  1. I was having this same problem on IE6, it was going to "about:blank". I deleted the entry that causes this and it still did it. It was because I was only editing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE part of the registry and it is in HKEY_CURRENT_USER! All I had to do was change the "Start Page" entry to Google's address. Make sure you change it in the HKCU though not just HKLM.
  2. In WINNT.SIF under [shell] you put this code... DefaultStartPanelOff = Yes This automatically puts "My Computer" and "My Documents" on the Desktop. (Info is from the MSFN Unattended guide)
  3. Well I have to defend the guy, in his first post he posted two pictures of what he does not want and what he does want and also said in that first post... "so windows installs and you have unmolested gui" It is the people saying "right click" this and "right click" that who ARE stupid because the guy can obviously do it manually since he posted screenshots of the two different ways it can look! People do need telling they are "not very good at this" when its the truth. Whats amazing is no one has even answered this question STILL to this day - put it in WINNT.SIF alright - but thats not an answer or should I say thats not the code.
  4. Because I am doing it unattended and cannot "click" the taskbar if it isn't there. Thanks for the entertainment, it was worth it. I worked this out anyway - its the same tweak as XP, it just doesnt work in an already installed environment, but applied durin unattended, it does work.
  5. I complained about this new way of doing unattended in the beginning but now i can see, it is a far better, easier and more customizable way. I only have one problem though if I use oscdimg.exe to compile my ISO - it ends up putting every single file and folder name in uppercase. This normally wouldnt be a problem but I am putting things on the start menu and desktop and it just looks horrible! Using oscdimg.exe with these switches > -m -n -h -o -b -m = Override 700Mb ISO limitation -n = Allow long filenames -h = Include hidden files and directories -o = Encode duplicate files only once (saves about 4% of your Vista ISO) -b = Make bootable -nt = Make compatible with Windows NT v3.51 (not recommended, this leads to file renaming!) There is no switch to toggle uppercase on and off when checking via oscdimg.exe /? Here is the MS description straight from the command window > Usage: OSCDIMG [options] sourceroot targetfile -l volume label, no spaces (e.g. -lMYLABEL) -t time stamp for all files and directories, no spaces, any delimiter (e.g. -t12/31/2000,15:01:00) -g encode GMT time for files rather than local time -h include hidden files and directories -n allow long filenames (longer than DOS 8.3 names) -nt allow long filenames, restricted to NT 3.51 compatibility -b "El Torito" boot sector file, no spaces (e.g. -bc:\location\cdboot.bin) -x compute and encode "AutoCRC" values in image -o optimize storage by encoding duplicate files only once -oi ignore diamond compression timestamps when comparing files -os show duplicate files while creating image (-o options can be combined like -ois) Instead of using oscdimg.exe I have gone back to the older cdimage.exe To use cdimage I use the following > start cdimage.exe -lISOlabel -h -j1 -m -o -b\ROOT_FOLDER\boot\etfsboot.com \ROOT_FOLDER C:\Vista.iso This works fine (cdimage can use etfsboot.com to make Vista bootable) but you do not have the Segoe font on the "Loading Boot Files" part at the very beginning, not that I really care about this to be honest - in fact without it loading that font it seems to load the boot files in about a quarter of the time! The main thing is, using cdimage, it does not put all your files and folder names in uppercase, it leaves the case intact.
  6. I got it working by just leaving the section out entirely. I must admit though its tough unless you use the WAIK, then its really easy.
  7. Do I dig Microsoft now lets see... ... well, I would dig a big hole and toss Microsoft into it! It is built where earthquakes can happen, we can only prey. D4MN! - so close!
  8. ExamDiff. Its free but in the free version you cannot edit the files... http://www.prestosoft.com/ps.asp?page=edp_examdiff
  9. AutoIt v2 I say... v3 is a whole other thing (harder to learn the code)
  10. Nothing you can remove in nLite can make it not install, thats why nLite is now a final version. Are you using anything other than nLite, like driverpacks added on afterwards etc?
  11. Not trying to annoy people here but why continue to use an eight year old OS that cannot handle NTFS and cannot handle files over 4Gb? The answer to the question of "how can Win98se run on the latest hardware is - don't use Win98se, just use XP". If theres any reason to continue using Win98 now we have XP, then I am all ears.
  12. You could always uncab (with 7-zip) NLITE.IN_ and Ctrl+F for Themes, if it says ,4 change it to ,2 then recab it (with makecab)
  13. Get Firefox or Opera and use WinDiz
  14. I don't like it, for one reason: If you take away IE6 with nLite then IE7 will not install, therefore, it relies on IE6. IE7 takes up something like 35Mb - and yet, it needs files that are in IE6 in order to work! Imagine this happening with Firefox. I mean, imagine downloading Firefox v2.0 and it saying "Sorry, you seem to not have Firefox v1.5 installed so v2.0 cannot be installed". It just doesn't happen, unless it is Microsoft. I wouldn't go so far to say I hate IE7, but it seems pointless to me, when we have Opera and Firefox which incidentally both work without this inane necessity to have a previous version installed.
  15. This to me is like asking "do you crawl on all fours, or walk"
  16. He probably means that horrible ClearType effect. Take a screenshot of any Vista window and zoom in on the text, its silly, it looks like you should be wearing 3D glasses to look at it... Microsoft dropped the ball with this I think. Why do they insist on fixing something that is not broken?! That text was taken from one of the setup screens, if you can "disable" the fuzzy text on the setup screens, let me know how you did it.
  17. I know the feeling. Add this registry tweak to your registry file... [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Plus!\Themes\Current] @=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\ 00,5c,00,72,00,65,00,73,00,6f,00,75,00,72,00,63,00,65,00,73,00,5c,00,54,00,\ 68,00,65,00,6d,00,65,00,73,00,5c,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,6f,00,77,00,73,\ 00,20,00,43,00,6c,00,61,00,73,00,73,00,69,00,63,00,2e,00,74,00,68,00,65,00,\ 6d,00,65,00,00,00
  18. The AIO in question does not work, because the directory structure is different. You can't be serious? Nuhi nooooooooooooo! Noooooooooo! They just come along and buy everyone Heh, good luck with Alcohol 120%/any Firewall/any Antivirus. BTW don't even think about installing Alcohol 120% - causes BSOD in normal and safe mode, meaning either you need a PE disc or you need to re-install Vista - this is on ALL versions of Vista of course, its nothing to do with vLite.
  19. The fact of the matter is - some people don't trust Microsoft and it is probably Microsofts EXE's that they want to block. I lost count of how many times on XP I have seen "NSOSKRNL.EXE is trying to broadcast to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" Is the Vista Firewall going to block Microsoft EXE's? I doubt it, like it says in this topic, the Vista firewall does not tell you when something is blocked and does not have logging enabled. No one answered this guy. Just says "use a hardware firewall" So lets get this straight then - NO third party software firewall will work on Vista? Someone's REALLY going to have to convince me this OS is worth using im afraid. Before anyone says "why would you block Microsoft EXE's" don't say it, all I will say back is "why don't you want to block MS EXE's". LOL - because things like NTOSKRNL in XP are not meant to access the network, knowing Vista it will probably just have the entire contents of system32 on some sort of "safe list" so then some spyware/worm/trojan/virus can USE the Microsoft EXE's and the built in firewall will just allow it. I changed my mind, you're not gonna be able to convince me to use Vista I don't think, not when no third party software firewall can possibly be installed, thats just 100% lame. You can say the built in firewall is great all day long, still doesn't change the fact that hoards of people simply will not put up with it.
  20. Heh, you're right minigun, I cant see the wood for the trees. People openly say they are using vLite for commercial gain, Nuhi deserves some sort of commission I think. Maybe its not free anymore huh?!
  21. Isn't it quite difficult to "break" the EULA for vLite though? Maybe it should be revised/more strict, maybe not, but all I can get from the EULA is... don't resell vLite, don't include it with magazines unless you have asked Nuhi first, don't disassemble it, don't include/distribute parts of vLite (I assume this means things like NLITE.INF or any other files created solely by vLite that are part of your ISO?) I still can't believe Nuhi GIVES AWAY stuff like nLite and vLite, by now I am sure he could sell nLite... the problem I guess is, people would then expect "after sales support" and with a product of this nature that would be pretty hellish! Still, nLite is absolutely priceless for what it does. I have said this before but it must be the best free program you can possibly get. Yes it beats GIMP, OpenOffice, it beats anything else!
  22. Exactly my thoughts. One persons idea of ugly is another persons preference. To be honest folks if these are the kind of things you're having to complain about, then this must be a good operating system. Its that simple. A year and a half late is rushed? lol It is amazing really how its been 5 long years since XP was released. From 1995 to 2001 (6 years) they released Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98se, Windows 2000, Windows Millennium and Windows XP. Since Windows XP in 2001 there have been no official releases and it is going to be January 2007 before Vista hits the shops. I used the Beta2 of Vista and I think it is a vast improvement over any other Windows OS. Maybe its taken ages to get to the RTM stage it is at now but look at it this way - it has been worked on for the last what... 3 or 4 years? What was the first build of Longhorn? First I ever tried was 4008 but I am sure there were ones before that. Remember the sidebar and explorer crashes? Heh, it has become a million miles more advanced now as "Vista 6000"
  23. Hehe, course its already posted here... if you look that is... http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=87075
  24. Everyone has replied to this comment up to now so I might as well too... "They're there for a reason." Yeah to be turned off because they use RAM. I did a bit of an experiment - exported the whole Services hive, replaced "Start"=dword:00000002 with "Start"=dword:00000003 and you know what... it actually didn't make much difference in the RAM usage at all, but there were a few errors here and there though. In VMware with Vista you can power it off and adjust the RAM down to 224Mb (no less) then boot it up again and it uses less than 150Mb RAM. Sounds impossible, sounds like a joke, but its true... if you have VMware and Vista, try it. It runs pretty smooth on 224Mb RAM too!
  25. I don't know how to do that and keep them as icons but you could use the "Details View" tweak - this gives you small icons but everything will be arranged by name that way... Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ;Details View in all folders [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams] "Settings"=hex:09,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,77,7e,13,73,35,cf,11,ae,\ 69,08,00,2b,2e,12,62,04,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,43,00,00,00
