  1. It is recommended that u defrag ur hard drive often even every couple of weeks!!!, but a fragmented systems performance really suffers when a machine's paging file is fragmented, this would effect more then just the problem u are having at the moment. Large drives especially particianed drives can have problems access the paging files, depending on the amount of available free space on each of the particians. For example if C: is ur main drive and u are wishing to save a file on D: ........it may take some time for ur O/S on C: to access the D: as some of ur files may have become fragmented, which occurs on all hard drives when u are constantly access files. Do an disk defrag analysis and see what ur results are, but I dont think that ur problem will not be fixed by simply defragging ur drives but it may help!!!!!:blueteam

    Registy Error

U need to give us more info as to what it is that is corrupt, but u can try and repair xp using the boot disks or if u have a bootable copy of xp. If its a message like this: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WindowsSystem32ConfigSystem.ced"? check ur System registry hive......as it can cause problems if it is missing or corrupt and can be repaired by running the repair function of xp
  3. Sad to hear the news, didnt get to know u as well as I hoped, hope ur still around in some way or another thanks for all the help that u have given me
  4. U can change the drive letters by going control panel/Computer management/....storage/disk management which will show u all u hard drives/particians/cd roms.....(put a disk in each of ur cd drives cause they wont show up, doesnt matter what disks as long as there is something on it). To change the drive letter click the one u want to change and then right click on it and u will see (change drive letter and path) eg. cd drive (D) right click/change drive letter and path/change... then change the drive letter to (G).....because u will need to shift them back to make the drive letter (D) available so u can then do the same to ur second hard drive (F) and change it to (D)...and so on and so on depending on how u want ur cd drives
  5. Its up to u which u set as ur master personally I would use the larger one as my master cause I would do the majority of my work on it. My boot loader timeout is set to (0) cause I dont need it to display the operating systems choice at boot up....I have xp on my master drive set as default and W2K on the slave, if I want to access my second drive on boot up I hit the F8 key on boot u can fix this by checking ur settings contol panel/system/advanced....../startup and recovery/settings Yep to ur last question, if u look at the text file below u will see that rdisk(1)in the second one has the (1) which indicates the second drive.....the number that follows indicates which is which:cool: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS multi(0)disk(0)[b:429642369c]rdisk(1)[/b:429642369c]partition(1)WINDOWS
  6. Okay what u wont to do is once u connect ur second hard drive, check u cmos to make sure that it is set as slave(if not change the jumpers on the drive). Then go into ur first xp installation and go contol panel/system/advanced....../startup and recovery/settings/edit and insert the text file shown below (in red)into ur boot.ini so that it should look similar to this [boot loader] timeout=0 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect[/color:377cf70714] save the file and u can verify its path by going start/run/msconfig...once u get the system config utility choose boot.ini/check all paths I find this easier then editing the boot.ini in dos:D
  7. Yeh but I think thats the point of it all, companies like M$ want the public to go out and buy their products...so u can have the latest versions of them. The computer industry is continually churning out faster/smaller components. So for software manufactures to keep up with the latest puters they need to build software that is built around and can keep up with the constant speed changes!!!. 2 years ago u would have laughed at the idea of a 2gig speed system, and in 6mths it will not be the fastest available. Look at games for example...to play the latest good quality games u need a system that has to be a certain speed/has x amount of ram/can support 3d acceleration and a hard drive that has x amount of available space Puters arent as expensive as they used to be and u can pick up most components at good prices, companies relize us suckers will want to keep up and have downed the prices so that we can....so we buy more and want more....man my first hard drive was only 540mg and now I run 2.....40gig/20gig and back in those days parts were expensive hard drives these days are cheap in comparison I recently went out and upped my system from a P3 800mhz (which I thought was mad for a couple of years) to a P4 1.6gig which I know will keep my satisfied for a good number of years, but eventually I will need to up certain parts of it to keep up..... Welcome to the future my friend.......and its all about technology and profit gone are the days of gaming with floppies!!!!! and Im loving it:D

  10. Nice site thanks for the link:cool:
  11. First of all are u trying to dual boot?? And I assume this is a copy of the corp version, cause it might be corrupt and ur going to have to get another copy It means that it cant find the boot sector This is a core file which must be in the root directory, and that fact that it cannot find it may mean other files are also missing, u can try to fix this problem by performing the following: Boot the system with a DOS bootable floppy disk In the i386 directory of the CD-ROM there will be a file NTLDR._, which is the compressed version of NTLDR. You can expand this file using expand.exe that comes with DOS and Windows for Workgroups expand d:i386ntldr._ c:ntldr.(assuming that D:/ is ur cd rom) if all else fails have u tried to install from windows, u can try and do a full install there(proberly wont make a diff cause ur copy is proberly corrupt)

  19. Running dual boot of xp and W2K no probs got that ntdetect.exe prob , but u gotta change the boot.ini so that it can find W2K on bootup I have 2 hard drives, but have partitioned my C: drive into 2 drives C: and E:..... and the 2nd drive is D: running xp on c drive and W2K on D: so my boot.ini looks like this [boot loader] timeout=0 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect had to config the W2k boot so it could be found on bootup to change just go control panel/system/advanced /startup and recovery/settings and edit it and save make sure u always have a backup copy of ur boot.ini

    Games in XP?

Running all my games on NTFS W2K as my video card pukes in xp, Ive had absolutly no probs and I think my games run better on the NTFS file system, went with NTFS over fat32 cause running dual boot with xp and it allows me access all my files on all drives [b:2ca200cfef]Currently running:[/b:2ca200cfef] Red Faction Return to Castle Wolfenstein Madden 2002 GrandPrix 3 LS links 2001 Voyager Elite Forces Qauke 3 Swat 3 Soldier Of Fortune
  21. go to ht*p://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=33291&area=top&ordinal=35 and download the xp boot disk file....once downloaded double click on the file to run and it will prompt u install it on to 6 floppy disks u then need to reboot ur computer and boot the floppys from dos make sure that ur cmos is set so that the first boot device is from floppy disk insert the disk from 1 to 6 and it will take u to the xp installation guide choose repair xp
  22. You need to install a program like Partician Magic 7 so that u can partician (split) ur hard drive into 2 seperate drives .....one with the windows xp installation (if u want to keep it) and the other so that u can install win 98 on. PM7 will allow u to convert the second drive into FAT32 file system so that u can install win 98.....u will need to do this from dos as xp will not allow u to install an older operating system in windows. So if ur installing from a bootable win 98 disk or from the back up disks u can then choose where u want to install win 98 (eg. D:/ drive) once win 98 is installed u will need to config which is ur default bootup either xp or 98 check the links section of this forum for any links to find PM7 or if any other members can give u a link
