  1. Got back this morning with a Compaq CPU, keyboard and mouse. Hooked it up this afternoon; I had a small snag installing Telnor's DSL program, but in the end I finally connected and accessed both my Citbank and Hotmail accounts immediately! Windows XP. Seems to be working well so far. Ah, yes! Another one bites the dust......... But thanks for waking me up for a week or so Steerforth
  2. The only guy I know has a laptop with a satellite connection, but he's vacationing now. I'll talk to him when he returns. But......everything is working well. Yesterday, I changed the proxy server in IE Options to the one that was automatically operating with the Hide IP program. Now, everything works without activating the program! I may not even buy another CPU for the time being. Telnor has the market for telecommunications in Mexico. Even if I went to one of the other ISP's, their system would run through Telnor, so I don't know if it would make a difference. Somebody said it might be the software installed, and I tend to agree. This thing has been screwy since I bought it last December. I'm not that knowledgable, but I think the system was pieced together. I believe it's a hybrid of Windows XP with Windows 98 installed. The case has Windows ME stamped on the side, but I get plenty of references to Windows XP. Don't know if this makes sense. I'll be away for a few days, now. See you all later, and thanks very much for all your help. You're a great group! Steerforth
  3. I'm betting that it will, but I'll defer to your wisdom if it doesn't. Why would it be okay one day and not the next? I suggest that it's bugs in the system. I've lived here for over five years with Internet and have never had problems such as this one before. I bought this junker after my laptop had been stolen. It only cost me $100.00 for the entire system. After the local guy set it up for me, I noticed that it only had 1 gb of hard drive, so I sent it back to him for an upgrade. to 40 gb. Another thing about this system is that it only has 55 MB RAM. I'll let you know what happens one way or another! Steerforth
  4. Yes and no. I logged on this morning and was able to access Hotmail right away *without* the Hide IP program. But I had to activate it to access Citibank. It's a three day trial, which ends tomorrow, then I have to pay $35.00 if I want to keep it. But there's no use in throwing good money after bad; I'm just going to buy a new CPU when I go to San Diego later this week. Thanks for all your help, Petr. Steerforth
  5. You feel frustrated? I'm ready to throw this thing in the ocean!! I ran the Crap Cleaner and Trend Micro, and everything seems to be okay for the present. I appear to be able to access all websites. But stay tuned........ I did this.... Start - Run - Command - tracert www.citibank.com I also ran it for my sign-in page. Same results for both (30 hops) 1. * * * Request Timed Out 2. * * * Request Timed Out And so forth, thirty times. Steerforth
  6. Petr, I have done ALL the traceroutes from *my* PC; it's the only one I have!! I've only been to the Internet cafe to check my bank account. I've followed your instructions explicitly! Now, I have another problem.... Last night, everything seemed to be okay. I downloaded Adobe to read a .pdf file. This morning when I booted up, my desktop had been re-sized (this has happened frequently) and now I'm unable to access my account at hotmail.com. I get the sign-in page, but after I enter my user name and password, I get a hotmail page that says "your browser may not support hotmail". I can go no further and cannot read my mail. I can access my account at Citibank, now, but not Hotmail. Did I say, "jerry-built"? I'm going to uninstall Adobe and run the cleaner and a virus scan. A few more days, and I'll have a new processor after I cross the border. Steerforth
  7. Yes, I did the traceroutes from my PC, but I'm not surprised that there is some confusion. I think this system was jerry-built. Steerforth
  8. Posts 34 and 38 are traceroute results. Appears to be ok, but it's very slow. Steerforth
  9. Re: Mercury 22s post: Now this worked, although I didn't use the cleaner as I have been using another cleaning program all week, which didn't help. It appears as if I have to keep changing the proxy (right click on icon in lower right hand corner) until I find one that will work. I accessed my account balances and activity, but the page never seems to be complete (no images, just the information) and it's working very slowly. I was using Trendmicro as a virus scan. No firewall, though. But thanks very much! I'll have to see if this works again. Steerforth

  11. I had trouble replicating the previous traceroute last night using www.citibank.com and IE. This is using Firefox and the address, http://www.citibank.com/us/d.htm, which would be my sign-in page, I think. Unix? Foreign language, but it's in my PC when I run a "Find Files". Is it a driver? traceroute to red-corp-201.143.50.203.telnor.net (201.143.50.203): 3-30 hops, 38 byte packets 3 rtr-dmz1-ger.slac.stanford.edu (134.79.135.15) 0.397 ms (ttl=253) 4 192.68.191.146 (192.68.191.146) 0.370 ms (ttl=251!) 5 slacmr1-slacrt4.es.net (134.55.209.93) 0.373 ms (ttl=251) 6 snv2mr1-slacmr1.es.net (134.55.217.2) 0.765 ms (ttl=250) 7 snv1mr1-snv2mr1.es.net (134.55.217.5) 0.877 ms (ttl=249) 8 snvcr1-snv1mr1.es.net (134.55.218.21) 0.820 ms (ttl=247!) 9 paix-pa-snv.es.net (134.55.208.205) 2.03 ms (ttl=246!) 10 209.245.146.145 (209.245.146.145) 1.18 ms (ttl=246) 11 so-7-2-0.bbr1.SanJose1.Level3.net (4.68.125.145) 2.78 ms (ttl=244!) 12 ae-14-55.car4.SanJose1.Level3.net (4.68.123.142) 3.40 ms (ttl=244) 13 te-4-4.wch010.sntcca1.Level3.net (4.68.110.26) 2.39 ms (ttl=243) 14 64.200.249.141 (64.200.249.141) 18.0 ms (ttl=242) 15 64.200.249.121 (64.200.249.121) 15.5 ms (ttl=241) 16 anhmca1wcx2-pos14-0.wcg.net (64.200.140.49) 14.4 ms (ttl=242!) 17 anhmca1wcx4-pos6-0.wcg.net (64.200.141.94) 14.3 ms (ttl=241!) 18 telmex-anhmca1wcx4-pos-10-0-wcg.net (64.200.224.150) 17.9 ms (ttl=240!) 19 red-corp-200.76.250.2.telnor.net (200.76.250.2) 17.8 ms (ttl=241!) 20 red-corp-200.76.240.74.telnor.net (200.76.240.74) 20.7 ms (ttl=240!) 21 red-corp-200.76.250.69.telnor.net (200.76.250.69) 21.1 ms (ttl=239!) 22 red-corp-201.143.50.203.telnor.net (201.143.50.203) 39.0 ms (ttl=111!)

  13. Thanks, but I wouldn't know where to begin. This is like a foreign language. I've located the hosts file, but there's no contingency for adding anything. It's Greek to me! Steerforth
  14. I'm there, but I don't think I want to uncheck everything. I know you say that it's safe, but it seems to me if I uncheck tango manager for my DSL connection , I won't be able to reconnect to the Internet. I've crashed computers in the past by doing stupid stuff! I'm in Mexico, and this is my link to the outside world! As far as the Internet cafe goes, it's a small town, and I know the folks who own it. I've never heard of any problems. I'm just going to buy a new one - or a CPU next week when I cross the border. Steerforth
  15. Unfortunately, I don't have the Windows 98 disk, and it doesn't make any sense to buy one at this stage. I'm just going to buy another PC. I'm just concerned about security (and my money!). I keep checking my bank balances at the ATM nearby, and also I can access my account at the Internet cafe, which isn't too far away. Everything is normal so far. Steerforth
