  13. Pop the Champaign, its time to celebrate! The Windows operating system has turned 22. That's right, considering the fact that Windows 1.0 was made available on November 20, 1985, the platform is 22 years old this week. The event passed almost unnoticed, and certainly the Redmond company failed to linger on the past. With every effort poured into pushing Windows Vista into the foreground, Microsoft simply left the 22nd anniversary of Windows slip by unnoticed. The fact of the matter is that there is no Champaign to pop. "Windows provides unprecedented power to users today and a foundation for hardware and software advancements of the next few years. It is unique software designed for the serious PC user, who places high value on the productivity that a personal computer can bring", these are the words of Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft, marking the release of Windows 1.0. By 1985, Microsoft has already moved out of Albuquerque, New Mexico and into Bellevue, Washington, and was now extending the DOS operating system with the "Windows operating environment". Windows 1.0 came to the table with a price tag of $99 and signaled the birth of the user interface delivering such programs as Windows Write and Windows Paint. 22 years later, Windows Vista is a barely manageable mammoth release, and Microsoft assured of its commitment to produce Windows 7, currently planned for 2010. Vista shipped to businesses in November 2006 and to the general consumers in January 2007. One year after the latest Windows client was released to manufacturing, and 22 years after Windows 1.0, Microsoft sold over 88 million copies of Vista, and is looking to achieve the 1 billion install base with Windows by mid 2008. Now, that will be a real reason to celebrate, although it will be somewhat synonymous with Bill Gates stepping down from his day-to-day role at Microsoft. Source: Softpedia

  16. Run Registry Editor and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList If the SpecialAccounts and UserList keys don't exist, create them. Create a DWORD Value and named extact to <user name> you want to suppress. Leave its data set to 0. Reboot. Now that user name will not appear on the Welcome screen - to log in with that account you'll press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice at the Welcome screen and enter the username/password. I *think* it will also not show up in the Run As dialog. I have not tried yet ! But I hope it'll............. Thanks for your Restrict individual users with group policy! Tutorial ! AWESOME

  19. With Windows Vista far from being the last mammoth release of the Windows operating system as we know it, Microsoft is increasingly focusing on Windows 7. Stripped down of its Vienna codename, following the development strategy implemented by Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, debuted with the introduction of product numbers, Windows 7 is currently set for 2010, in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors. At the same time, there are generally only scarce details related to Windows 7 available, most of which do not benefit from any official confirmation from Microsoft. But one aspect of the operating system, that the Redmond company will evolve, concerns the ecosystem of programs and applications built on top of the platform. In this context, Windows 7 could be synonymous with an overhaul of how the Windows client handles the deployment, configuration and management of third-party software products integrated into its fabric in an effort to improve installation, stability, performance etc. Well, according to the Windows Survey on Deploying and Configuring Applications, Microsoft is quite interested in the impact of the User Account Control on the development, installation and configuring of applications. While it is highly unlikely that the company is considering dropping UAC, the security mitigation could be tweaked as a consequence of the feedback received. But at the same time, Microsoft is pointing to a simpler installation experience that does not by any means require elevation of privileges. Microsoft is also questioning developers in relation to the diagnostics and troubleshooting process of application failures, as well as extensive repair options, complete uninstall and a separation of the program from Windows in order to avoid conflicts and errors impacting the operating system. Still, by the repetition of the topic involving the lack of administrative privileges for future applications for Windows 7 it appears that the UAC is here to stay. Source: Softpedia
  20. Windows Vista has had everything but an easy ride since it hit the shelves in January 2007. The operating system was plagued by a luxuriant variety of problems from hardware and software incompatibilities to lack of support and poor performance and reliability. And in this context, Vista has also taken the users out for a ride, making every speed bump count, as Microsoft was applauding the evolved user experience delivered by its latest Windows client. Well, one of the most overlooked aspects among the vast volume of problems associated with Vista are the issues faced by end users when attempting to activate the operating system. "Activation, also known as Microsoft Product Activation or Windows Product Activation, is an anti-piracy technology designed to verify that Microsoft software products are legitimately licensed. Activation works by verifying that the product key—the 25-character code located on your Certificate of Authenticity (usually affixed to your computer) or proof of license label (usually affixed to the installation disc case)—is authentic and is not in use on more personal computers than are permitted by the software license", reads a fragment of the Windows Vista Activation FAQ. Activation is by no means a silver bullet solution designed to solve the piracy phenomenon, and as a matter of fact, it has been bypassed on both Windows XP and Windows Vista. But Microsoft continues to put end users through the pains of the activation process. And when you will see the extensive list of Windows Vista activation errors supplied by the Redmond company you will understand the use of the term "pain". As the vast majority of users acquire Vista preloaded on an original equipment manufacturer machine, in November, Microsoft published a Knowledge Base Article 942962 referring to error messages that come as a consequence of attempting to activate Vista on an OEM computer. There are a total of three errors presented to the user: "Error Code: Invalid Volume License Key - In order to activate, you need to change your product key to a valid Multiple Activation Key (MAK) or Retail key. You must have a qualifying operating system license AND a Volume license Windows Vista upgrade license, or a full license for Windows Vista through an OEM or from a retail source . ANY OTHER INSTALLATION OF THIS SOFTWARE IS IN VIOLATION OF YOUR AGREEMENT AND APPLICABLE COPYRIGHT LAW," as well as "Error Code: 0xC004F059 - Description: The Software Licensing Service reported that a license in the computer BIOS is invalid", and "Error Code: 0xc004f035 - The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated with a Volume license product key. Volume licensed systems require upgrading from a qualified operating system. Please contact your system administrator or use a different type of key." KB 942962 can be found via this link. But as far as end users as concerned, Microsoft gives a more complete view over the activation errors presented by its latest operating system in KB 931276. And corporate users are not spared. Volume Activation error codes on Windows Vista-based computers delivered through KB 938450 is nothing short of an encyclopedia of messages. Source: Softpedia
