I run Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium at the office (as a server). It's certainly a beautiful piece of software, but I would never think of running it on my workstation. If I had the money I would run my own domain at home with it, just for the hell of it. I understand the people who convert it to a workstation... I'm just as much into tearing stuff apart just for the sake of knowing I can do it... but then I would be done. If you run Windows 2k3 Server on your desktop you are delusional. I will bet that of the 60 some people (at this time) who have voted "yes" that they run 2k3, 99% of them aren't running a legal version. You sacrifice video performance. Your a fool IMO if you run 2k3 server on your PC.

I'll be upgrading. You can't base your opinion on Longhorn on an Alpha you may have downloaded. That's just not intelligent. The final product is 2 years away.

Visual J# .NET Redistributable 1.1 Language Pack
un4given1 replied to argon007's topic in Application Installs
Well, seeing as there isn't a language pack for English, and the other packages are in other languages, I am finding it hard to help you on this one. I downloaded one but can't quite read it. Which language are you trying to install? -

How can I allow all users to install software
un4given1 replied to ikevin's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Sure you could... just add the 'everyone' group to the 'Administrators' group. Then they aren't "Users" they are "Administrators" I believe he wants the ability to install programs but not the ability to "administer" Am i right? -

Method U use for Application Install?
un4given1 replied to iwod's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I have to be honest and say I haven't tried many of these options so maybe my opinion isn't quite weighed. I am not too much into using a method that isn't supported or where I have to sit and wait for a new version because of a bug or something. I am very well versed in batch script. (or more properly "command script") There really isn't anything I can't do in command scripts. I think that's what I am going to stick with until I learn to use something else myself. -
How can I allow all users to install software
un4given1 replied to ikevin's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
You could unlock registry files and open up folder permissions... but there is no real way to do this. Users aren't supposed to be able to install programs. -
Let's think about it another way... Microsoft employs a LOT of people. They are able to do so because of the money they charge. How will Linux pay people to work for them and create a bigger better product if they don't charge? What will this do to the companies that offer superior products, when they can get a free product that will work for them? What does this do to all of the techs, admins and everyone else out there who know M$? (myself included... guess you could say that's a great deal of the reason I dislike linux, because I don't know it quite so well) I believe Linux is a great product, and I believe it can do much of what M$ can too... I was simply stating that in order for Linux to overrun M$ they will have to put a price on it too. What motivates the people out there to make a superior product above M$? Money. And until the Linux community starts getting paid for their time, it's only a hobby. I would love to see the Linux community slap a small tag on their products, or hell... why not send it out like AOL disks... there are millions who don't have a clue what Linux is. The problem I see is that industry has a standard, M$. If you break into that standard and make multiple products the norm, you take jobs from the people who spent their time learing M$ products. I would love to see a product that was compatible with Windows (I know... long shot) What would happen if Ford decided they were going to build a car that was twice as wide as other cars, so you could only drive it down 2 lane roads... or if their car didn't work on normal roads?

I know Linux is not one company... Thanks. I know the costs associated with Microsoft. I just dumped over 10k upgrading our company to Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium, 15 clients to Windows XP Professional and other upgrades needed. I wouldn't have it any other way either. We moved our server over from Redhat to Windows because the software available in the linux community just wasn't what was available in the Windows community. The cost we saved... productivity. Besides, the cost per user/seat really isn't that outrageous, especially when you take into account everything else it allows us to do (I know Linux can probably do most of it too)

Well, you could always Right click and hold and drag the file. When you drop it you will get a menu that allows you to copy or move it.

@seraph00 A little reading for you...http://www.msfn.org/comments.php?shownews=11234 MSFN = Microsoft Forum Network Why not find yourself back to the linux forum you came from. Don't get me wrong, I see pluses in linux... but this board isn't for Linux. Now certainly it's your own opinion, but once again.. MICROSOFT Forum Network. and the only reason I put gas in my car is because that's the only way it works. Sure, I could find me a nice little Linux hill and give her a push... but come on. the truth is this... Linux will NEVER be a worthy opponent until open licensing goes away and someone is able to line their pockets with the money. You all stand back and preach for open source... but one day that will all change, and if it doesn't you can rest assured Linux isn't going to take over the market.

Or you could just do it like this.... or even easier.... been doin' it this way myself well over a year... you can check an old post of mine and see the many ways I used to use it... http://www.osnn.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-36648.html -
I wouldn't recommend SMS unless you are dealing with a great deal of PCs. SMS is a VERY powerful piece of software.

Riprep + RIS + OEM Drivers
un4given1 replied to Fencer128's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
While most drivers should install using INF files, some drivers do require the use of the "setup.exe" file that accompanies them. A good way to test this is to use Device Manager to install one of these drivers. If you are able to point it to one of these INFs and it will install then that narrows down that problem. If it will not install properly then it may require the use of the install program that comes with it. If that's the case see if you can find a version that allows you to install it using just the INF. -
As long as it's NTFS it will work with the permissions. If he is saving items outside of his profile then YES, he might need to set specific securities for each folder he wishes to set deny.

@MCT Are you willing to wager on that? I guarantee you are incorrect.

set them as USER and they won't be able to access your profile or any other USER profiles.
