  2. New Mortal Kombat bloodier than ever By Tom Lane CNN Sunday, November 24, 2002 Posted: 9:27 AM EST (1427 GMT) (CNN) -- Mortal Kombat, one of the first video games to popularize the use of blood and guts to entice its audience, is back with a new version that is bloodier than ever. Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance has fighters whose wounds bleed long after injuries are inflicted and blood is a constant companion. This makes for a very messy battleground at the end of the fight, but allows for interesting effects, such as combatants leaving bloody footprints on the ground. The game also presents a plethora of ways of finishing an opponent: beheadings, ripping skeletons out of bodies or soul stealing. Midway is banking on its latest version of Kombat to cash in on millions of dollars in video game sales this holiday season. The game is expected to join a long list of hot sellers aimed at adults, who make up half of all gamers, according to the Interactive Digital Software Association. Turning the tide In an industry where a single game can turn the tide -- just ask Take-Two Interactive Software, which saw its value more than triple in a year thanks to Grand Theft Auto 3 -- Midway is relying on its flagship Mortal Kombat franchise to replace blood red ink with black. The company has taken a beating, falling from almost $25 per share in late 1999 to teetering around $5 for the second half of 2002. Syndicated video games columnist Marc Saltzman said video games reflect the reality of the marketplace: sex and violence sells. "Keep in mind those who played Pac-Man and Space Invaders in the late '70s and early '80s are now into their 30s and having kids of their own," he said. "Video games are a form of entertainment -- so it makes sense to have content that's appropriate/appealing to different audiences." Tracing the bloodshed To a large degree, blood defines the Mortal Kombat series. The original is famous for popularizing mature content in video games when it came out in 1992. A slew of similar games quickly flooded the market, but Mortal Kombat remained the 800-pound gorilla of mature software in the console market. Still, programmer Ed Boon, who helped create the first Mortal Kombat, downplayed the violence in the game. "The fact that it is targeted towards older players has a lot less to do with its success than the fact that there is a great story, state-of-the-art graphics, and a fun play mechanic for players to learn," he said. It's been four years since the last version of Mortal Kombat was released. Midway, the company that produces the game, was shifting its focus from building arcade machines to creating home video games and researching ways to make their games more exciting, Boon said. Mastering deadly moves The fifth version of the game, expected to be released Friday, puts players in a 3-D universe with an army of fighters, each with an arsenal of deadly moves to master. "What separates it from other games is the completely new fighting mechanic which gives each character three individual fighting styles that he can switch into during the battle," Boon said. Deadly Alliance introduces a reward system called "kombat kurrency." Players earn coins for overcoming challenges and use them to unlock hidden secrets such as new fighters, hidden arenas, and artwork. The game is available for Playstation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube consoles. Source:
  3. Yea, I agree. Well, the article says that AOL redirects the call to long distance if local dial-up lines are not available. After installing AOL software for years I have always noticed the message. I think the point the lawyers are going to try and make is that when advertised for free there should be no incidentals. Free is free? Tough one.
  4. Yea. It makes me think that Microsoft could do the sme thing. Move their interests outside the U.S. and avoid all the court cases! Remember that thingy about Bill buying an island and creating his own nation, hmm.
  5. Hollywood Tries to Corner Kazaa A federal court in Los Angeles will consider in the forthcoming days, whether entertainment companies may perform legal actions against the distributors of Kazaa peer to peer software. Kazaa is a Dutch software company. However distributor company Sharman Networks, is registered at Vanuatu, an island-state in South Pacific Ocean. The software is also distributed by servers outside U.S. so the argument that may be used, is that U.S. courts have no jurisdiction. Where is Vanuatu? 6. This is interesting. I cannot count the times when I have been chatting in AOL Chat Rooms when users had to bite ths bullet. Man Pays $916 for 22 Days of `Free' AOL Terry Thompson, a Nebraska man who lives off of Social Security checks, ended up owing $916.20 because he did not realize he would have to pay long distance charges to access America Online. America Online states that it believes it is clear in its advertising that toll calls or long distance calls may be necessary for subscribers in areas without local access numbers. Lawyers preparing a class action lawsuit do not agree. American Online is being sued by several consumers who made the same mistake Thompson did. AOL's software will direct some people to long distance numbers when there are no local ones available. Some say they are redirected when local lines are busy. Source: www.omaha.com More

  10. I concur with DMB Fan. IRQ not equal to or less than etc usually points to faulty RAM. Also, a corrupt page file will cause the same error message. Since you have three sticks of RAM and have already removed two sticks and still have the same problem I would suspect that the stick of RAM you are using is a bad stick. Try the remaining two sticks, one at a time, till the problem is resolved. Be advised that all of the memory modules must be the same specification in terms of speed and architecture, i.e. SD-RAM PC 133 6 NS or to that effect. Mis-matched RAM causes the same error messages. In the case of a corrupt page file please note that the page file should be on the same hard drive in the Home Edition of Windows XP. In many cases users find that the problem is the RAM. Even if you narrow down the problem to the RAM a clean installation of Windows XP is necessary for continued trouble free use. Not all that often heat building up in the PC case will also cause the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) message that you are encountering. Last but certainly not least is Video Card drivers. Search this message board and you find long and helpful resolutions in this regard. Welcome to the board Guys.
  11. In the past I have bought a lot of things from eBay. You can search msnwar and see it all. Some of it is good and some of it is not. Fortunately, I have never had a bad experience with eBay. Like speedz, I always do a background check first. Then I email a question or two to the seller and examine the response for reliability. The Power Sellers are the best though there was a recent hack that made the news where some bad guys faked a few Power Sellers accounts. A good tip is to maintain a word document on good Power Sellers and stay in contact with them any way you can. The next time you want to buy something from eBay reference your documentation and contact the Power Seller privately. Most of my buys are actually behind the scene and usually much cheaper. It saves the seller the cost of posting the ad and time. I have been fortunate and never had a bad experience.
