Well, the setup was built using Indigo Rose's Setup Factory and can't extract the contents for analysis. However, KernelEx can be (temporarily) installed and coupon setup can be put in WinME+ compatibility mode to allow installation and then the installed files can be checked for dependencies and whatnot.

The WindowsME GDI files (both GDI.EXE and GDI32.DLL) can be installed on 98SE systems (in DOS mode and only both of them at once). I've done that few years ago and it helped running certain stubborn application. There is an updated pack at MDGx's site (4.90.3003), can safely be used. They may however require some additional library, can't remember now, so make sure you keep a backup copy of both files at hand, just in case.

Yeah, I've been setting middle button to double-click since years ago - it really comes off-hand when I go over to someone else's machine and I have to actually click twice on left button. Anyway, Logitech mice are not bad at all, actually the internal design ensures a long lifetime, but drivers may be party-poopers. The native Win98SE Logitech driver has a smooth movement and it works great in my dual-view environment. I only installed the wheel mouse and Mouseware for testing some scripts I'm working on but I hope to finish'em soon and get back to my dear old 3-buttoned M-S38. Until then, I'll keep an eye on screensaver/power-off behavior; if you don't have/need the wheel on your mouse, you may remove Mouseware and revert to native W98 Logitech driver. It supports setting middle button as double-click through a simple registry setting. The actual registry path may differ a bit, but I hope you get the idea: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Logitech\MouseWare\CurrentVersion\PS2\0000 (may be 0001 or similar) "DoubleClick"="0010" is the setting you need (default is "0000"). To understand the logic: each zero is a button, in order: Left, Right, Middle, Reserved (?) Good luck!

What is your OS version? I think it refers to GDI32.DLL rather than GDIPLUS.DLL. Please read the details here .

Yesterday I have briefly installed Maxthon 2.5.1.4751 in an attempt to test some web-related issues. Long story short, it uses as many Unicode function versions as possible, but inspite that, they all seem to load fine here except for mfc42u.dll - that one throws a messagebox stating it can only be run on Windows NT and not on Windows 95 or 3.1 (!!!) and also on a Dependency Walker profiling it requires mfc42loc.dll (localized version of mfc42.dll, I suppose). Note that I did not have KernelEx installed at the time (just didn't occur to me ). 1. Has anyone tested the 2.x line of Maxthon with KernelEx and got it working? 2. If not working, what's the ETA of implementing mfc42u.dll's function set in KernelEx, if any? (this may well be in line with SlugFiller's question above)

Do you happen to have the Logitech Mouseware driver installed and running? I have installed v9.79.025 yesterday after (temporarily, hopefully) replacing my old 3 button mouse (also Logitech but using native W98 driver) with a M-S48a wheel mouse (rebranded by Compaq). This morning when I woke up, both monitors were on, staring at me, despite the 14 minutes blank screensaver and 15 minutes monitor power-off settings. There also was a secondary (disabled) mouse in Device Manager - leftover from my previous attempts of using native Win drivers, trying to avoid Mouseware installation. Well, it could all be just coincidence, but it's worth checking.

Now that I looked closer, I did notice the systray flickering, but it's happening rarely here (GeForce4 Ti4200 VTD8X, 2monitors @ 60Hz refresh). After disabling and reenabling tray clock, it only flickers ocasionally. However, I keep taskbar autohidden so it's really of no importance to me. What may be more of a disturbance is the taskbar buttons flickering when quickly hovering the Start Menu items up and down. While doing that, the taskbar buttons seem to be briefly displaced horizontally and a ghost empty button quickly glimpses onto the empty taskbar space. Very much similar to an old TClock3 issue (at the time it was still working in Win98SE). Not much of a bother to me either (it's probably been there for a long time, unnoticed), but since it's reporting time... @ RodgerOver: I think one of your themes' initialization file may be corrupt, please check them all thoroughly (%WINDIR%\Resources\Themes). (far off, as seen below - disregard this)

I'll try to be as bluntless as possible: the scrollbar issue is almost fixed. In detail: the huge jump down is gone. However, the thumb still jumps up or down a pixel or two when it's not at the very top and gets clicked. What I noticed is that this jump is directly related to the window height and there is a certain size/ratio where the jump dissapears completely. Nevertheless, it's extremely minor and completely harmless so unless someone else reports bigger issues, this one can count as solved. Other than that: - ClearType sticks to enabled [fixed] - Installer and RPConfig appear between monitors [fixed] Dunno about the rest, since my theme is pink/magenta anyway and my CRT monitors & bad eyesight don't make much difference between 32bit icons and lower. All in all, this appears as a solid release (knock on wood).

You need to add the VENDOR ID string of your card to the list of supported IDs in the INF - that's what's expected. That doesn't guarantee it'll work though; on top of all, there's system dependencies and NT drivers have the "bad habit" of being directly dependant on ntoskrnl.exe, hal.dll and maybe other NT-only system files. You can find if there's missing files/functions by analyzing the driver file(s) with Dependency Walker. To get the ID string, open Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information, go to Components > Display and check the Registry Key entry at the top. Good luck!

I renamed 'My Computer' to ALT+0160 years ago and the system's still up and running. Haven't been fiddling with changing codepages though.
-
Oh, didn't cross my mind it could do that. Thank you for the heads up and sorry for the off-topic. BTW, I believe the always-on-top issue was caused by one of my scripts, so false alarm on that one too. I've yet to check if Nero still crashes the GDI when clicking that button, but it might take a few days. Except for scrollbars and Clear Type always reenabling itself although not installed (old reported RPConfig issue), everything else is OK.

Tihiy, do you (still) have AutoHotkey installed or at hand? Could you please perform a test for me? Run the following AHK script and see if it displays 2 icons. I have problems on my system trying to extract icons with resource numbers 133 to 172 from shell32.dll; extracting from other libraries (such as moricons.dll) seems to work. I have no idea whose fault can be. Gui, Add, Groupbox, x5 y5 w79 h56, Shell icons Gui, Add, Picture, x10 y20 Icon133, shell32.dll Gui, Add, Picture, x+5 yp Icon28, shell32.dll Gui, Show, w89 return GuiClose: ExitApp For what is worth, my shell32.dll is the original one that came on the CD (4.72.3612.1700), unmodified in any way.

Is it me or with 9.0.9a and later, Explorer lost its Always-on-top capability? I'm always getting maximized applications override the autohidden taskbar and custom toolbars, which is extremely annoying when trying to switch tasks or run other apps. Anyone else could confirm?
-
I see scrollbar jumping has not been fixed. That's the only thing really bothering me, the rest is relatively OK. Well, the installer and RPConfig still pop up between the two monitors but since they're both a one-time deal, it's not much of a bother. Apologies if I sound harsh, got a terrible headache.

Yes, that's where the fast shutdown option should be. Odd that it's not there for you. :-/

Oh, none first-handed, because I uninstalled KEx as soon as I got that notification in RP9. However, after reading the reports around I realize there is some sort of incompatibility between them and since real life doesn't currently allow me to use the other machines for testing, I decided not to put my main machine at risk. Sorry for that, I'm just going through some bad times. BTW, I have no more connections with the Miranda IM project so no need for you to put extra effort in for me. Also, since I don't currently have any replacement messenger, can't contact you in ICQ anymore as I promised. Thank you for everything you've done so far!

thydreamwalker: Nero 7.2.7.0 is said to be the last version working in Win9x without KernelEx. I've had 7.0.0.0 installed on my machine since September 2006 and has been working fine so far, apart from a relatively recent (and minor, to me) issue with UberSkin and a fresh 'not enough memory' warning after upgrading from 256 to 512 MB RAM. Xeno86: I'm sorry but I cannot curently test KernelEx since I'm using RP9. When their conflict will have been fixed, I'll resume testing.

Cannot find any Environment tab in Win98SE's MSCONFIG. However, while there, try to mark Disable fast shutdown in General > Advanced, see if it helps.

98SE won't reboot with External USB Drive ON
Drugwash replied to joe tweaker's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Have you tried asking at Wim's BIOS forums for a possible BIOS update/tweak? -
Do you have Dial-Up Networking 1.4 upgrade installed? It might be needed. Try running Add New Hardware in Control Panel, let it check for new hardware and see what it detects, particularly COM ports (try that before installing drivers as well as after). Even when drivers are installed, you may have to manually change COM port in modem properties. I vaguely remember having had such hassle with a friend's modem but unfortunately got no clear details about the correct procedure.

A 512MB video card is not recommended for Win9x (except maybe for WinME), as debated around.
-
Is there a setup executable in the driver package? If so, have you tried to run that setup instead of manually installing through the New Hardware Wizard? I found this driver package here that contains a HXFSetup.exe - might be a good idea to try it.

CMI 8338 has a different ID string and may not be found in certain driver packages. Find your ID and check with this site for the vendor name; also look in the driver package, see if CMAUDIO.INF contains that ID string, otherwise it won't work. I've struggled a lot with various packages found on the web, especially due to the lack of configuration options regarding the '3 vs. 5 jacks' issue. Eventually I did find a setup on one of my CDs that allows it and it's merely a matter of changing values in setup.ini (also possibly a different Setup.exe): ;CMI8738 Setup.ini for driver install ; web downloading upgrade package drivers [InstallOption] ; WebSetup=0 for customers, 1 for downloading, 2 for single driver installation WebSetup=1 ; FullPackage=0 for web upgrade version, 1 for full package drivers FullPackage=0 ; DriverOnly=1 means install drivers only, 0 means install both APs and drivers. DriverOnly=1 ; InstallWDMDriver=0 means install VxD driver, 1 means install WDM driver InstallWDMDriver=1

Better check the VENDOR ID string in the registry. I have a C-Media CMI8738/C3DX card that's actually manufactured by Diamond Multimedia (appears as Xtreme Sound in Control Panel and Device Manager) and I managed to find their drivers (5.12.01.0046.5.1) after quite a bit of searching around. You may get lucky and find a manufacturer that still offers their drivers. edit: apologies, card type CMI8335 was wrong, got confused. Oh and AFAICS, Diamond Multimedia have pulled their Win9x/NT/Linux drivers too. Outrageous!

Honestly, I don't know. So many updates, hotfixes and whatnot on my system and I got a bad memory. You can however check MDGx's page, see which package(s) contain that file and then try to find that particular version by extracting the file from the package(s) and checking version. It's also possible that certain web pages contain incompatible code. Some have been updated to follow IE8 and may cause trouble in IE6. I've had consistent crashes on a certain site no earlier than yesterday, with SlimBrowser (my default IE-based browser), something new to me.
