  1. I have hooked onto Panda's Cloud Antivirus. If you are familiar with cloud computing, you know it is basically running software over the internet based on the internet so you don't have to install it on your machine. (Think Google Docs for example). The Panda Cloud Antivirus uses their engine to scan your computer, however all updates are constantly updated as long as you are online. So, for example Avast would update once daily sometimes several times in outbreaks, but the Panda cloud is always updated as the definitions are retrieved realtime from their systems as I understand it. So, if they get a fix for a new virus out in the wild, you don't have to wait for the update from your vendor to download to the system, it is already there. (If that makes sense). OK, so I just found the post that explains how it works on the link here. Best said by them. I switched from Avast due to the level of protection. But that is my opinion and anyone can take it for what it's worth.
  2. Vonage doesn't have local numbers. I am really looking at another company now and so far the best support option. BBTELSYS. I just spoke with one of the techs there and he was quite thorough in answering my questions. Upside, Local numbers! Downside, the shipping time. 4-5days. Oh well, can't win them all. Gave him my specs on router and broadband provider, and he seemed to think there would not be any problems. (even with my downloading of Linux ISO's) and other people in my house online in their pc's (up to 5 at a time connected chatting and surfing).
  3. I am switching over to VOIP here in the next couple of weeks and have ruled out Vonage as they are not in my area (no local number). I have checked into VOIP.NET and also Packet8.net Both look to be of good quality and service. Does anyone have any experience with either of these companies, or any other recommendations? I am in Oregon and have to have a local number (Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass, Central Point, Eagle Point -my home town - Phoenix, Talent, Merlin, Cave Junction, White City). Area code 541. So far, voip.net gives me a Grants Pass number (Local, but am also going to use this number for business and don't want to confuse my customers), Packet 8 gives me Medford which is a heck of a lot closer. Any help is much appreciated!
  4. Windows vista is now open to the public for beta testing! WOOT! http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/b...86/download.htm
  5. Try "Ghosting" your partition with Symantic's Ghost program or the like. That will enable you to split the partition into many cd's or DVD's. Or try any other partition mirroring program.
  6. Anyone know if Hoverdesk is going into a non-existant status? I figured I would go ahead and purchase it, but their associate company for registering is out of business. I emailed the registration email address listed on their web site (hoverdesk), and it bounced out as an invalid inbox. Anybody have any similar problems with them? UPDATE: Emails to the programmer have gone unanswered as using through their web links. Checked the domain registration, looks as if it is going to expire in April of this year. Even though they have time to update and renew the domain registration, based on what I have seen on other forums and sites, they are becoming a non-existant company. Just when I finally found an alternate shell that I really liked.
  7. Ok, just got the new replacement laptop keyboard plugged in, and it didn't work too well. The following keys did not work: 8il. Down arrow and a few others. I thought that it was a dead deal and the mobo decided to fry due to the water. But then I went ahead and took another stab at it. I removed the keyboard, played with the seating of the connector and it still did not work, BUT, after positioning the keyboard a little oddly and then fastening it in w/o the shield to cover the connector, it works perfectly. Any oddball ideas out there as to why it works w/o the sheild and the ribbon cable tilted off the normal horizontal plane? I am considering myself lucky in this one for now.
  8. I didn't think of that myself as far as insulating, but do know that for about 99% of it, all electronic components are either covered by the plastic casing itself underneith, or covered already in a thin plastic film. I did hook up the external USB keyboard and it works just like a charm, although very un-natural for a laptop.
  9. If you have a spare cpu compat with the board laying around, you can install that and then do the bios update from the manufacturer's web site and when done, install the opteron from there. I would think the 450w PSU would work fine.
  10. Maybe a stupid question, but I had this happen to a buddy of mine who bought all parts and got so involved in assembling the system he missed one important thing... Did you make sure that your power switch connector to the mainboard is in the correct position and not in reverse polarity? Like I said, maybe a stupid question, but sometimes it's those little obvious things we overlook.
  11. Nice find! I actually just managed to pull the keyboard out about 1 hour before I got your message here. Go figure! I am pretty sure it is toasted. I checked it out, and to the touch, it is quite dry. I am going down to the store to pick up a USB keyboard to try it out and will see if it works. Cross your fingers. If all works well as I hope it should, I will use that until my replacement comes from Good 'ol neighboring Canada. (have to hit ebay first where I saw the one I need.) Now for those that don't know, to dissasemble the keyboard requires an act of congress as it is completely "welded" at the plastic points, so no luck. I used to work on keyboards which had carbon pads such as this and they were quite easy to repair, but not on this one. Thanks for all your help and I will keep you all posted.
  12. Hey thanks for your help! I do have one question though - how do I get the assembly open? I removed all screws, all boards inside which were removable (Ram, modem HDD etc), but upon pulling the unit open, it will not come apart. I believe I a missing a screw somewhere (No pun intended).
  13. Here's the issue - I came home today to find out that my daughter spilled a full mug (24oz) of water into my laptop with it's lid closed and powered down. She mopped it up, then turned it on, the system powered up, but keyboard ran away (repeating key forever). She didn't know any better and left it running until it's power saver went into effect and shut it down. When I attempted to turn the laptop on without knowing that this had happened, I noticed the keyboard issue. I have it completely locked down which requires a password upon power on (no way that I know of to bypass). This has left my laptop crippled. I called toshiba support and spoke to them and was informed that they will not repair this under standard warranty. Ok, so I bite the bullet and ask what part number I need, and was promptly told they could not give that out. So, now I am on Ebay and can't figure out if it is compatible with other models. Here are my specs: Toshiba A55-S106 (Walmart Special) It seems to me that it would be directly compatible with the other A55 series, but they wouldn't advise me on that either. I am now letting the system air dry after popping all the keys off, will go away for the weekend and come back to hopefully a healthy keyboard, but need to know my options if at all for the keyboard. Can anyone advise on the compatibility of this model, or part numbers? Thanks!
  14. I had the same problem with my toshiba notebook. Good luck! I ended up reformatting and installing xp pro over the default system from Toshiba. That worked like a charm.
  15. First of all, let me make it clear that I am NOT Looking for warez or other illegal junk. I am just wanting to know how I can get involved in the beta testing for Vista. I used to be a beta tester for SP2, but have since lost my information. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!
