  1. try copying directly from the flash card to the pc, if you can. without more info i cant really give any other advice.
  2. your welcome. ^_^i have also had a hugh number of problems with sp2, so for now i stick with sp1 on my desktop.
  3. Yeah, the point was to remove the annoying-ness for legal copys of windows, but there is always the possablity that it could be used for the wrong resions. btw, did you try changeing your home page? (stupid question)
  4. he has already done that. and it worked exactly like it should. im only saying to edit the hosts file as a diagnostic measure to see if that bypasses the problem. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&sho...ndpost&p=514250 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&sho...ndpost&p=514261
  5. I could try modifiying those directions to work with my laptop, but would the WGA tool and windows update still say the key is invalid?
  6. Im sorry, please delete the topic. <-- nevermind
  7. umm, no, actaully i have a windows xp pro original cd, box, book, etc, that i got from newegg.com. but thank you...
  8. Windows update has installed something knows as Windows Genuine Advantage Valadation Tool. it has caused many people alot of problems. i keep getting asked how to remove it, so im going to copy and paste my post from my forums. Link and content removed. See below. --Zxian
  9. the exact hp cd that came with the laptop. and yes, its an oem cd, and an oem key.
  10. just make a new line and add 192.193.226.190 www.citibank.com you will have to close all browser windows for the change to take effect. make sure the file is called "hosts" not "hosts.sam" if it is hosts.sam then do this open notepad copy and paste: 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.193.226.190 www.citibank.com click file, save as... type (with quotes) in the file name area: "c:\windows\hosts" and then do it again for "c:\windows\system\hosts"
  11. you can try this: http://webaccelerator.google.com/ it seemed to help my dialup connection. (just remember that with this all your traffic is going through google.)
  12. I have a hp laptop [hp compaq nx9010] i just reinstalled windows on it. i used the original xp cd, and the serial number on the sticker on the bottem. however, when i try to activate windows it says the key is invalid. why would this be happening? i called MS and they were less then helpfull "you must be typeing it wrong", "maybe you have the wrong windows cd.." etc
  13. true, but if it thinks there is .000001% chance you have a copyed os it turns xp in to nag-ware
  14. you might want to change your citibank password, and make sure you look for any unauthorized charges. i dont think he is remotely messing with you, but better safe then sorry. one more thing you might want to try is looking in c:\windows\options\cabs\ for the windows install files.
  15. you can access the site through a proxy, the resion you cant sign is is probly because the proxy doesnt support ssl (encryption). yes, he could have caused it remotely, but i doubt it. (a remote control program like realvnc or something could have been installed easly.) if you have the windows 98 cd i would do a upgrade install from inside windows. put the cd in and install windows normally while windows is already running, it will leave all your stuff intact but will restore any windows files with the original copy.
  16. very odd. unfortunatly you cant tell from that if its working or not, but it did show an ip address right next to the url, so it doesnt seem to be a dns problem.are you useing the newest version of firefox? (click help, about firefox...) should be 1.5.0.3. if not, try upgradeing: http://www.mozilla.com like someone else said, its not your computer thats at fault. (well, it is, but its not a problem caused by windows 98 or your hardware, meaning it can be fixed without replaceing anything)
  17. they were not asking you to type the in IE or firefox click start, run, type command in the box that pops up type ping www.citibank.com after that type ping 192.193.217.120 then post your results. (the ping should fail with a "request timed out") screenshot: it says request timed out because citibank has blocked pings, but the fact that it shows the site's ip means it can find it.\ (and i know it says windows xp, but it will work the same in windows 98)
  18. In a normal workgroup enviroment windows will always ask for authitencation, if:1. there are no shared resources with "everyone" on the access control list 2. simple file shareing must be disabled. 3. the shared documents folder must be disabled (aka, not shared... or at least not allow access to "everyone") 4. and the loged in account on the accessing computer cannot have the same username/password as any account on the computer with the resource your trying to access. i might have missed something, if that doesnt work reply back.
  19. My network connections folder shows no icons, windows firewall appears to be disabled. this happend when MS installed the WGA nag-ware [http://zealforum.myvnc.com/index.php?showtopic=629] and before i removed it. the network connections folder says the service may be stoped, but its shown as running in the services list. any ideas?
  20. ive checked some of them, but most of them are just a few INFs that are xp only. or exe installers that wont run on 98
  21. Thats a standard dialog added in sp2 i beleve. however (for me at least) it seems to only work at random...
  22. sounds like corrupt file system. if not, you should make sure that you have write access to the files (if they are on ntfs media)
  23. Im assumeing the lastest version will, although maybe i was reading the page wrong...
  24. my name is Sean Connolly
