  1. if you have the serial number from the upgrade cd you bought you can just put the new number in your old install of windows. this will allow you to install service packs and pass windows validation. (this might not work however because its an upgrade serial...but its worth a try before you spend money on a new cd) this program should allow you to change it, just click the "options" menu, and click "change windows key" if that doesnt work, then... http://www.petri.co.il/change_the_serial_in_windows_xp.htm
  2. alright, im done with the browseui.dll file.. read my PM for a download link replace it by booting into real dos mode and copying the the new file over the old one in c:\windows\system\
  3. no, its a problem that has to do with the software. i called linksys and they confirmed that. plus the router is about 15 feet from the PC. >_< (5/5 bars on linksys software. nothing i said in my original post indacates a signal problem) installing McAfee software... i will edit this post when i see how it works, i will need to reboot... didnt work, my network showed up in the list, but when i tryed to connect it said "failed to connect"... so im stuck useing the linksys software that will only allow me to connect on channel 6 >_<
  4. if you search google for the dll file name you will probly find a site to download it from. if you can give me a list of dlls that you need i can email them to you, or provide you a place to download them from. http://www.dll-files.com/ and of course www.google.com
  5. ive only installed from an upgrade cd once, and it asked for proof of another os. i beleve it was a me upgrade. i have heard though that windows 98 doesnt ask. lol, windows 98 (not se) also allowed you to enter all x's as a serial number. (they eventaully fixed it, but alot of cds were made like that)
  6. heh, its already windows 98se with the service pack ^_^ should that have fixed this?
  7. i have a linksys wifi card on my windows 98 computer. the software that came with the linksys card wont allow me to connect to my network. i called linksys and they refered me to some 3rd party connection client (boingo) i can connect with it, but its a pain in the arse. i get dissconnected alot, the client trys to renew my ip (giving me another one and makeing it difficalt to run a server (router doesnt support static ips, or reserving ips) anyways, i was told by chozo4 that there is some way to set wifi options (ssid, chan, etc) with the windows 98 networking control panel. he said i may need a reg file to allow me to set those options. i tryed asking him about it, but he goes for days at a time it seems without checking in with the outside world lol anyways, basicly im asking if there is a way to use windows' network control panel, (or another client) to connect to my network. oh, and dont buy linksys crap
  8. idk if this is still an issue, but i had the same router and found a pcmcia card in it. i did what chozo said to do, and it worked fine. did drop some packets once in a while, but nothing major. kinda wierd how they had a normal lan router and put a pc card in it to make it a wifi router.
  9. normally i wouldnt blame it on the OS, but ive had a half a dozen wierd problems... and when i tryed the ess site was down... thank you tho
  10. Heh, this is the cheep PCI sound card. >_< i guess get another one? or try to find diffrent drivers? im a hugh windows 98 fan, but these wierd problems are makeing me think about win2k...
  11. i have an ESS Allegro es1989s sound card. it plays sound, but i have a problem. in the volume panel the master volume slider stays all the way down. i can move it to the top, but then it just goes back down by its self. any ideas? im thinking its a driver issue of some kind, but i cant find any place to find drivers other then driverguide (and this is the only one they have for it) any ideas?
  12. ive solved the problem... just getting used to windows 98 again! lol
  13. normally thats what i would do, but this is the msn internet setup wizard, not the normal internet connection wizard. my only option is to connect with a dial up modem. (it forces me into the modem install wizard, and i dont have a modem) it wont let me select the LAN adaptor or wifi adaptor... [edit] i thought about it for a second and remembered the real internet connection wizard has an option for an LAN connection. i looked through the start menu and found it. i feel kinda stupid now for not thinking of this sooner... well, thanks for your help ^_^
  14. ive got a really stupid problem with windows 98se [sp 2.1a] i just installed it, ive got everything working. im posting from it in firefox now. when i try to open internet explorer to use windows updates i get a msn internet setup screen. and nothing i can think of will let me access the internet from IE. i know this is a noob problem, but i dont remember ever dealing with this on any win98 install before. thanks!
  15. Sadly, im running windows xp sp2, but i seem to be safe with firefox and norton http://zealnet.myvnc.com/public/~jz/norton.png IE 6 got farther, but was also stoped by norton. http://zealnet.myvnc.com/public/~jz/ie.png
