted phrase, it should've been [...] a similar 4.7GB DVD with many smaller files is written as CDFS. I admit not being familiar with neither UDF nor CDFS and not having the time and will to fill in the blanks right now. All I know is that both DVDs have been burned with Nero Express, who automatically chose the file system and this is where I'm asking (myself) what makes it choose one over the other. The more important question is how to modify the CDFS driver to recognize large capacity optical media (such as dual-layer DVDs, Blu-Ray and whatever may come next).
