I read somewhere there is a limit in windows 98 that limits the number of tcp/ip connections to 100. is that true? and if so is there a way around it? i searched msfn for a topic on it and couldnt find one...

I recently tryed to get my 250 gb sata drive to work on my computer, and as a resalt had everything start running in 16bit mode... ive disabled my sata controler, reinstalled the drivers for my ide controler, uninstalled the controlers from device manager... nothing i can think of to try will fix it. the only other time ive had a problem like this was on a reall old system with a isa ide controler that i swaped out to fix it. i cant do that with the mainboard's built in controler what should i do to fix it? edit fixed, now i just need to test to see if the 48lba esdi_506.pdr file works...

Enable48BitLBA | Break the 137Gb barrier!
janus zeal replied to LLXX's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I installed the esdi_506.pdr patched file [4.10.2222] then restarted my computer to connect my 250 GB sata drive. I started to boot windows and got a BSOD: so now my IDE controlers are stuck in 16 bit compatiblity mode. i restored the original esdi_506 file, i disabled my sata controler. is there something i need to do to make my sata drive work correctly? ok, fixed all my 16 bit issues. now i have a question.. my sata disk doesnt even use the esdi_506.pdr driver. instead it uses a VIA driver that came on my mainboard cd. am i still effected by the 137 GB limit? -
Thanks. i dont know why i didnt try that. ^_^;

Oh wait, are you saying that the transparent proxy would attempt to cache all of the p2p traffic? i dont know, thats what im asking. i might just set it to be manual just to be safe. i dont know if it will only sent http traffic through the cache, thats why i was worried about it being slow.oh, and thanks. ^_^ ---edit--- someone at the SmoothWall forums answered. the squid cache only sends http traffic through, so it wont effect uTorrent. ^_^

Its awesome. a hugh improvement over my netgear rangemax router (latency, transfer speed. no more droped connections).lots of features, easy to set up. etc. here is my setup: roadrunner voip modem [20 mbps] --> smoothwall router --> dlink switch --> asus 802.11g ap / computers smoothwall specs: VIA mini itx mainboard with intagrated 800 MHz cpu, 256 MB DDR ram, 80 gb hdd... i think i will just set up squid to run on port 800 and manually set up the proxy on the computers, that way p2p traffic doesnt go through the cache...

I have a SmoothWall gateway on my network that all of my computers go through. i want to use the built-in Squid cacheing proxy to cache pages, but ive read that it will effect p2p transfers badly. i want to use transparent mode. would this effect p2p traffic?

Enable connection shareing on the connection comeing from the ISP. ICS will work with anything provided it uses standard networking prtocals. (ive used it with linux, windows, xbox, ps2, pocket pc, etc...)

How can I change default desktop background from "bliss" to
janus zeal replied to Barian's topic in Windows XP
The easyest way would be to replace \i386\bliss.jp_ with your file, compressed with MS's "diamond" archiver. (i beleve thats the name) -
what ide bus its on shouldnt matter. remove/disable any devices you dont need to run windows xp setup, finsh, then enable them one at a time and see how the system acts. (sound, lan, etc)

Unlikely with NAV installed, but there are viruses that just write junk data to the drive. if you think that may be it try useing trendmicro house call. (free online scanner)

err, nevermind. sorry ^_^;

Windows XP bsod: http://www.thegamerspit.com/~jz/Windows_XP_BSOD.png Did you recently make any hardware changes? also, if your running cpu intensive apps they can make the computer overheat.

Im not a linux fanboi or anything, but linux installs take up sometimes as much as 15 GBs and none of the linux people complain. (then again, linux comes with just about every app most ppl would need... browser, office suite, etc)

everything in your %userprofile% directory is counted, including temp files, stuff on your desktop, my docs, etc... if all your stuff (my docs or whatever) is stored on a network share then it may not be counting that all of the time. are you a member of a domain? edit... also, being a member of the administrators group wont make a diffrence.

Actaully, it looks like its slightly above the center. Also, ive seen systems that had the ctrl-alt-del dialog in the top right corner. i have no idea how they did it though.

Maybe the router has a firewall that blocks trafic between computers on the LAN. look for firewall settings in the router config. if they can access the internet but not eachother, and there is no firewall, this is the only thing i can think of... (then again, we all know how much a pain windows networking is to get working right.)

What Are The Minimum Processors Needed To Run 98 & 98SE
janus zeal replied to Atmosphere XG's topic in Windows 9x/ME
msgloop.exe and msg.32.exe are driver files for a crystal audio sound card, although i dont know if they really need to be running. -
make sure the computer's windows firewalls are disabled. also, you didnt just type the ip, right? you have to put \\ before network names. my laptop's private ip is 10.0.7.14 and its netbios name is hanabishi, so to get to it from another computer i would type: \\10.0.7.14or \\hanabishi

I really doubt that the lan would be faster then the hard drive when just copying one file. windows networking isnt the best. idk if its possable to make it to much faster. one idea is to uninstall any unneeded protocols

agreed. ^_^

XP, about every 5 or 6 months. my XP installs seem to get buggy around that time. 98 i have never had to reinstall on any of my PCs. (except once when i was messing around in dos mode with some german file manager (dont ask) and i accidently deleted the /windows/ folder ^_^;; oops) also i have not got a virus or infection of any kind for years.

i cant find the source for this, so you can beleve it or not, but MS people have already said that any system running windows belongs to them. its fine for MS to not want people to copy windows, and maybe even WGA isnt that bad.. if it worked right. My girlfriend got a brandnew acer travelmate laptop that used a VLK. we couldnt do updates because it was a VLK. we called MS and they said that it was either leaked, or something was wrong with the update validator. then they offered to give us a cheeper price on xp pro. yeah, we want to pay 150$ for xp pro after paying 1500$ for a laptop. Also, wga says that the copy of XP on my hp laptop is not valid, tho windows updates says it is. wtf?
