Reformat a HDD and maintain product activation of a PC with a VLK?
submix8c replied to E-66's topic in Windows XP
I have never heard of a school using anything but OEM computers as they usually purchased them in quantities at a special price. I seriously doubt you mean Volume License. The good guy/gal at MS probably understood that you gave him/her an OEM-type Product Key and indicated that it would not work with a Retail CD. Ponch has sufficiently described the "ties" of the two types of Keys you seem to be describing. And there should be (if I'm correct) a COA Sticker somewhere on -OR- inside (they sometimes "hid" them) the box. In addition, IF I'm correct, there will be at least one Hidden Partition, maybe even two -OR- three. Get Gparted or a LiveLinux and boot to it to see the "hidden" ones (if any). There ARE methods to creating an OEM-style CD but we can't really provide that here. You can find it on the WWW if you need to. These may help understanding and provide some hints - edit - Hmmm - you posted before I did. I will "assume" XP Pro OEM is on it - http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/hp-compaq-evo-d510/4507-3118_7-20719364.html http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11349_na/11349_na.HTML edit2 - may be no hidden partitions - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-e-g-Windows-8-Software-Recovery/Full-Recovery-of-Compaq-Evo-D510-CMT/td-p/2532177 -
NOT a good idea AT ALL! Period! Scenario - PersonA and PersonB both open FileCopyA for Update. PersonA Changes and Updates which creates FileCopyB. PersonB Changes and Updates which creates FileCopyC. Changes made by PersonA to create FilecopyB are lost due to PersonB Changes. This type of scenario is STOPPED in a Mainframe environment in the same way by using Enqueue/Dequeue (Lock/Unlock) techniques and a Comparison Routine to ensure overwrite/dataloss does not occur AT THE LINE ITEM (RECORD) LEVEL and NOT at the Whole File Level. Your only option is to have BOTH Persons with their OWN copy and Compare/Merge Changes later. Please understand that each person is working at the File Level and NOT on the Line Item Level. That's why they invented DataBases. Maybe you should change to using an SQL Database? edit - Also note that MS INTENTIONALLY did that for the very reason I gave above.

OT, maybe, but since it got brought up way back at post#2690, this Add-on/Extension for Firefox gets rid of that nasty Google Redirect quite nicely! I may quit using IE altogether! https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/google-no-tracking-url/ "The Finder" sidetracked me into "finding" something! BTW, Google (AFAICT) needs to be "allowed" in NoScript to even function. This Extension just scratches out the "extraneous stuff" like the Opera Add-on does. "Just the URL, Ma'am" <-Dragnet

What would you be "saving" by doing it that way? Space requirements are nearly identical, only the FolderName "space" would cause any difference and that would be "used up" by changing other files, correct?
-
OK, link I gave has somewhat confusing "acronyms" for Pinout. Dencorso's picture and Jaclaz' link is more "correct". Your Connector has only two items lacking (Pin#9/Pin#10) that are (probably) irrelevant (as Dencorso points out). A "full 10-pin" adapter has a "plug" in the Pin#9 position and an actual "Hole" in Pin#10 position to prevent EXACTLY what Dencorso is warning you about, somewhat akin to the "later" IDE and Floppy cable connectors. BEWARE if your Connector is one of the "oddball" reversed-connector-adapters (like some older Tyan MoBo's).

This Sound Card? http://www.amazon.com/CREATIVE-LABS-SoundBlaster-Sound-CT2980/dp/B004571LK2 The Wikipedia link I gave claims it's a Vibra16 ISA PnP Value (no bass/treble). Look here - http://www.dosgames.com/forum/about772-15.html and scroll down about 2/3 of a screen (or "find" the string "ct2980")... still a Vibra16... CD-ROM won't be recognized in MS-DOS or going to DOS-Mode without EXACTLY what the MS Article said. You'll have to CREATE a "DOSSTART.BAT" as it (AFAICR) doesn't exist by default. If, however, under MS-Windows the CD-ROM is recognized, you don't want to change AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS. Some tips here - By what method did you Install from the CD-ROM? A Boot Floppy? Look at the contents of the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT using Notepad for an example. edit - AAAAAND some info on using the Sound Card in DOS - Best bet for Bass/Treble - forget the Sound Card controlling them and try to find some Speakers with "knobs" on them. I use a set that also has a Volume Knob on it.

For what it's worth, the German nLite site is gone but this forum still exists - http://www.win-lite.de Maybe it would help signing up there as well. Between here and there you may get best results.

My thanks as well. Looks like our assistance was worthwhile after all.

AFAIK, the Vibra chip-based does not have Treble/Bass. I had a couple and recycled them. Actually, I had a whole MESS of Creative's. Sorry... (edit - forgot to mention - I DO have the Vibra drivers.) Scroll down and avoid the (Vibra) ones listed - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_Blaster_16 FWIW, I could dig through my drivers to see which ones (models) I had (may still have) that do support the controls. Still, you'd have to find the hardware. HTH

As -X- said. No, you're not a @#$%.... Edited first post for clarification (third paragraph)... no longer "clear as mud".

Yep, that's Junkware!

All kinds of stuff! Maybe even the PC/X-Box! DON'T-DO-IT!!! Connect the speakers to ONE SOURCE ONLY! Period! Did you not see #2 above? Or go ahead and do it! Your hardware! (Don't say you weren't warned...)

In addition, the "THE SKY IS FALLING!!!" poster fails to note that there are two other options (probably more complete). (WOW! First post to come and SCREAM!) Fair warning again given - do NOT mix this one with the OTHER projects! Please ALSO note that Autopatcher include many (MANY) Optional Components (IE6, DX9, etc) that this one does NOT! SESP3 is a "repackaged" set of Updates requiring no other Optionals to be installed. THIS package falls more in line with Autopatcher methods and WILL require other Packages to be installed FIRST! This also explains the "size" differences. Reference the sticky "Complete List Of Hotfixes" for more information. As the Old Crusader said in Indiana Jones "Choose wisely...". (Sky not falling, move along folks, nothing to see here...)

For anyone finding this post, it does go somewhat beyond the scope of the tutorial. HOWEVER, this is a legitimate (and little known) Update and the Repack is correct and only replaces the file with the "Update" file. Please note that it is not an "Official" MS WMP11 Installation but will react (e.g. your OS must be Genuine) as the Original does (the single file inside ONLY has been updated). If you so desire, you may use this file instead of the "wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe" BUT (a VERY big but) be aware that it MUST be chosen for Integration BEFORE the OTHER WMP11 "EXE" Update Files as the File Date will NOT follow the Tutorial Rules laid out per "sorting/selecting". note - don't bother looking for the "replacement" file - it's name is not what you think and it's "rare" to be found.

Your PC Specs - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c00068941 Inside is the link to your Motherboard - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00064822&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en You need Sound Drivers for this You need Network Drivers for this Don't confuse Chipset for OTHER devices/chips. Normal sequence of Install - 1 - Chipset (the "board") 2 - Video 3 - Other Devices Your MoBo Manual is here - www.elhvb.com/mboards/oem/hp/manual/ (scroll to dom_manual.pdf) Read here - http://www.elhvb.com/mboards/oem/HP/index.html Scroll down and see the notation for your Mobo - Yours is the Diablo (see first link). NOTE: The Manual given says "nForce 3 250" whereas the HP site says "nForce 3 150 SPP", so... A list of nForce Chipset variations - http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/chipsets/Nvidia/ Chipset drivers - ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/ Seeing none for less than Win2k other than Ver. 4.20 and 2.41. No clue if these are good for YOUR ChipSet. Notice I said SET - that means NorthbridgeChip+SouthbridgeChip - that is VERY important to know BOTH. YOURS says it's an "SPP". Edit - from the Package you tried to use - I'm thinking these are useless to you. Better to find the Vid/Pid of the devices and/or look for the Namse given form HP site (I also supplied them above). Now we know what a "Forceware Unified Driver" means (note - they ALL say nVidia inside the INF's).This is the one you must have used - http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_win9x_4.27

Gee, just to chime in... Didn't I completely describe that in your other thread? You would have been MUCH safer sticking to the single Topic to resolve ALL of your Windows 95 "Several Questions". Heck, you even opened another thread in reference to CD-ROM Drivers! Ta-ta!!!

Something installed later on? RESTART.EXE can be "called" from any number of other places - within a CMD, amother EXE, etc. Those may be "kcicked off" from a Registry entry. You assumed too much. Nuke And Pave shouldn't cause a (the) problem. Simply turn off Auto Updates, disconnect from the Internet, Use Add/remove to remove the HP Junkware (e.g. their version of "AutoUpdates") and any Trialware that they may have installed (Office, Norton, etc), reconnect to Internet and proceed to MS-Update your Installation, THEN install any "Additional" software. I've done this procedure a number of times and had absolutely no problems. BE AWARE that you don't want to DESTROY the "Recovery Partitions" - leave them alone! They are the SOURCE of the DVD's to be created AND provide a Method of "Re-Nuke And Pave" from HDD (find manual and read).

You ARE aware that if you apply all Hotfixes after SP2 that you, in essence, installed SP3? Are you trying to say that those Devices worked with SP2-Only and Hotfixes broke it?
-
1 - Yes. 2 - Probably not as long as BOTH weren't turned on simultaneously. Connect only one Power Source to speakers at a time or insert an appropriate switching mechanism.
-
I am breaking your question into two parts - 1 - Yes, I did - there are OTHER "CAB" files ("Add-ons") created OTHER than Windows Media Player, aren't there? They are created AT RUN TIME and WILL have Current Date and are totally UNRELATED to WMP11/IE8 and are therefore irrelevant to the procedure. See "Preparation Step#10" 2 - You are to Manually Download the Both the MediaPlayer-11 Installer -AND- ORIGINAL MediaPlayer "EXE" Updates! The Updates are "Multi-Version" (WMP9, WMP10, WMP11) and the CAB ones had the WMP10/WMP11files and code STRIPPED and are USELESS for the WMP11. The CAB Add-on's are designed SPECIFICALLY for WMP9 and must be REMOVED if you are Integrating WMP11. In addition, the "WMP11 Slipstreamer" doesn't use Add-on's (AFAIK) but rather the ORIGINAL ones! nLite does NOT INTEGRATE the Originals (or WMP10/WMP11 Installer) properly BECAUSE they are "Multi-Version". I prefer to not further explain any rationale of the procedure or idiosyncrasies of nLite. This would be a repeat of information elsewhere on MSFN and is inappropriate for this TUTORIAL. It is akin to asking "Why do I glue the propeller onto the front of the model airplane?" - Irrelevant to the Instructions. Please bear in mind this Tutorial is for BOTH WMP11 and IE8 and NOTHING ELSE as I had stated. Doing EITHER (not BOTH) is up to you to and you may alter the instructions accordingly. Bluntly, use the instructions exactly and tell me if it worked. Do not do anything other than that. If you do, open a topic referencing the "additional" things you did. I do not address them here. The instructions are not complicated. They are simply lengthy and detailed. "Do it and it works".

How do you slipstream drivers into a custom Win98SE install disc?
submix8c replied to mrbigmouth502's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Not much to it... More for OEM-type "unattended" install. All it really does is "point" to a predefined HDD Folder where a given PC's Hardware Drivers have been stored. It involves a "specialized" set of BAT scripts to pre-FDISK and Format a HDD Partition, copy the Install Folder and Drivers (maybe some add-on software/updates), put into the Registry (after Base Install) a few RunOnce Registry settings (for the add-on software/updates). The Drivers are (in the scripts) copied along with the Install Folder (e.g. WIN98) before the "SETUP.EXE" is run and the "SETUP.EXE" simply uses the MSBATCH.INF to determine "what to do" and "where are the added drivers". Basically, the easy way is to just make a New CD with the Drivers in the WIN98 folder. The Boot Image would need modified to point to a BAT script to pre-Fdisk (with some kind of tool), Format, and Copy (xxcopy maybe?) the WIN98 Folder (drivers and all) to another Folder on the already-formatted Partition and "kick off" the SETUP.EXE. Pretty much doing what Option#1 is but "automated" via BAT script(s). You'll also need a Floppy Image Editor to extract the AUTOEXEC.BAT for modifying (to maybe point to the CD's Install Script). The FULL Unattended method gets "complicated". You may not want to go there (I don't and recant the suggestion) as the discussion will be a can-of-worms. I REALLY have to ask... What do you mean "Custom Win98SE Install Disk"? You want to MAKE one from an OEM/Retail/Upgrade CD? If so, then you ARE getting into "Full Unattended". There was a topic some years ago but it's been removed for various reasons (do NOT ask!). Indeed, your "request" is going above and beyond the Win98SE Unofficial SP3. I WILL provide my own "MSBATCH.INF" (sans KEY) but after that, have a good time! Again, TOO COMPLEX! It COULD be simplified (down to the Basics), but I'm not so inclined because of the long drawn-out explanations it would entail. MSBATCH_INF.zip -
