I am using Microsoft Word 2007.... When you right click on document file holding <SHIFT KEY>....You will get Open as Read Only option... I am not 100% sure....but may be this feature in Microsoft Word 2003. If not then I am posting some registry code, copy it to notepad and save as <Filename>.reg file and patch it.
