  1. I have an older CompaQ PC with a 565Mhz processor and 127 Mb RAM. I want to Install XP for a new PC (not an upgrade). I do not have a boot disk for the XP CD. Will someone please tell me the steps I need to do to install XP. I know how to do most operations but I am ignorant when it comes to technical jargon and operations. What is nlite and how would I use it if needed? Thanks a bunch. Can the emergency boot disk from Me or Win 98SE be used as a boot?
  2. I was copying CD's to My Documents folder and sometime during the this process I went to go to another file under My Documents and to my surprise I had no files listed except the My Music files I had been working on. I have tried to do a system restore to retrieve the lost files but even that did not restore the missing files. Is there a diagnostic program that will find and fix my problem. By the way, I am using ME with Mozilla firefox internet browser.
  3. I recently bought a laptop and want to use the briefcase feature in Me to work on files and update files away from my desktop. I have tried to set up a communication port using the briefcase wizard. A window asks for a LPT 1 or a Com port to install to. I get a message that says a port cannot be found and to reboot the computer. This doesn't help anything. How do I pick the right port and how do I do this properly to get the briefcase fuction to work on my desktop and laptop?
  4. I use Excel 2002 on my desktop (using Win Me) that has been recently upgraded from Win 98 to Me. I don't have any problems with my desktop. I bought a used laptop that was using Win 98 and upgraded it to Win Me also. I installed Excell 2002 but whenever I try to open it I get an error message that says "The program was improperly shut down the last time and an error has occurred in the EXCEL.EXE file and the program will now close". The system will then freeze up and will nto allow me to shut the system down except by turning the computer off. Can someone help me. Also the system restore is inoperable. It will not create a restore point.
  5. I use Win Me OS and I cannot get my system restore to function. When I open the restore window an error message appears that says Stmgr has caused an error in WINTRUST.DLL. Stmgr will now close. I have tried to enter a manual restore point but an error message appears that says, " Cannot create a restore point. Restart your computer and try again". Restarting my computer does not change anything. Can anyone help me find a solution to this problem?
  6. I did have Win 98SE OS but went to Me because I needed Excel installed on my system. When I tried to install the Excel program a message said that a newer OS version needed to be installed. So, I installed Win Me so that I could get Excel to work. I have had nothing but trouble from security breakdowns, unwanted popups, computer locking up, and numerous errors. I wish I could start over from scratch using Win 98SE and have Excel. I need Excell to work because I have a Palm pda that requires an Excel program. Can anyone out there help me find a solution?
  7. I have a toolbar with a search window with various advertising buttons on it that appeared in all of my windows a few days ago. I have tried to remove this toolbar by right clicking on empty space and removing the checkmark from the drop down menu list. The check marks are there but subdued and will not highlight when clicked on or selected. How can I remove this unwanted toolbar and its associated buttons.
  8. I am ordering a larger hard drive for my desktop (a Maxtor 80 Gb). There are two types of interface an SATA and an IDE. Which hard drive should I order and why? I don't know the difference between them except I do know that I need to order the retail package.
  9. I want to purchase a 80 Gb hard drive for my desktop PC from newegg.com. The one I would like to have says OEM only under packaging. What does OEM stand for. I was looking at an identical hard drive except under packaging it said "retail". The difference in cost was about 30 dollars. What is the reason for that. I know it doesn't cost $30 for packaging. Please inform this dumb a...ss.
  10. I recently purchased a Palm One Tungsten E handheld. I have found out that this unit will not do what I envisioned it to do unless I buy a lot of extra operating systems and applications. I have an older Desktop PC using Win 98 or Me. ( I have both OS's) I wanted my handheld to use for spreadheet functions, ebooks, media (audio, video, pictures, etc.) calendar, appts. and calculator. My PalmOne requires Office and Outlook applications which require a newer version of Windows for operation i.e. XP or newer on my PC. My question is: Is there a handheld out there that will work with my present OS system Win98 or Me) and will work with my Works applications instead of Word and Office Applications? The PalmOne handheld Tungsten E will do everything I need except the spreadsheet functions which I would really like to use. It would save me lots of valuable time.
  11. Prathapml, I have Win98 on my Desktop Pc. The manual for the palm one said that i could download Outlook and Office from my desktop into the pda to expand its capabilities. I did not have Office or Outlook installed on my desktop. so I purchased Office 2003 to install on my desktop. When I inserted the Office program disk into my CD Rom a message appeared that said "The specified program requires a newer version of Windows. So then I purchased Windows Me which is a neewer version of Windows. When I inserted the Office 2003 program again I got the same message for a newer version of Windows. I have spent far too much money already for programming that isn't compatible with each other. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
  12. I purchased a Palm One pda but I was unaware that the programming would not accept the use of Win98. When I tried to install Office 2003 and Outlook a message appeared that said, " The specified program requires a newer version of Windows. Does anyone have some possible solutions for my dilemma?
