  5. Cheated by Chips Source: http://rss.com.com/2009-1040-253289.html That bargain PC you picked up at the swap meet is starting to act funny, spitting out bad data, making odd noises and emanating a smell reminiscent of an overworked model train. Congratulations: You've fallen for one of the oldest scams in the PC book. Tech-savvy con artists known as "re-markers" overclock and alter the appearance of processors to pass them off as speedier, more expensive models. Re-marked chips most often end up in budget no-name PCs sold at flea markets, small Web operations and other hard-to-trace places. The practice is almost as old as the PC itself and may have reached a peak several years ago, amid feverish computer sales growth and soaring processor prices. However, Intel spokesman Manny Vera estimates that re-marked chips now account for way less than 1 percent of the 150 million processors that went on the market last year, thanks partly to techniques used by Intel and other chipmakers to thwart widespread overclocking. "Some of the technologies we've been implementing in our processors have made it a lot more difficult to overclock," Vera says. "It's like everything else: If you really want to break it, you'll find a way. But if we slow them down so that it takes the re-markers a couple of months to figure out how to do it, you really cut down the opportunity for them to make money doing this." Advanced Micro Devices has made changes in its manufacturing process that make it nearly impossible to alter the appearance of the chip, spokesman Drew Prairie said. "We take a laser and we mark the frequency and the product name on the die, so it's virtually impossible for someone to alter that writing," he said. Vera also credits increased cooperation between law enforcement agencies and chipmakers and the availability of tests such as Intel's Frequency ID Utility, which lets consumers quickly know if a chip is running at its rated speed. Still, determined crooks have found ways to circumvent just about every anti-re-marking measure imposed by chipmakers, leaving much of the responsibility with consumers to make sure they're getting genuine goods. Consumers should be suspicious of any deal that sounds too good to be true, advises Sgt. Nick Muyo, the San Jose, Calif., Police Department's representative on REACT, a multi-agency task force targeting computer crime. And know whom you're buying from, Muyo warns. Problems with re-marked chips often don't appear until after a PC has been in use for a year or longer, giving crooks a lengthy head start. "A little bit of common sense goes a long way," Muyo says. "For starters, don't buy from someone where the only contact you have is a Hotmail address. You'd be surprised how many people do that." -DB
  6. Ah, crap Basically, it is the same board, but has the SiS Chipset which is supposed to better than the i850 in that it provides more features and integrates better sound. It is a very stable board. The real difference is the RAM. DDR vs RDRAM. We have a ongoing discussion for your board at: http://techzonez.com/forums/showthread.php...=&threadid=2649 If you find a good review let us know. This may be on my Christmas list.
  7. The i850 chipset is the key to speed for this board. This board is designed for overclocking. Only RAMBUS will take it past its official 3.2 GB memory bandwidth. Do not use DDR400 PC3200 as it has had stability problems in testing. Keep in mind that you must use 32 bit RAM at all times. Your configuration will overshadow similar AMD Athlon XP 1800+ configurations when playing graphics intensive games. Step the clock cycles 1 at a time till your are comfortable with game performance. This board is an overclockers dream. Keep in mind that this board scores average on all business bench marks even with the FSB 533 and the PC2100 DIMMS. That is okay. This board was not designed for servers or work stations. Theoretically, the onboard DSP codec for sound uses a small fraction of the CPU. You can disable it in the BIOS and install a better audio card and take the burden off the CPU. This board does NOT support ATA/133 IDE channels and AGP 8X. So no need to buy an ATA-133 HD. Stay with the ATA-100 in an IDE configuration. Very nice board, chipset, and BIOS. Check out this review for additional tweaks: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973...3,428366,00.asp
  8. Did you do a clean install of Windows after replacing the motherboard and cpu? I learned to always do a clean install when replacing a mobo or cpu because Windows often does a poor job of recognizing new components.
  9. What about radio and recording? Seems I never heard this much bunk till CD Writers, MP3s, and the interenet came along. Wouldn't it be something if everytime an artist busted someone for downloading music a watchdog group would expose the artist for a similar crime. Like copying someone elses lyrics. Eye for an eye, per say.
  10. gamehead200, wouldn't his PC have to be on the internet full time?
  11. I was half asleep in class when this came up, so I can't remember the details. If I remember correctly, user accounts/scripts can only be run from the admin level. Admin installs the script for each user and grants permission at the same time. And now a word from our sponsor: - How to Assign a Logon Script to a Profile for a Local User: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q315245 This article describes how to assign a logon script to a profile for a local user's account on a Windows XP-based workstation or on a Windows-based server. This logon script runs when the local user logs on locally to the computer but does not run... - A Logon Script Does Not Work If %0 or %0\..\ Calls Multiple Commands http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q318689 Logon scripts that run in Windows XP may not work if %0 or %0\..\ is used in the script. The specific error message that appears depends on the command that follows %0 or %0\..\. A typical error message is "File not found." If the batch file calls a ...

  16. Welcome to the board behzad and thank you for the information.
  17. Yepper, if that aint good enought reason to quit college and marry trailer trash then I don't know what is Dude, grab some rich old bag living in a mansion and play her for your internet connection of choice, colege fees, hell a new car. Who the heck am I supposed to run to when I am in over my head? Hope it works out for you bud. Take care.
  18. FthrJack, enjoy playing MSNwar.. out of curio what are you using, Gnome or KDE? and what browser? I don't know for sure yet. My understanding is that Red Hat is using KDE now as a default. I'll probably load Red Hat using KDE and Mandrake using Gnome. Then swap them later if I can. Browser wise I'll stick with Mozilla probably. Like you said, just playing I learned that Mandrake does not include support for MP3 because of copyright stuff. Got to find a way around that.
  19. What did you get for your birthday? Thanks for joining MSFN. You are a nice person. Happy Brithday Missy
  20. Yea, me to, I asked the same question before.
  21. Upper right-hand corner of the person's post is a icon labeled "Quote". Click it
  22. I downloaded the Mandrake Linux 9.0, Three CDs. I think I will buy the Red Hat 8.0 Personal Version. Mandrake. All are ISO files. I extracted all three files with IsoBuster and burned them to CDs with NERO. The first CD is necessary only for installation. It is bootable though I have not tested that feature yet. It has an autostart feature. After I popped it into the CD-ROM drive it started up nicely. I hope to install it next weekend. Here is the screen-shot. As you can see it supports multiple languages.
  23. So that I do not mislead you when I buy the 5-6 PCs every year ... I mean that 5-6 friends and I buy them at one time from one source so we get a volume discount. They are "all" certainly not for me personally. And we sell our old machines at the same time so we get the best bang for the buck. When you sell 5-6 PCs with the same parts on ebay they sell fast versus trying to sell one machine at a time. This year it looks like some of the same people who bought from us in the past are going to be repeat buyers. Hope it stays this way. This is a good and honest method to keep yourself in new "PC innards" every 12 to 18 months. Again we just upgrade the CPUs, Boards, and RAM occasionally replacing power supplies, fans, and the like. Almost nothing looks better under the Christmas tree than a new Board with a pretty red ribbon. Well, when I was younger my wife once tied a red ribbon around ... er another subject.
  24. Well, I like the Promise ATA 133 RAID, Intel LAN, Creative Sound, (All major manufacture products), Dual BIOS that supports overclocking stepping, and it is a 4 layer board. The 8X AGP and Bluetooth would be nice, but I can't afford a 8X card right now and I don't see any Bluetooth products in my home environments future. It will be at least two years if not more before game developers have anything ready for 8X. Two USB ports are kind of standard, but $5 - $10, gets you an additional two port panel if you need it (mounts on the fron or back of the case). It is feature rich I suppose and the documentation is excellent compaired to most boards for slightly more money and less features. Some of the Intel boards look good, but I can't find anything with all of the above features for that price except in the US and by the time I add shipping and handling to include the conversion rate I take a 16% hit on I could probally add another stick of RAM. I perfer name brand RAM. There are 256 MB Infineon Brands here for half the price of Samsung, but I have returned a lot of Infineon sticks in the last year. Take back kinda, I don't overclock my personal home machine, but my kids like to overclock their game machines. I like to have two or three machines with matching parts, so I usually buy two machines at a time. Actually, here at home I just upgrade everything at once. Me and my friends usually go in together and buy at least 6 of everything once a year. We get at least 30% off the package this way. Computer clubs do that a lot. I couldn't price more than one at the time of the post. Here is something I used to do as a part time work-from-home job. On my web site I would maintain a private list of parts from mostly eBay sellers and make the list available to friends and associates. When we had enough to meet discounted volume deals ... I dealed. The profits were kept at a minimal, but I usually scored an extra stick of RAM or something now and then for free.
  25. Everything cost more in Germany and I don't know why. Some people say its the taxes. There are cheaper sources here in Germany than the one I quoted. If you can find a buddy that has a wholeseller licence than the price would be about 40% cheaper for each item. The savings are substantial but then the buyer really has nothing to fall back on other than the individual items manufacturer warranty. The P4 and The P4 Northwood cost the same here too. I don't know why. But thats a sweet combination.
