  1. WHEW! That's a lot of confusion there.... About your steps, all I can say is do it one step at a time and test it. So that you know that the addition/removal of XYZ is the cause of problem ABC. a. Don't touch nLite until you are sure of being able to fix problems that may arise, by yourself. People get unnecessarily carried away with all the possibilities in nLite, and finally end up worrying themselves and others with questions on the forum. b. WHOA! You got the wrong impression about XPlode. Its nothing but a graphical way of doing what batch-files do. So it looks far more prettier. And what do batch-files do? Batch-files (CMD or BAT) are a series of commands executed one after another, that is all. You can use batch-files or XPlode (or any of the hundred other tools on this site) for carrying out your silent install. Now what's a silent install? Its nothing but a program's installation happening silently without bothering you to click on the "Next" button ten times! Batch-files (or XPlode) is used to string together silent installs of all the apps you want to install (so that the installation of 25 apps will quietly happen without requiring you to be present in front of the keyboard/mouse to nudge it ahead). c. Cleanup.cmd is nothing but a batch-file (set of DOS-like commands). You can call it by any other name, or use alternative methods to do the same function. And what is the function of cleanup.cmd? It clears out all the files that were copied from CD to the hard-disk for use during silent installs. That is all, it has nothing to do with the CD! 1. XPCREATE is nice, and is geared towards hot-fixes/updates for the OS. But if your focus is on tweaks/customizing/apps, then I suggest you do it yourself. All it takes is 2 days of reading around the guide and forums, and then dance happily. 2. Oh, and god will love you for using a non-Dell disk. Far too many people are having problems here with Dell CDs... something's majorly wrong with their disks. 3. Using the XPSP2 disk with XPCREATE.... maybe its possible, maybe its not, I don't know. Like I said, doing it yourself is more satisfying/thorough, plus you learn many things along the way. 4. The unattended codec-pack - this is another topic that you should rather attempt later on, when you have all the REQUIRED functions of your CD working properly. And.... I'd suggest you don't waste CD-Rs on your unattended CD project. Make ISO files, and mount it in VMware/VirtualPC for your testing.
  2. I copy over those files as well, just to be sure Below is the list of files I have as my VIA drivers: DMAOPT.DAT readme.txt vfsfd.sys viaagp1.cat VIAAGP1.INF VIAAGP1.PNF VIAAGP1.SYS VIAAGPS.reg VIAAGPV.reg VIADSK.SYS viagart.cat VIAGART.INF VIAGART.PNF VIAGART.sys VIAIDE.INF VIAIDE.PNF VIAIDE2K.DLL VIAIDEXP.INF VIAIDEXP.PNF VIAIDEXP.SYS viamach.cat VIAMACH.INF VIAMACH.PNF VIAMINI.CAT VIAPFD.SYS videfd.sys VTNIRQ.PCI
  3. It won't work, because .msc files are not executables... They are MMC console snap-ins. Try this, it should work: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\eventvwr] @="Event Viewer" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\eventvwr\command] @="mmc.exe %%SYSTEMDRIVE%%\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\eventvwr.msc"What this does is to call MMC.exe which then plugs eventvwr.msc into itself.
  4. * topic moved What is GART? In other words, think of it as the crucial link bridge between your AGP card and the main system memory.NAM and PreNRM dirs in Ethernet dir, are useless to me. Those folders are: 1. Used for nForce3/4 mobos (which have cool networking capabilities). 2. Need an installer to install manually, (it cannot install through OEMpnpDriversPath method). So yeah, nForce1 and nForce2 board owners can delete those folders safely. It depends on the situation...If you have 15 dirs to list out in winnt.sif, obviously you'd like to simplify things by consolidating all the nForce driver-files in one single folder, all the Via-Hyperion driver-files in one folder, and so on. If you'd rather want to be able to directly update your nForce drivers when a new version comes out, you'd prefer to leave in the folder-structures it uses. (that way, no need to edit your winnt.sif file again to add/remove directory names)
  5. yes, All you need to do is take the concerned OS'es drivers for all the system devices, and put it all in one folder. For example, if you're doing this for XP, take the XP folder from "AGP" driver-folder and copy out XP folder contents to some other place. Similarly for MemCtl, and so on... Doing so for my XPSP2, I find that I end up with 28 files in one folder, 345 KB. Then, point to that folder in OEMpnpDriversPath. (as the guide says) Hoping this helps....
  6. You need to have Filesystem=*in winnt.sif. This is already mentioned in the guide itself.
  7. That (sticking to SP1) would leave you seriously vulnerable. Having SP2 slip-streamed into XP and installed after a re-format, is a strategy that never fails.
  8. Get the dotNET framework from here - http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/
  9. @SiMoNsAyS eh... but discussion is what we're here for! What I mean to say is this: Let's say you RAR-SFX the *ENTIRE* AIP for acro-read7. It will end up being X MB. Let's say you UPX AcroRd32.dll, and then RAR-SFX the AIP. You will see size of archive is (X+Y) MB (that is, it is bigger this time after using UPX). That's why I say UPX is no use if you will anyway RAR a file. On the other hand, take a properly made (non-UPX'ed files inside) RAR-SFX, and try UPXing it. If the final result saves atleast 500 KB, then I'd say its useful. If it doesn't save 500 KB (or if it increases space used ), then its not really that much beneficial.... Of course, I don't mean to say that UPX or your idea is bad... I'm simply telling the situation in which it won't be useful. In most other cases, UPX is pretty good.

    XPlode4 Teaser

I was just thinking on this.... I'm subscribed to the XPlode mailing-list but no call for testers came through that for v4. Tried sending a mail on that? Hopefully more people who've subscribed will stand up and be counted?
  11. Yup, tried that. Something tells me its the manifest integrated into the EXE, to be blamed. Will removing that (using reshack) help?
  12. I don't know the switch to prevent that, since I don't use play games online with Steam. But I'd say if nothing else turns up, then you can atleast do a "taskkill" of the dialog-box that comes up, asing for reboot. That way, its all smooth and no interruptions.
  13. How many years is the warranty on that monitor? Is it still covered by it? Since something seems to be wrong here, I'd say call in the ViewSonic technicians and let them have a look at it. Atleast they can fix it for you, or replace the piece.
  14. Amen That's the simple thing to do. And I do the same too. Why complicate matters when it can be far simpler! Unbelievably simple solution for firefox installation
  15. Do you remember your security answer atleast? So that your password will be mailed to you at your secondary email address, or will be reset.
  16. For one, Remote Desktop to a Terminal Server has been around long enough to feel stable. And other powerful solutions exist too, like VNC (which has a multitude of clients/servers). And your post looks suspiciously like a commercial pitch - which is not allowed here. You're welcome to introduce freeware though.
  17. @Blam-O! a** only just means a variant of Donkey... And visitors here are expected to be mature enough to use words correctly and in decency. We'd rather spend our time in making useful content, than compile a "Top thousand list" of swear-words to block. As for whether anyone will be upgrading to longhorn.... I can bet you that in about a year's time, this site (and others) will be buzzing like mad with beta news and views and tests and tweaks and requests (for cracks) and whatnot..... Every kid worth his salt is gonna feel moronic to be left out of the excitement - and these kids will spread the positive buzz onwards to everybody else. (remember how fearful people were of XP's activation in the early days? But *STILL* everyone wanted to lay a hand on it.) I'm already on longhorn (alphas). And by the time it finally comes out, I might have upgraded a few system components already. So yeah, its a foregone conclusion. As for the upgrade required for longhorn.... you have to remember that an entire industry is looking towards longhorn to revive sagging demand for "MORE, BIGGER, FASTER" segment of hardware! Whether MS satisfiers them or not, is a moot-point at this time.
  18. It'd be a nice addition to either have all the below info on the guide itself (after giving due credit to tacktech), or link to this info from some page on the guide. Known CD labels for: Windows 2000 (all editions, Prof. and server) Server 2003 XP SP0 XP SP1 XP SP1a XP SP2
  19. Don't bother with templates... I startup reg-shot, then disable the policy (and take 1st shot). Then, enable the policy and take 2nd shot. This way, when you compare you know which registry key is actually being modified. After that, add the newly found key to your .REG and that's it, you're done.
  20. If you need a command-line to install an INF/driver forcibly, I've posted it here somewhere.... As for normal monitor drivers, its no different from any other drivers. You need the INF and the digital signature (.CAT file) for the same. And if an ICC color profile is included its a bonus. The real problem is because most manufacturers use the same INF for installing an entire product-line of monitors. So in the display properties, you'll have your monitor listed like this: SyncMaster 703(M)s/ 753(M)s/750(M)s/753(M)v, MagicSyncMaster CM173A(M) on NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440So if you edit the INF, the security catalog becomes invalid after that (due to which it won't install unattended now). Other than that, most other manufacturers don't provide signed INFs at all.
  21. Enjoy your win98se Personally, I'm more on the side of XP, but as you said.... everybody has their own favourites. And we at msfn do not flame over XP/98se, lol. Just use whatever keeps you happy. Oh, and do you play UT2004 a lot? Wanna death-match with us? (my gaming companions, I mean) Tokara Forest is a lot of fun, I think. As far as I'm concerned, I do read the whole post before replying to it (whole thread, most of the time). And most of the time, I too read and experiment before posting! Yup, lot of similarities between many of us. There are some other sites on the net though, which are mostly frequented by kids (and these kids have nothing better to do than flame and give useless answers). Thankfully, MSFN is far more mature. And were you looking for women techies? lol.... might be a long time before you run into one. Not many women go online, and even fewer of them frequent forums. Hey, about the UK flag.... I don't think anything can be done about it. Its a mod (modification/hack) to the Invision forum software, not under our control. Also, the list of countries which is already there is long enough. If more flags had to be manually added in, we'll end up with a drop-down list with thousands of region-names to choose from! And that won't be nice at all! Well, if you don't want the country flag, just choose "Not Specified" for country, and it won't be displayed anymore. Have fun!
  22. I agree with ryan. Do your RARing/7ziping, and *THEN* try a UPX on the resulting file. If you see a space-saving, well and good, put the new UPX'ed file on your CD. Otherwise, just stay on with the RAR/7zip itself.
  23. huh? It has to be named $Progs(Yes, with that symbol preceding the letters) Also, more things to check on: a. If using cdimage to make your ISO, then the option where hidden/system files are excluded. b. If using Nero instead, the option to exclude ";1" in joliet file-names.
  24. More likely than not, the chart editor (if it is a new version) is also MSI based. Try what oioldman said, or one of the switches below: /s /S /silent /QB /QN
  25. Hehe.... your topic is in the correct forum alright. But probably your very high emphasis on the "BLING" factor is scaring away answers Let's hope you get more responses!
