  1. I just did a search for "at most 1024KB" and got over 20,000 files, compared to less than 1000 for "at least 1024KB". So your point that the majority of files are over 1Mb is proved to be false. In fact, I wouldn't mind if the granularity was reduced to searching by bytes, but making it more granular is definitely an inconvenience. Agreed. Perhaps you should make that suggestion to the Vista beta-testers so they can tell M$ about it.
  2. It just adds three more functions to the kernel, so that some NT-only programs may be able to run. Pleased to hear your system is still working fine.Any reports on system (in)stability are greatly appreciated. This is currently a beta-test, as I am considering to ask for inclusion of this into the next version of 98SE USP. Coming soon in a few months: LARGE DISK SUPPORT!
  3. Except for that fact that the "2Mb" file you're searching for might actually be 2097152 bytes, so if you put "less than or equal to 2000000" you'll have missed it!
  4. Any moisture in the connector, and are the contacts inside it in good condition?
  5. Separate video card is always faster. Integrated chipsets are low-performance since they have to be cheap.
  6. ...or Windows Explorer's Copy+Paste.
  7. This patch was given to me by an individual that wishes to remain anonymous. It patches the kernel32.dll in Windows 98 and 98SE to add support for the previously NT-only APIs VirtualAllocEx, VirtualFreeEx, and CreateRemoteThread. Might be useful in getting a few more NT-only programs to run on 9x. Source code is included. win98updt0001.zip
  8. Have you looked at AutoRuns and HiJackThis's log?
  9. Rightclick, Sort By Name?
  10. Not just for viruses, it shows everything that gets loaded on startup so you can find and remove unnecessary startup items.
  11. Here you go... I had to rebuild the archive with PKZIPFIX before it'd open properly...
  12. Call it from AUTOEXEC.BAT, from any of the Run keys in the registry, from Startup folder... etc.
  13. Run HiJackThis and post its log. Much easier to read than a screenshot of the task manager. There is also a program by Microsoft called BootVis that can show the time it takes for various components to initialise during the boot process.
  14. I think that the redrawing is just a normal operation. The OS doesn't know about the overlay so it redraws the screen.
  15. Check the setting, make sure it will retain cookies for this site.
  16. Although this method is inherently insecure, it should be sufficient security if you're sure that all your users are a bit on the "dumb" side and don't know a thing about this
  17. Update: Something finally decided to give up - I heard a loud pop followed by a short frying sound just a few hours ago. Surprisingly, the machine continued running, so I shut it off, pulled out the fan and CPU, and inspected the mobo closely around the area where the sound was coming from. There seems to be no damage to any components, it all looked like it did before. I reinstalled everything and turned it back on, it still works (doing some priming now) but so far I haven't heard the sounds nor noticed anything else weird.
  18. If your machine doesn't have any exploitable services running, just ignore the attacks since they're not going to harm your computer if there isn't anything to exploit. I once got ~60 incoming connection attempts per day before I changed ISPs, but nothing really happened since I didn't have any open ports.
  19. FYI the floppy driver is HSFLOP.PDR, you might want to try other versions of it.
  20. Nforce 3?
  21. Remember, even if you do that, the users can still shutdown by turning off the power completely.
  22. Some other corruption must be present in Windows itself. My best suggestion would be to reinstall Windows over your existing installation.
  23. Previous builds of... what? As far as I know only two versions of 98 were officially released: 4.10.1998 and 4.10.2222A
  24. Your HDD is probably dying - check the event log for any recorded problems. It's also probably in PIO instead of DMA mode - ensure DMA option for the HDD properties in Device Manager is set.
  25. The 32-bit operating system will work fine on a 64-bit processor, it just won't take advantage of 64-bit mode. DEP can be disabled in BIOS setup, as M$ link above shows.
