It'd be nice if it was possible. If anyone knows how to do this, please post here!

This poll is not silly. Because some people will STICK to their older versions, or move to other platforms. There's a lot of love-hate regarding longhorn lately.

combining 2 unattened together
prathapml replied to funkyfella's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
hi funkyfella, welcome to the forums! you shouldn't really need to replace the txtsetup.sif - just use the old one which was working fine. Also, its better to start anew on your new disk - "editing from one to another" WILL cause problems. -
Hi nugget, glad to have you here! Welcome to MSFN forums

That's a really bad situation, Bob! The easiest thing to do now, would be to move away all required files and settings and e-mails, etc. from your C: drive to D: Then after that, use your HP recovery CD as said above, or format C: and re-install Windows XP in the normal way. Then install Service Pack 2. And then install your normal apps. All of that should take approx. one hour! Whereas, trying to find where the problem is, and so on might take many days. EDIT: oops, read your conclusion too late.

Haha.... in a "birthday dress". Nice one!

You can do that morphing and so on, but its not really of use to do it. He probably wants to raise the resolution of the video - which is easily done by your player. This topic, is something like the video equivalent of raising your 128 kbps MP3 audio file to 320 kbps. Its do-able, but ZERO gain from it - instead you might even see an adverse quality variance from the original because of the processing. Hoping this will save some of your time!

hello, and welcome to the forum Enjoy your stay!

Yes, there is. But doing it will be positively useless. It will end up grainy, and blurry, etc. Just use your media player's features to play at 2x or full-screen.

Ah, nice news. I just wanted to add that those who use this utility are on their own, as far as legality is concerned. The utility by itself does not break laws, because there's a lot of good things you can use it for. (those regular nero and winamp and mozilla releases for example) Enjoy!

That hiding of folders is atleast a start - you can safely say 50 percent of people don't even know what hidden files is and where to enable showing of it. jamesas, you know why the hidden property doesn't work when you make the ISO ? Its because you might run a series of commands from a .BAT - one of which strips file attributes. Just don't run that particular line and its fixed. Next, a more strong way of hiding folders/files is to do it with ultraiso. But even that is not unbreakable protection since once you make an ISO and view it, its clearly visible. But its one step above basic hiding. And lastly, I've been noticing that since the last few months all the "big guys" here have started becoming worried about their uA disk and have been looking for ways to protect it. Try a search and you'll see atleast 3 topics dealing with EXACTLY what you are trying to do. No perfect solution yet, though.

Total Commander 6.50 is out! , Silence please...
prathapml replied to totoymola's topic in Application Installs
For the title, you can PM me with topic link and the new name you want it to be. About the SFX, if an app won't protest then that's my preferred way because of compression, and many other reasons. (sadly msoffice wants a crapload in the registry made by its installer) Now for your problem, one thing I can say for sure is that no app I install at T-12 (cmdlines.txt) shows up any explorer windows (even the installers that normally throw up an explorer window with start menu shortcuts don't dare do it!). This could be because explorer.exe simply can't be started at that stage becvause of DLLs or whatever.... If that is not a solution, and your app installs are done at GUIrunOnce (that's when explorer.exe is NOT running), then you could just use taskkill /F /IM explorer.exeIn XP home, taskkill is not available so you can download pskill from sysinternals.com pskill explorer.exe Hoping this helps.... Do post back on what you finally decided to do. -
How can I change Administrator name before install
prathapml replied to OroS's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
To change cluster size is more complex - its best to use partition magic or something manually.... But if you do need to do something about it, check out "fsutil" - run it from a command prompt. And as for the Admin name change, the netuser.exe tool is an easy way to do it. netuser Administrator /name:NEWNAMEA search of the forum will bring up the download. -
Nforce2 Ethernet is installed as IEEE1394!?!
prathapml replied to Afterdawn's topic in Device Drivers
Well, yes I remember I said it could be deleted. My mistake, sorry! I went in and looked into what files I have kept in my driver archive and I see I have kept PreNRM. -
Programs that don't need to be installed
prathapml replied to Afterdawn's topic in Application Installs
No, that's the registry key where all paths to known executables are stored. For example, when you type "CMD" into the Run box, windows will look into that registry key to find out where cmd.exe is located. I noticed that bledd was doing something which could be simplified this way, therefore that info! -
Nforce2 Ethernet is installed as IEEE1394!?!
prathapml replied to Afterdawn's topic in Device Drivers
The IEEE1394 connection is not a worry. That's normal. You probably had it all this time and noticed only now. On my nForce2 board as well, the firewire gets detected as a network interface instead, but it works fine. The real worry is why your network drivers haven't installed. I'd hazard a guess that maybe some files from the driver set were accidentally deleted or corrupted. -
yes, that's how I know that its far easier and more useful. The method to do it, I've described above. Actually carrying it out might take 2 minutes if you were already familiar with multi-boot discs, and maybe half-an-hour to learn if you weren't familiar with it. Go ahead, give it a try! Resources for help: easyboot forum (for multi-boot - search for acronis) MSFN forum (search for "acronis" ) Freely downloadable tools, which you need: EasyBoot UltraISO good luck!

haha.... I don't know what to say! But yes, one nice thing about this forum is its quite fun. And that's because we have lots of sane and sensible people around here (such as yourself) from a range of nationalities. And the general friendliness and relaxed atmosphere that abounds, draws a lot of people as it is a refreshing change from other boards. Its sufficiently tech as it should be, and has a sufficiently sized "by the way" category of talks, with none of the spamming! Also, you reminded me of this old topic of mine - This is what differentiates MSFN from others. Oops! Noticed that you have already been there.

Just go with BartPE and spare yourself a lot of headache. The biggest plus-point being plugins for it. And the 24 hours limitation can be removed using a certain plugin for bartPE. So that's not a problem either. @DL Maybe by 'real OS' he means to say bartPE is not a full-featured OS like the real WinXP (bartpe's source) is. In fact, bartPE can be made to be more real than anyone thinks - check out the 911 CD forum. And if you were wondering what that reference to 24 hours was about, it refers to the limitation that microsoft hard-coded into WinPE. After booting from a WinPE CD (or hard-disk), your system will only run for 24 hours, after that it will forcibly restart. This was done by them to prevent winpe being used in embedded devices (like mobile phones, etc.) and such... Well, bartPE which is a variant of WinPE can remove that limitation (as I said above). go bart! EDIT: If you have doubts about the power of bartPE "full OS" check out Ultimate Boot CD for Windows or miniPE.

Bropia.A, a new MSN Messenger worm on the loose!
prathapml replied to dwergs's topic in Technology News
:fear: I've got logged in and out once. :fear: And I'm not even sure if its happening because of my ISP or this worm... :fear: EDIT: No worries! I just noticed that it uses .PIF to spread. And I have prevented precisely this sort of situation by disabling hostile file-types (associate *.PIF to text-file) so its totally harmless. -
Well, that's totally normal. At first boot, that little bit of extra time taken to login does happen for everybody. Only difference is that if you had some regtweaks added during cmdlines, the login will take a couple of seconds longer (only the *FIRST* time) because it is creating the registry and executing as per what it says, etc. What I've see is that with no regtweaks used, it takes approx 10 seconds at first login. With regtweaks used, it takes 12 seconds approx. Considering that regtweaks save a lot of mouse-cursor time , its not a problem at all.

What Mekrel said is correct. Set the settings to defaults, take snapshot 1. Now set it to how you like it, take snapshot 2. Compare. Use the changed reg keys in your .REG. Uninstalling and reinstalling is simply an easier way to guarantee that settings are back at defaults. But even then, you can't be sure of that! The only assured way is to do it on a clean install. Its a bad idea to export all and re-import all. Because some settings that you don't really need to configure do exist. These settings are kept at default, and might change with a new/different version. If you have *ALL* settings in the .REG, then those settings will no more be at default, and you might have problems. Export only the keys that changed (those which you wish to configure). good luck!

Programs that don't need to be installed
prathapml replied to Afterdawn's topic in Application Installs
That is: 1. difficult for yourself 2. not microsoft's recommended method 3. cluttering up with files. Instead, add entries for the names of programs you want to directly run, over here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths -
umm.... then let a thousand volcanoes bloom because no one will refuse diamonds, lol. Oh, and those pics are very nice. The "scenic backdrop" of those mountains and skies is worth seeing!

Its a waste of time to install it.... Much easier and helpful, would be to just install it once with the serial, then use the boot media builder to write a CD-RW. Then extract the boot-image from the CD (using ultraiso) and now you can have it as an option on your multi-boot CD. Whenever you need to use it, boot with that CD - which is what you should really be looking for (because if you've paid for that license key, why'd you want it installed on other machines where the CD is used!).
