  1. Do you know much at all about drivers, coding, and how the infrared hardware works? If not it will be much too difficult for you to do this.
  2. I'm just using the original 4.10.2222 USER.EXE, I haven't had any problems with it.
  3. You're most likely using a very old system with an integrated graphics card that uses onboard RAM as video memory.
  4. Any text in the script will appear directly in the resulting file, this is not a very secure method at all. With an uncompressed EXE, I could probably open it in Notepad and locate the password along with the computername and username. If it was compressed, I can still unpack it.
  5. That would be Microsoft's own Java, I believe... You shouldn't need the updates unless you're using it.
  6. With cat... which stands for "concatenate". http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/CGI/man-cgi?cat e.g. cat file.part1 file.part2 > wholefile will join the two parts together in order to form wholefile.
  7. What heatsink/fan are you using? Have you used a proper quantity of thermal compound? P4s do run hot, but there's no need to worry about overheating, they automatically reduce the clock speed as the temperature nears the fixed setpoint which is probably 76° for your CPU (check the Intel datasheet to be sure exactly). In this way, performance will decrease drastically. If the temperature reaches ~120°C it will automatically shut off completely.
  8. 55°C is perfectly fine for full-load CPU temp, so if you can slow down the CPU fan some more it'll be a bit quieter without risking overheating. Anything over 70° is not recommended, but mid 60s are alright. Remember, the CPU won't normally be running at full load for extensive periods of time in normal use. It's normally a tradeoff between cooling and sound; the better cooling you want, the louder it's going to be. Of course, water cooling is an exception to this - it's very quiet but cools very well too. My temperatures (in a nominal 16°C (60°F) room): Idle: System:20, CPU:27, Vid:don't know exactly, heatsink feels slightly warm (fanless GeForce FX5200) Full: System:25, CPU:52, Vid:probably ~50° - heatsink feels very warm But I have a total of 12 fans, so it's not exactly quiet...
  9. I just remove them manually using HiJackThis with a bit of Regedit. (This is on friend's computers, mine has never had an infection since I installed the OS more than 5 years ago.)
  10. Might want to start reading here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent
  11. v2.72. I don't feel a need to update at all.
  12. I've never tried it before, and since you're lucky enough to have MSDN-AA and can download it for free legally, go ahead! It'd be interesting to post the results you get with it. As the description shows, it's designed for embedded systems, i.e. with limited HDD space (I believe it can run from a flash card?), memory, and CPU power. Might prove to be just an nLited XP, but worth a try anyway. B)
  13. I don't trust all those "free registry cleaner!" that keeps coming up often in the advertising. Most of them either don't work, may do something insignificant, or completely trash the registry. When performance is a problem, the registry is nearly always not corrupted or otherwise damaged. Excessive startup entries and malware are probably the cause. Would help to post a HiJackThis log...
  14. Here's one, but it's 3Mb which is surprisingly large for a file-splitter: http://www.xs4all.nl/~loekjehe/Split&Concat/ Since OS X is Linux based you can just use the appropriately named split command.
  15. If you turn up the volume there'll be a difference But in general standalone speakers are louder than built-in ones since they're usually bigger and more powerful.
  16. The addresses assigned to the video card itself are physical addresses, and generally can't be changed very easily except through PnP configuration. Quite possibly there is PnP Configuration option in the BIOS which might have what you need. The addresses you mentioned from the W98RK are virtual addresses, and have nothing to do with the hardware itself.
  17. Use LZMA, maximum dictionary size and maximum compression option. (It'll be very slow but have good results...)
  18. Getting an overclock and getting an overclock that you can actually *use* daily without worrying about the cooling are two completely different things... I have a P4 3.6 that's running at 4.17 on air cooling and it's been stable for 6 months... it's the system I regularly use. That's what I consider to be a good overclock.
  19. Probably bad VRAM. Unless you know how to solder SMDs and can find where to buy replacement chips, it's not worth repairing. New and much better card would cost less.
  20. It looks too cluttered for a file manager.
  21. Windows classic. It looks clean, uncluttered, and very business-like. No fancy effects for me. I don't like GUIs that have everything being a memory-consuming set of bitmaps.
  22. LLXX

    Windows XP

You can just change the password... even if you have password hash you can't get original password back.
  23. Wierd... this is the type of commercial that makes you go "Hmm... what's this supposed to be about?"
  24. That would be the error reporting service. Scan for virii and other malware.
  25. Here's what I have in mpegfile... I'm not using WMP I'm using MS ActiveMovie to play them. REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mpegfile] @="Movie File (MPEG)" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mpegfile\DefaultIcon] @="C:\\PROGRA~1\\WINDOW~1\\wmplayer.exe,-120" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mpegfile\Shell] @="play" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mpegfile\Shell\Open] @="&Open" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mpegfile\Shell\Open\Command] @="c:\\windows\\rundll32.exe c:\\windows\\SYSTEM\\amovie.ocx,RunDll /open %1" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mpegfile\CLSID] @="{00022601-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"
