  8. [Tutorial] Add custom color scheme in Personalize → Windows color and appearance. Hi friends Today, I have found some interesting aspects about Windows Aero enabled glass colorization. Windows Vista provides some set of color schemes, which can be used to change color of windows, the start menu and the taskbar by picking one of the available color schemes. You can also create, or set your own color using color mixer. I have discovered a way to add our own custom color scheme in pre-defined color schemes… Now a question raises….HOW. Do not worry! Let me explain…. REQUIRES: · Restorator (Download 30 Day Trial) · Registry Editor (Type regedit in start search or in Run dialog box and hit enter) · Image Editing Software (I prefer, Adobe Photoshop) HOW TO: 1.) Run Restorator and open themecpl.dll (located under C:\Winodows\System32) and navigate to BITMAP. Now extract any bitmap file from 1 to 8. 2.) Run Photoshop and change colors by adjusting hue/saturation Open the extracted bitmap image in Photoshop and click on Image→Adjustments→Hue/Sturation or press CTRL+U Adjust or change color as you want and save n exit. 3.) Now once again run Restorator and open themecpl.dll and click on Resources → Add Resources or Press CTRL+U. Select Bitmap in resource type and type name of resource 103 or whatever you want n click on OK. Now select the bitmap file, drag, and drop at highlighted area. Save themecpl.dll and exit. Windows Registry's magic starts… now. 4.) Run Registry Editor and Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\Glass Colorization\Swatches Create a key with a GUID name…..it must be unique among all GUIDs existing under Swatches (Simple trick: Copy any GUID like {FD81078C-1B36-4595-A92E-91F05C4FA5DC} and change one of the character or digit... I am sure; it will be 99.99 % unique. The new GUID is {FD81078C-1B36-4595-A92E-91F05C4FA5DD}) 5.) Create a DOWRD (32-bit) value and named to Color. Set the value of color, which you want. (Simple trick: Right Click on desktop and navigate Personalize → Windows color and appearance, now set your favorite color using color mixer. Run Registry Editor and navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM and click on ColorizationColor n copy its value and paste in Color DWORD value.) 6.) Create a DWORD (32-bit) value and named NameId. Set the value to 69 in decimal. This registry value reads string from themecpl.dll.mui file located under C:\Windows\System32\en-US. The 69 String ID in themecpl.dll.mui contains string value Vistas. 7.) Create a DWORD (32-bit) value and named PreviewId. Set the value to 103 (The ID or name of bitmap resource file that has been added to themecpl.dll.) 8.) Create a DWORD (32-bit) value and named PreviewOrder. Set the value to 9; which tell the color scheme added at 9th number. 9.) Create a Expandable String value (REG_EXPAND_SZ) and named Resource. Set the value to themecpl.dll. 23. Microsoft extends software support to 10 years Additional five years of maintenance intended to reassure enterprise software customer base Taking a page from major enterprise software providers like Oracle and SAP, Microsoft announced this week Business Ready Customer Care, an initiative that includes major enhancements to its maintenance and support program for Microsoft Dynamics, ERP and CRM, applications. The customer support initiative does three things: Extends for five years the time over which Microsoft will support its products; offers more creative financing solutions for buying its CRM and ERP products, and promises to create a more transparent environment for its channel partners and their customers about future upgrades and products. Industry analyst Josh Greenbaum, principal at Enterprise Applications Consulting, said the fact that Microsoft is offering an additional five years of software support is in recognition of how well Oracle's extended support program is working for its customer base. Under the new Microsoft program there will be a total of five years of "mainstream" support for its products plus an additional five years of extended support, according to Christine Bell, director of global services product management, for Microsoft Business Solutions. Greenbaum says the extended support is a smart move on Microsoft's part. "Oracle found out that extending support for their applications does not mean customers are gong to stall on [buying] new releases. They [Oracle] have a good upgrade flow despite or maybe because of extended support," Greenbaum said. In today's market, most vendors make upgrades a revenue-neutral event. "You still get maintenance revenue either way, so why cause anxiety when you don't have to," added Greenbaum. On the financing side, Microsoft is now offering more options, including financing both the cost of hardware and software. Also available through March 2008 is a program called Smart Pay which will allow customers to select what their monthly payments will be for the first year. Finally, Bell said that Microsoft is making the commitment to deliver statements of directions that look out to the next 12 to 14 months. "It will be very specific and talk about features and functionality," said Bell. Microsoft will include written documents on a special partner and customer Web site and will not require signing a non-disclosure agreement. The roadmap details are expected to start in November. 24. Seagate to pay refund over gigabyte definition Seagate Technology, the world's largest hard-drive maker, is offering customers a five percent refund on drives bought during the last six years following a lawsuit over the definition of a "gigabyte". As an alternative, customers can choose to receive free backup software. Four people sued the company, saying they expected its drives to offer greater capacity than that actually provided. Seagate manufactures its drives based on powers of ten, with 1KB equalling 1,000 bytes. The claimants argued that 1KB of storage should compromise 1,024 bytes. On a 1GB drive, this would make the difference between one billion bytes of storage, and 1,073,741,824 bytes. Other manufacturers, such as Samsung and Hitachi, also measure hard-drive capacity with 1KB equalling 1,000 bytes, whereas all operating systems are based on 1KB equalling 1,024 bytes. Because the lawsuit is a "class action", the settlement is available to all Seagate customers. Seagate denies any fault, but it has offered to pay the refund for any drive which was bought between 22 March, 2001 and 26 September, 2007. The offer is awaiting approval by the presiding judge. To claim a refund, buyers have to fill in a form quoting their product's serial number. If they wish to claim the software, they have to use a different online form. The lawsuit is the latest in a series of similar cases involving the definition of a gigabyte. In 2003, Apple, Dell, Gateway, HP, IBM, Sharp, Sony and Toshiba were sued over hard-disk sizes by a group of users. That case has not yet been resolved. A suit against Amazon.com over the capacity of an MP3 player bought on the site was also filed in 2003, but was dismissed in 2005. All the major flash memory card makers, including SanDisk and Kingston, were sued in 2004, but there has been no result in that case yet. Another hard-disk giant, Western Digital, settled a similar suit in 2005, but it escaped having to pay refunds. The company offered a free download of backup software valued at US$30 and paid half a million dollars in legal fees, while denying liability. Source: builderau.com
