Liquid Audio Going Down the Drain Ending months of speculation about the company's future, the board of directors of Liquid Audio voted unanimously Friday to liquidate the company to shareholders. The company which sought to provide encoded digital audio to consumers, protecting copyrights through copy protection, faced an internal struggle between shareholders who wanted to merge with Alliance Entertainment and those who wanted to liquidate. Chief executive Gerald Kearby resigned last month after the merger with Alliance was cancelled. Shares of Liquid Audio will be distributed to shareholders on 20 Dec. Liquid Audio sold its encoding technology to Microsoft in September for $7 million. Source: ZDNet.co.uk

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - The FBI arrested a teenager accused of slipping razor blades into three hot apple pies at the McDonald's where he worked. A customer who bit into the dessert suffered a minor cut on the lip. Adam Joseph Fontenot, 18, of Eunice, was arrested Tuesday and jailed on tampering charges. He could get up to 10 years in prison. The incident occurred Nov. 24 at a restaurant in Eunice, about 150 miles west of New Orleans. Federal prosecutor James McManus would not say what the motive might have been, but he said Fontenot did know the victim. Defense attorney Gerald Block said his client had previously been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment. A spokeswoman at McDonald's headquarters in Chicago confirmed that Fontenot has been fired, but declined additional comment Source: Netscape Channels, APO

So this will work even if I don't have a single Seagate drive on my PC? Conan, I have used it on IBM, Maxtor, and Western Digital hard drives in the past. Matter of fact I just used it on a Maxtor this morning. All it does is identify the hard drive and perform the zero-fill. Another good one is the Ontrack Disk Manager. http://www.ontrack.com I use the Ontrack Disk Manager at work when a hard drive needs zero-filled and was previously used with Partition Magic. From the Ontrack FAQ. We have seen in the past that much of the utility software currently popular is quite compatible with Disk Manager. Microsoft native FDISK, Partition Magic, Partition It, and most other partition utilities have no compatibility issues – so far. Both do the same thing. Matter of taste I guess.

It would be cheaper to fly to the UK than Florida because I will be bringing the familia with me. But Missy says she wants to got to Florida. What was funny was when I told her my next course would cost about $3,000.00 she cringed at the thought. Then I told her that figure included two weeks in Florida for the family. Ha, now she likes the idea. Women!

Interesting comparison. Considering today's technology we are all an easy target to exploit.

filerecovery.com also teachs PC Forensics courses, which looks very interesting. I hope to take the basic course within the next six months. Personally, I would prefer to take the course in the UK. I asked around and a PC Forensics Specialist earns $25.00 an hour.

Maybe he just wants to protect the citizens of the USA? Remember, 911 happened on his watch! I have to admire what he did the day 911 happened. This was missed by a lot of people. The SSA forced him into Air Force One and tried to keep him airborne during the event. He forced the SSA to land, so he could get his hands dirty. I admire that. His stance on terrorism is undoubtedly staunch. His idea is to cut off the head of the snake before the snake can bite again. As President he feels he has no other choice in he matter. The man swore to protect the U.S. Let him do it. World War? Maybe. I do not want war. But I do not want to see something like 911 happen again to anyone of us. If it must be war to stop the threat then it must be war.

The fans on the CPUs are the ones that intel ships with them. The CPUs were purchased and installed in December 2000 and ran for less than 24 hours of use. The system set in storage all these years till I found it this month. Brand new really. I see the point about load. Wondered about that myself. Two weeks from now will be my vacation, so I will see about monitoring the temperture when everything is running. I am waiting because I will be adding an addtional hard drive and server software that xperties suggested last month. The limited information I could find on a dual CPU sustems indicated that actually only one CPU works until it maxes out. Then the other kicks in and both are synched togather and start performing shared instructions. Temperture must go up. I don't jave any other fans in there at the moment, but will be adding two just because I'll have the case open when I add the hard drive and stuff. Thanks for the input. Now I know that its bare bones temperature is right I can proceed with the last of the changes. Thanks

Sooner or later all hard drives will start loosing data to a certain degree. The physical armature inside the drive slips and no longer aligns with the disc sectors. As we know, the data is within the sector. Error messages often alert us to this fact without an internal examination of the drive. Such as file not found. Maybe a utility is unable to locate a partition one minute and the next minute the problem no longer exsist. Same with the file not found error message. The fix is to create a new MBR, set new partitions, and reformat the drive. This configures a new geometry and the armature will function properly until slippage occurs once again. Drive fitness programs are available to analyze the hard drive state and make corrections as necessary. In any event, when a low level disk operation such as zero-fill is implimented we loose the data, yes, but we also obtain a hard drive with a longer life span. I guess that might be a benifit. Performance is obviously improved since read and write data is no longer interrupted due to the new geometry. One advantage of the zero-fill utility is related to WinME. People that upgraded to WinME from Win98 and later decided to dump ME and move back to 98. People that used a WinME boot disk to reformat and reinstall Win98 executed an uneducated error. The WinME Boot disk will perform the operation, but with errors unknow to the average user. M$ unknownly (maybe) did not inform us that the two boot disks were actually incompatible in a technical sense. The end result is a hard drive with a slightly different MBR. Basicly, the hard drive contains the MBR for WinME and the OS is Win98 in the end. Not compatible in the true sense. This phenomia is realized when users start receiving MBR errors without justification. Partition Magic 6.0 and up will correct the MBR, but it is a manual procedure. Herein lies the solution, the zero-fill utility free from the disk manufacturer. Like pcguide put it, we loose everything, but the drive is laid out in a blank state awaiting a new MBR, etc. wew

Reference exchange rate. I agree. The pound is strong and always will be IMHO. Luckily, the EURO is stronger than the US Dollar, if by only a few cents. Also shipping costs and credit card surcharges add to the final total. Those three factors (exchange rate, shipping fees, and credit card surcharges) make it more costly in the end. I have found that PayPal takes a bite out of the credit card fees. I am an Internationl PayPal Varified Member, Seller and Buyer Status. It is cheaper to run a PayPal account than to process credit cards. Something to consider when selling online internationally.

Drew, zero fill utilities are available from the hard drive manufacturer's web sites. from the PCguide.com, When most users today talk about "low-level formatting" a drive, what they are really talking about is doing a zero-fill. That procedure will restore a functional drive (that is, one that does not have mechanical problems) to the condition it was in when received from the factory. There are occasions when a modern hard disk can become so badly corrupted that the operating system cannot recover it, and a zero-fill can help in this situation. Stubborn boot sector viruses for example can be hard to eradicate without resorting to low-level intervention. Since the zero-fill cleans all programs and data off the drive it will get rid of almost any data-related problem on the drive, such as viruses, corrupted partitions and the like. Just remember that it's a bit like burning down your house to get rid of termites: you lose everything on the drive. Guide info from Seagate Click Here Seagate Download Page for Disk Wizard (formerly Disk Mgr) Disk Wizard Starter Edition I use the above zero fill utility for all major manufacturer hard drives.

FthrJack is correct. Another method is one that Norton uses. It changes the first didgit of the file name. But it has to be installed before the recovery. If you really wanted to make the contents of the hard drive impossible to recover you have to 0 Fill (zero fill) the hard drive. Magnets work good to. LS_Dragons. I'll let you know. I will converse with them tonight or tomorrow. They offer the class in Clearwater, Florida and the U.K. FthrJack, do you know anything about their courses?

What new features do you want to see on msfn?
MSNwar replied to FthrJACK's topic in General Discussion
Well, how about a web cam party once a month? Get a sponsor to provide the software and hardware to MSFN and members use their own web cams. Allow the sponsor to run two short ads. One at the introduction and one at the end? Members area only. $5 monthly fee. -
Looks like something to watch this weekend. Thanks Tris.
