XP Built in Encryption - is it safe?
janus zeal replied to jdefreitas's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
Im not sure about any details, but it works like this. your windows xp user account has a number, called a clsid. that number is unique to that account. the clsid and your password are used to encrypt the data. anyone trying to access the files from another account wont be able to, and if they somehow remove/change your password then the files will be inaccessable. however, if someone gets your password then your screwed. what i do when i need to protect files is just create a rar or 7z archive and put a password on it, you might want to try that. -

in japan..well, tokyo at least, you can get ~28 mbps broadband and voip from yahoo for about 3838 yen (~34$) for an extra 1000 yen (~8$) you can get a wifi router. -
Acer Aspire 5670. you can get windows xp drivers here: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/noteb..._5620_5670.html ive tryed a program called driver magic to get drivers and only one of them is in the 62nds database. i also tryed looking on driver guide, to no avail... my only option i guess is editing INFs, but i dont know how to do that. i would supply the model numbers, but some of them i dont know... here is what i know: Intel Wireless g 3945ABG ATi Moblity Radeon - driver found Broadcom 5789M gigabit lan some kind of 6-in-1 card reader some kind of "high definition audio bus" some kind of conexant modem the main things are the wifi and lan, and the sound. although it would be nice to be able to use all the devices... ive found 3rd party drivers for the video card (that i use anyways on my desktop - omega drivers)

I have a copy of windows xp on my desktop that i .. found someplace. i now have a legit windows xp oem serial. im wondering if i can change the serial of the install i have now to the new one. normally this would be quite easy, useing the activation wizard or the magical jelly bean keyfinder, but the install i have now is xp corp. is there some way to use an oem key on a corparate install?

Thats going to be hard to do if windows file protection is active...

If your talking about the Soundblaster sound card, there is most likely a windows 9x/me installer for it. look on the creative website, or the install cd for me drivers for your card.

Small correction, it's actually "setup.exe /P I". I will try that if what im trying now doesnt work. (installed windows in a VM, then copyed the files to the laptop... still copying...) edit: didnt work, trying with /P I, if that doesnt work then i will try with /P A edit: worked! idk why i didnt think of that, i was so worried it would be something worse, i didnt think of it being acpi >_< now what 'unoffical' mods should i add to this to make it run better?

Well, thats good to know for other apps. i checked the sims website and it says windows 98 is supported. i guess i shouldnt just take peoples word for things~ what 'hacks' would you recomend for this system? besides the service pack of course. edit: problem: i started installing windows 98se, while windows was "initializeing driver database" i got the BSOD. fatal exception 0e... etc... im going to try disableing every unneeded device in the bios... could it be the 1024 MBs of ram? edit: took out the ram and put in 256 mb, same problem

On all my systems i have 98se, even my p4. Normally i always pick 98se (with the service pack) over xp, however, i was wondering if it would be a good idea to install it on her laptop because of the dual core cpu, and the sata drive. Beleve me, i know exactly how "secure" xp and vista are. thus my running 98. ive had quite a few times where if i didnt have another computer handy to fix a problem with an xp system, i would be screwed. (sorry) Im going to create a drive image of her current system, then install 98se. i doubt anything will go wrong, but if it does i will have the original disk image. lol, that being said, does anyone know a good, free disk imageing tool? [edit] something i havent thought of. my girlfriend is hughly obsessed with the sims 2. the sims 2 clams to not run on windows 98. is there some way i can make it run?
-
you sure about the hard drive? i read that sata drives cause alot of problems in 98...
-
i didnt really think it would be a good idea, now im thinking about linux.

janus zeal replied to citizeneman's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I have used the freshdevice DL manager a while ago, but it was too buggy for my taste. They may have fixed it by now, I don't know. I don't remember the biggest file, but once I was online for over 8 days (!!) uninterrupted on a $10/month dialup line. my friend chozo used to go on for weeks at a time over dialup -
At the beginning of the HDD is a very bad sign... that's where the OS loader and partition table reside. A new hard drive seems to be the only solution. Fortunately they're not as expensive as they used to be. while that is probly true, you need to rule out other things like ram, mainboard, etc... problems with ram cause this type of thing alot.

ive had the same thing happen with a linksys wifi-b card. this on top of all the other crap ive delt with useing this card made me order another wifi adapter. all i can think of is to make sure you have the latest drivers...

most likely blank lines in autoexec.bat did the same thing on my computer, till i opened autoexec in metapad(notepad replacement) and went to the end of the last line and pressed delete a few times...

What's the largest file you have downloaded using dial-up
janus zeal replied to citizeneman's topic in Windows 9x/ME
largest file ive downloaded is ~700 mb cd image took about a week...3 or 4 hours a day. now ive got adsl, i can download a 700 mb file in about 10 mins... -
I dont know if you can do this from the setup cd. but on an ntfs drive you can set security permissions to not allow access to \program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe thats what i do on my 2k and xp systems to force people to use firefox lol

Something required to install IE 7 isnt there. do you have service pack 2 installed? (for xp) or sp1 for windows 2003?
-
i didnt think of that... you might have the files already. sometimes windows setup copys them to the hard disk. the default folder is \windows\options\cabs another idea is to use the find feature to see if the file already exists someplace on the disk. (although it probly wont because of it being a device the computer has never seen before. also, this wont find files if they are inside cabs)

it shouldnt be 20 chars, it should be 25. are you sure the key your trying to use is for windows 98se?
