  1. I'm not entirely sure about OS dependency. AFAICS, the SysInfo tool lists certain non-IE files (such as win.com, for example), so there may be an interdependency there somewhere. However, I don't see any 98FE / 98SE separation within the IE-SP1 cabs; there's only ME/NT/2k separation, so it may be safe to assume that the same files would be installed for both 98FE and 98SE. Other than that, the installed hotfixes could also make a difference. Regardless, the interaction between IE files and OS-specific files may have different outcome.
  2. Ah, apologies for the confusion - I completely overlooked the FE specification.
  3. For the sake of it, here's my list. <removed win.com remarks; it's just certain info unavailable, not the file itself> iexplore.exe is indeed not present because it's been renamed due to the bad habit of certain applications - not to mention malware, although I got none present - to directly call iexplore.exe instead of the default browser (SlimBrowser) msjava.dll is missing because I've uninstalled MS Java Virtual Machine. Dunno why wsock32n.dll is missing - probably it's not needed in my configuration. IE-related crashes are extremely rare on my system and usually happen due to other applications running prior to or simultaneously with the browser. advapi32.dll 4.90.0.3000 64 KB 08.06.2000 17:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM advpack.dll 6.0.2900.2172 98 KB 01.08.2004 17:01:04 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM browselc.dll 6.0.2800.1106 62 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM browseui.dll 6.0.2800.1916 995 KB 10.12.2007 15:46:16 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM ckcnv.exe 6.0.2800.1106 8 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM comctl32.dll 5.81.4916.400 536 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM crypt32.dll 5.131.1877.5 363 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM enhsig.dll 5.0.1877.8 4 KB 17.08.1999 16:10:34 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM iemigrat.dll 6.0.2436.1 12 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM iesetup.dll 6.0.2800.1106 57 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM iexplore.exe File not present Not Available Not Available Not Available imagehlp.dll 5.0.2178.1 140 KB 08.06.2000 17:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM inseng.dll 6.0.2800.1607 68 KB 10.12.2007 12:38:54 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM jobexec.dll 5.0.0.1 60 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM jscript.dll 5.6.0.8831 455 KB 17.05.2006 11:43:58 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM jsproxy.dll 6.0.2800.1607 12 KB 10.12.2007 12:39:14 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM mshtml.dll 6.0.2800.1607 2642 KB 10.12.2007 12:38:46 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM msjava.dll File not present Not Available Not Available Not Available msoss.dll 5.131.1877.3 148 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM msxml.dll 8.0.6730.0 484 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM occache.dll 6.0.2800.1106 86 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM ole32.dll 4.71.3328.0 760 KB 29.03.1999 12:36:12 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM oleaut32.dll 2.40.4519.0 612 KB 31.07.2006 11:12:46 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM olepro32.dll 5.0.5014.0 104 KB 31.03.2003 15:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM rsabase.dll 5.0.1877.7 99 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM rsaenh.dll 5.0.1877.8 98 KB 17.08.1999 13:14:36 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM rasapi32.dll 4.10.0.2222 212 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM rsasig.dll 5.0.1877.7 4 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM schannel.dll 4.87.1959.1877 121 KB 23.09.1999 12:04:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM shdoc401.dll 5.50.4914.1400 481 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM shdocvw.dll 6.0.2800.1916 1309 KB 10.12.2007 15:46:10 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM shell32.dll 4.72.3612.1700 1368 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM shlwapi.dll 6.0.2800.1916 394 KB 10.12.2007 15:46:02 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM url.dll 6.0.2800.1106 104 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM urlmon.dll 6.0.2800.1607 452 KB 10.12.2007 12:39:14 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM vbscript.dll 5.6.0.8825 428 KB 09.08.2004 21:27:06 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM webcheck.dll 6.0.2800.1106 252 KB 17.09.2006 04:04:04 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM win.com Not Available 24 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS Not Available wininet.dll 6.0.2800.1607 562 KB 10.12.2007 12:39:18 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM winsock.dll 4.10.0.1998 21 KB 17.09.2006 01:09:54 C:\WINDOWS wintrust.dll 5.131.1877.5 46 KB 29.08.2002 00:00:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM wsock.vxd 4.10.0.1998 15 KB 23.04.1999 22:22:00 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM wsock32.dll 4.10.0.1998 40 KB 17.09.2006 01:09:54 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM wsock32n.dll File not present Not Available Not Available Not Available
  4. Personally I would be very upset if any application would do that without me specifically telling/allowing it to do so.If there are any generic settings that could be altered, a Control Panel applet would be the best choice. The user would know if it's installed by looking in Add/Remove Programs; there's also the Compatibility tab that indicates KernelEx's presence. In both the above situations, the version and build number (maybe even build date) of KernelEx could be shown, for quick identification.
  5. Hehe... thanks. Coincidentally, I have found the same build at free-codecs.com, soon after posting the previous post. Thing is, GOM has a quirk somewhere in that it doesn't automatically fall back to an external codec if it can't find/use the internal one. I usually keep the Quick play option enabled, which stands for "use internal codecs" and was hoping it'd do that, but apparently it doesn't because it returned an unknown codec error, so I had to disable quick play and then it picked up the x264 codec. Unfortunately, the compression seems to be too high and my machine can't process the file in real time (well, there's some extra load on the CPU from other app and some IRQ sharing/conflict between network card and sound card that makes the sound stutter when download speed is high) so the playback was extremely choppy and with artifacts, but the important thing is it works.
  6. I had to install DivX 5.2.1 against my will, for certain formats that were not recognized by GOM or Xvid (such as Div3-SlowMotion). The H264 codec I have is the one found by GOM (vssh3dec.exe from Videosoft, v2.2 beta); I had another one - a VfW or something - and it wouldn't work either; maybe my videocard and/or driver is the problem; can't install a newer driver than the latest available at MSI (45.32, if I'm not mistaken), otherwise I lose Direct3D. I don't think I ever managed to use VMR9 with this card.
  7. Have you actually watched an H264 movie? With the decoder I have, GOM crashes instantly and VLC 0.8.5 (later versions are bad) plays with artifacts for a minute or so before freezing.
  8. I "love" their attitude in regard to 9x: I'm fine with GOM Player, thank you.
  9. AIDA32/Everest might be able to help. It's been years since I last fiddled with a modem, will let submix8c take over the helping task here.
  10. SATA drives are not recognized by Win98SE unless the BIOS is set to compatibility (PATA) mode for those drives, however that may yield slow performance. As for the 80GB drive install, when the Hardware Wizard pops up, just dismiss the dialog(s) (hit Cancel) until Windows finishes the boot sequence, then copy the driver kit(s) to the HDD, unzip where appropriate and install them manually or go to Control Panel > System, select the problematic device(s) and choose Update Driver. To explain the above: Windows detects the new hardware early in the boot stage and pops up the Hardware Wizard before loading the CD-ROM driver, that is why you cannot "see" the optical drive while trying to install drivers from a CD/DVD. [EDIT] If the machine won't boot with the XP CD while you're sure the BIOS is set to boot from CD-ROM first, this can only mean one of the 2 things: either the CD is damaged or is not bootable. Try another bootable CD, verified on another machine, for confirmation. Thanks submix8c; still missed the above bit first, though.
  11. Certain modems are hard to install and they need a trick: manually add a COM port through Control panel > Add new hardware, then install the drivers and point them to the newly added COM port. After installation, the drivers may or may not detect yet another COM port and assign it to the modem; at that point, you may remove the manually added COM port. To make sure you got the right drivers, you may have to retrieve the VendorID string from the registry or through a third-party utility and search for the manufacturer, based on that string. Alternatively, try to find the FCC number on the modem board and search the FCC database for the manufacturer, then go to its homepage and search for the appropriate driver.
  12. I've grown old dreaming of a house similar to H.O.U.S.E. in the Eureka series. With a network of microphones and proper filters, it may work.
  13. I guess browsers are generally resource-hungry. In my case, it's SlimBrowser that eats up a lot of resources with each open page and it won't free them when a page (tab) is closed; possibly not freeing all allocated resources even when closed. Another one for me is the official eMule, which - when open - only allows me either Miranda or SlimBrowser, but not both. Most likely off-topic, but since I'm here, I'd like to ask if there's anybody else getting "Error: not enough memory" in Nero 7.0.0.0 when trying to burn a DVD (haven't tried CDs) with 512MB of RAM. This is because Nero used to work fine with only 256MB and coincidentally (or not) it started throwing such error right after me upgrading the RAM to 512MB. It does work fine despite that error, but it's annoying having to confirm the message box on each burn. Tihiy, I'll contact you sometime these days about this GDI heap topic.
  14. Works for me at the time of posting (2:43 PM EST).
  15. Hmm, I didn't modify any project settings apart from output paths (and language -- later edit), AFAIK. I'll checkout the project files fresh and compare with mine. Will report back.[EDIT] You are right, somehow the Custom Build section was missing from the dsp projects. VC6 must've done something funky. Everything's fine now, including printf. Thank you! [EDIT 2] There's still one issue left... forgot about it: custom build settings for prep (both Release and Debug) won't work; either bad paths or wrong variables, dunno. Could you please elaborate on what exactly those two steps are meant to do and how to fix it according to my local paths? $(OutDir)\$(TargetName) $(WkspDir)\apilibs\kexbases $(OutDir)\$(TargetName) $(WkspDir)\apilibs\kexbasen --------------------Configuration: prep - Win32 Release-------------------- Compiling... prep.cpp Linking... This board messes with the code boxes, adding email tags to anything that contains the @ symbol.
  17. Just use Nir Sofer's TurnFlash to disable that... thing (doesn't work in XP+). I hate Flash with a passion.
  18. No, I'm pretty radical when it comes to stuff that negatively impacts software that works fine in regular environment. Will try next version when it comes out, if there's any mention of the eMule issue being fixed in the changelog.
  19. Official eMule 0.49c won't finish any download. Final hashing always ends up in error "Unexpected error while completing <file name> [...] This function is only valid in Win32 mode". Uninstalling KernelEx 4.0.11 (official release, not a self-built version) fixed the issue.
  20. Works for me too, albeit slow (128 kB/s).
  21. Tihiy, I forgot to mention that I left out Clear Type at installation time as I didn't need it. I figured this may be related to the fact that the Clear Type setting doesn't "stick" to 'disabled' in RPConfig. So far I haven't had any of those GDI crashes, so fingers crossed. I did install the modded dibeng.dll from your package though, since the crashes used to mention it before.
  22. I use that multi card reader extremely rarely. Actually, I only own a 1GB micro-SD that I keep in my (lately useless) Huawei mobile phone and I wanted a card reader for the case I'd have to give that phone back or would "die". But heck, why not a multi-reader? A friend might come over with a camera or other device that would need specific (and usually unavailable) 9x drivers - happened with a HP Photosmart camera, wasted half night to "see" it, to no avail. As for eMule, I've had it run for 6 days in a row and it would've carried on if I didn't have to reboot due to low resources (darn 9x limitation that's being rediscussed around lately). It's taking a break now - got neither free space nor needed files to grab. The only time it would crash - and hopefully it's been fixed in 0.49c - is on close when there's downloads in progress, since I've kinda pushed the max number of connections and sources.
  23. I got a takeMS 64-in-1 USB 2.0 multi card reader/writer and it works fine with NUSB 3.3. Doesn't come with any drivers at all. Shows up as 5 removable drives and it's a PITA to remove all of them one by one through NUSB. No benchmarking figures since I got a VIA VT6202 PCI-to-USB 2.0 card that was never that good with transfers.
  24. Report based on installation and usage of 9.0.3: • Scrollbars behave erratically: jump down when clicked, jump at the bottom (and the file scrolls with them!) when thumb dragged close to the top (both happen in relatively large files) • Installer and RPConfig dialog start between screens in a multi-monitor environment and don't remember last position; try to display them either on primary monitor or on the monitor with the active window and save position on close • 32-bit support & icons were left out at install time, yet the RPConfig dialog started off with 32-bit icon quality selected • the groupbox showing the selected theme needs to be about 4-6px higher as it's currently cut at the top and bottom... or is this a desired behavior (I see the system icon set behaves identically)? • Use Clear Type gets marked everytime RPConfig is started (doesn't remember being disabled) I believe the installer should automatically move (or at least, copy) all the themes found in Resources - regardless if they're official or not - since most likely one of them is active and should be automatically reapplied from the new location. So far no clash with KernelEx 4.0 but there's still a long way to go. Good job so far! P.S. Please fix the scrollbar behavior, it's killing me. Used to work fine in 8.3.6...
  25. Why am I always the last to know about such important news...? On to it now; thanks for the heads up.
