  1. It's the newer laptops with their more powerful CPUs that generate the extra heat. I have an old 386 laptop that still works fine, since it doesn't get very hot.
  2. Are proxy settings correct?
  3. Is Explorer.exe even running? You could try starting it from the Task Manager...
  4. My recommendation is not to install XP on that machine as you will not be very pleased with the performance. Boot from a 98SE disk (DOS 7.1) and make sure you have the CD-ROM drivers loaded. Then run WINNT.EXE from the I386 directory of the CD (or copy the whole directory to the hard drive) to begin the installation process.
  5. The w32.jeefo virus just appends itself to the file and packs its resources so it doesn't work normally without the virus being active, as the virus will hook file opens and restore the resource section on-demand. Your removal program probably was unable to unpack and restore the resources section of the infected programs, thus they refuse to run. You might need to reinfect (!) your system so that you can remove it properly. (This virus isn't particularly harmful.) The remover here works well: http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/jeefoa.html
  6. 15mb or 15Gb? DOS 6.x cannot access FAT32 partitions. DOS 7.0 can access FAT32 partitions, but does not provide a command-line defragger that supports them.
  7. Stop any background services that are not essential to the operation of the computer, then defrag. You should only have ~10 processes running (the critical system ones). Ending explorer.exe and then defragging may also help to release locked files.
  8. You might want to redownload and reinstall the Proxomitron. I've also been using v4.4 for quite some time and haven't had any problems with it yet.
  9. Run MemTest86+ on your system to see if it detects any errors. Bad RAM will probably fail on the first pass.
  10. I have IE 6.0 and I tried to add *://*.microsoft.com and it worked fine... Does your user account have write access to the registry key where the sites list is kept?
  11. [wrong section] Just open in Explorer?
  12. You mean firmware programming in VB for embedded system? No. VB is too resource-intensive and inefficient for embedded systems, not to mention being a Microsoft Windows-exclusive programming "language".
  13. The closest thing to a hardware antivirus is a dedicated virusscanning server, and even that is just a normal PC running antivirus software. The reason why hardware antivirus doesn't exist is because it's difficult to update hardware / firmware while software can be easily updated to keep up with the latest virii.
  14. Nothing should get damaged, but nothing will happen either.
  15. 5 psi?? You'll never get anywhere near that with an ordinary fan... much less a quiet one. It's very difficult to have such a high pressure and a high flow rate at the same time.
  16. Freezing at the startup menu? Probably not a software problem. Laptops are known to overheat due to their small size and diminuitive cooling systems. Clean out the fan.
  17. 56Kb/s (56 kilobits) dialup, not 56KB/s (kilobytes). Maximum theoretical throughput is 7KB/s (kilobytes). Highest I've seen when I was on dial-up was 6KB/s.
  18. Looks like a corrupted free space count. CHKDSK should be able to fix it. The reason why it's displaying the strange non-number of used space is probably because it subtracts capacity from free space, and the unsigned 64-bit integer used to hold it wrapped around to a huge positive value. Also, why is the text multicolored (I see pink brown and blue)? Video RAM problems?
  19. 3.7GHz should be attainable, if not with the stock fan an aftermarket one should work. With water cooling it might be able to get 4GHz.
  20. Flicker? Are you sure it's not a bad video cable or monitor?
  21. You can bolt two or more fans together in series, increasing the air pressure to compensate for the increased air restriction of the filter.
  22. I think it uses an LSP to intercept network activity? You need to remove it with LSPfix.
  23. What happens if you leave the SE kernel in 98FE? Any disadvantages/advantages of doing so?
  24. If you have the license then it should be legal...
  25. Why would I need a program just to change icons, when a (free) resource editor works perfectly fine?
