  1. Totally dead battery? Bad power supply connection? (Just thoughts...)
  2. Hmmm... Wonder if an NEC/Renesas USB3 driver would work (after alter the INF)? Also look here (USB3) - http://www.station-drivers.com/index.php/listes-constructeurs/72-nec-renesas
  3. OK... First - RAID??? On 98SE??? Second - ONLY a Driver can be installed this way - NOT any accompanying Support Programs (eg Nvidia Control Panel). Support Programs MUST be installed via RunOnce (after reboot) -OR- Manually! An example of this is Audio for ALC Package has BOTH the Driver AND the SoundManagerSoftware/AVrack that I had to extract them separately. Third - What the heck do you have with so MANY combos? IF any Driver File/Module has a SAME NAME, then you WILL get a Mix-And Match and FAILURE! Take a look at the "README.TXT" file in the link I gave for some more specifics on the INF mods necessary. Also, it would be REALLY nice to know WHAT is showing up as "Unknown Device" and/or those with "?" next to them in Devicer Manager in ADDITION to what your Hardware is. "Install Crashes" doesn't tell me anything. Working "in the dark" here... Slightly O/T - I used my personal UBCD ISO/CD in a VM and it works flawlessly.
  4. I'll provide a little assist with your Source files later (will edit this Post). NOW we know why you have that file. Please note that I was also one that assisted soporific on two projects. (See Autopatcher 98SE thread, and note that the MSBATCH is from UBCD98SE and that thread has been removed.) Rationale? Simply a "clean" source, since USP specifically states the Install Sequence AND Requirements (NO OTHER UPDATE PACKS). You COULD have some extraneous files in it. edit - Drivers are are different subject. I'll try to help, since the UBCD thread is gone (do NOT ask why, just accept it). The Driver Packages from the Vendor would need "unpacked AND certain INF files may need modified for the MSBATCH to find them AND the general method is to COPY them to HDD (from CD) for the MSBATCH to point to. There is a method via a BAT file (AFAICR). edit2 - Lucky you! Here they are (archived from Soporific/MDGx website)! This is the Original Driver Pack thread here - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/98369-driver-packs-for-windows-959898seme/ NOTE that the Installation STILL requires the "method". We'll get to that but this will give you an idea (the files are self-extracting RAR's). win98se_files.txt
  5. "Patch Thursday" Oh, and to note the testing/comparing done? http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171707-ms-to-release-patch-for-ie-bug-including-windows-xp/ Seems that the XP one is the same as 2K3 (not at "EoS"). IN-YOUR-FACE! (heh...) ...and an edit (I edited the above to reiterate MSFN link too) - Guess everyone has been disregarding 2K3 "fixes"? Uh-huh, just focus on Client OS! Kind of justifies the "potential" (only) for 2K3->XP Unofficial Fixes, IMHO. edit2 - re ArsTechnica - continued support for XP? Unlikely...
  6. @dencorso - Thanks for watching for it + the links. @MagicAndre1981 - Generally speaking, it's irrelevant. EOS has happened and this is an IE issue, not an XP issue. XP has already "pushed" IE8 at everyone long ago. Note dencorso's comment. Also, MS "marketing" will prevail against the "masses". @ND22&5eraph - Please note that Server2K3 (RTM files dated 03/25/2003 to be exact) came out well after XP (RTM files dated 08/23/2001 to be exact). The SP's between them slightly lag (XP-SP1a at files approx. 03/31/2003 coinciding with 2K3 RTM / XP-SP3=Apr2008 & 2K3-SP2=Feb2007) and understanding that SERVERS ("difficult" to upgrade) are more critical than CLIENTS ("easy" to upgrade), also noting an SP3 was NEVER released for 2K3 (which would have been dated beyond XP-SP3). So don't you think it's natural that 2K3 will have support for one more year? @-X- DOH! Now you have to update the UDC script! And thanks dencorso/-X- for info/testing. @All - Merry Belated Christmas from MS!
  7. HUH??? Why would it be there on a "raw" (untouched) 98SE CD? It's actually UNCOMPRESSED inside of WIN98_63.CAB. Something funny going on here. Is that after your "slipstream"? (working on this "problem" now.) I repeat - WHAT command? Is this something that you've added via RunOnce?
  8. Well, that's an odd title! Be aware that some of those floppies are still used to IML the AMDAHL/IBM/etc Mainframes, something that the author fails to understand. AFAIKR, the IML code on the floppies is used once and the drive can subsequently be used to store/retrieve data just like any other peripheral. And there's no real "magic" involved in it - simple IBM OS-based I/O. (Yes, I have worked on those beasts before.) FUD...
  9. May I ask (in addition to the post suggestion by Drugwash above)... ...WHAT command? As to Drugwash's suggestion, -however- the slipstream works, test it out by simply placing it in the WIN98/Install folder before CD/DVD "burn (or whatever method you use). -Usually- a given file in the Install Folder overrides one within a CAB file. At first opportunity, I'll do a test case to see what the problem may be as it only runs under 98SE(?). edit - odd! According to this (yes, I "spoiled" it due to potential forum "problems") even though thishttp://www.htasoft.com/u98sesp/ clearly indicates "Semi-slipstreaming support" (whatever that means).
  10. Jody, I posted several times before the one you quoted. My response in that particular one was to indicate that it was IMHO PRYING, as It -is- absolutely NOBODY'S business what OS I'm -currently- running, even if it was a Linux flavor. Further, (as was stated above) this topic is redundant and I provided a Google that would have ceased what I considered TROLLING, if anyone bothered to see tha SPX posted in another topic of the same sort (2011) before creating this Topic and it was 2008 when the LAST posting was done prior to that. Yes, I said TROLLING, as this is what it appeared to be. 1 - I -requested- the topic be closed (getting out of hand) but it wasn't. Fine, not my decision. 2 - If SPX had bothered to look, they would have found I triple-boot this machine and have a Win7Pro machine next to me as well as several other various operational/non-operational machines, including using VPC to test scenarios to either assist a member her -or- learn something myself. IOW, I have (nearly) ALL MS OS' (back to 5150/PCjr DOS). Satisfied? 3 - Odd that you TROLLED (yes, I said it again) this Topic to attack me (for no apparent reason) when jaclaz as well has "irritated" you, the difference being jaclaz uses sarcasm while I do not. ...IMNSHO... BTW, review this Topic and tell me again about attitudes. "Nuff Said!" http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171538-windows-nt-4-performance/ And may I thank you for paying so much attention to me thus placing some sort of importance upon my meager existence. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=forums&module=extras&section=boardrules --- Mods, I apologize for being (once again) "argumentative", BUT this is absolutely ridiculous (i.e. pointless)! May I consider myself duly warned (for simply responding)? --- @All - have a great Thursday! I have other things to do today, like get a 5th birthday present for my grandson.
  11. Not Maximus-Decim Driverpack... It's Maxumus-Decim Native USB Drivers. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/43605-maximus-decim-native-usb-drivers/ AFAIK, everyone that uses 9x/ME (mostly) uses the package. Here's another topic directly related to USB Drivers (and link to newer NUSB and some Alternatives) - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171620-usb-flash-drivers-for-98se/ HTH
  12. @Explorer09 - DUDE! Why here in this thread? Additionally, you commented in the UDC for April 2014 thread. Do you even USE these tools (e.g. HFSLIP/nLite)? (as the member complains/uses "open source" solutions...) http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171540-xp-eol-post-sp3-updates-downloader-udc-released-xdottk/ Everything you always wanted to know about the IExplorer FUD and How to Counter It - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171674-mass-hysteria-on-the-interwebs/ HTH
  13. ??? I prefer open-source solutions. And for IE8 I already made up my own solution. For .NET, I can't.Your "open source" includes JAVA (not open source), so what's the difference if the software is FREE? You could (with more difficulty) use the ORCA and related Tools for the MSI/MSP "merge". Indeed, your IE8 "solution" doesn't appear to be an "integrated" as it seems to be Post-Install, rather than Direct.
  14. 1 - MSBATCH.INF requires some manually added parameters that the "MSBATCH 98" program doesn't add. These are more OEM-oriented and the program doesn't do them "properly". Here is a "sample" that would need modified. Compare it to yours. It also indicates a method of adding Drivers. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/149231-trying-to-use-infinst-to-add-drivers-to-win-98-install/page-2 2 - I have no clue as to Slipstreaming the USP. I haven't actually tested it yet, even though I have the file. 3/4/5 - See -1- above 6 - The second way (also see -1- above) HTH
  15. Two places - http://www.msfn.org/_/software/vulnerability-in-internet-explorer-could-allow-remote-code-execution-r9011 http://www.msfn.org/_/software/internet-explorer-exploit-leaves-xp-users-high-and-dry-r9012 And as I noted in the last link I provided - WOW! Note the links I gave within - the intended target (an assumption on their part?) is NOT "consumers". The Vulnerability is ONLY if you're downright STUPID and click a link to ANYWHERE! I wonder what Malware Defender softwares will do about it (or CAN do)? Funny that this came out AFTER XP was EOS. "QUICK! Dump XP NOW! Disregard the fact that the Marketshare is HIGH! DUMP IT!" FUD galore... edit (@xt guy) - You mean these about MSE? http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171498-need-microsoft-security-essentials-grab-it-now/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171659-bug-in-microsoft-security-essentials-downs-windows-xp-machines/ --- These MS "treats" keep coming and coming.
  16. Not necessarily O/T (ref in particular the links inside) - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171674-mass-hysteria-on-the-interwebs/
  17. (sigh...) http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171670-internet-explorer-bug-puts-quarter-of-web-users-at-risk/ Thx for the further info, though. @Trip -
  18. Might I interject here? Asking for help -or- providing setup/install/version info on a given product/software seems like being WAAAAY off-topic. Anyone needing help installing or questions on installing (e.g. Opera - see previous post) you should make a NEW Topic for it. This is not the place to do that and your question MAY not be even noticed -and- it clutters up the primary Topic. Please stick to the subject matter "Why do you guys cling to these old OS' 9x->ME (all-inclusive) since you know of all these limitations that I asked you to provide and please specify which OS and what limitation under which circumstance".
  19. I can't help you there. I installed it at one time, discovered where the UL had to be, uninstalled, and -NOW USE IT AS A PORTABLE APP-. In other words, you must UNZIP the ULZ to obtain the UL and plce it IN THAT FOLDER. If the folder does NOT exist, CREATE it first! That's the best it gets. As I said, it is HARD-CODED! Period! How do you run it "portable" without Net Framework? You "install" that, don't you? IOW, you MUST have the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<youruserid>\Local Settings\Application Data\ SOMEWHERE, right?
  20. Agreed! However (from above) of which the "common user" is not. But 2nd link So just don't "go there". Strange wording for this vulnerability, isn't it? edit (@Trip) - That appears to be what they're saying. BUT, maybe there's a possibility since Server 2003 also "comes with IE6" that perhaps it can be obtained and cross-installed?
  21. @buyerninety - Hah Hah! Thinking that he needs a Lobby to grease some palms?
  22. Technet - XP does not have the ADDITIONAL "Stealth Mode" functionality - just the BASE Firewall. Router - It's apparently INHERENT in the ADDITIONAL "Stealth Mode" functionality. Routers have their OWN OS (usually some flavor of Linux) "embedded" ("firmware") in the Chips (similar to a VERY large BIOS). It's as I said about being able to "make your own" Router (see above post). That "OS" is BETWEEN the WWW (your ISP) and your "Computer OS". Again, read those links and THINK about it. I don't see any reason to explain what's already explained in them. FYI, my ATT Gateway's NAT/Router/Firewall DOES have both "Stealth Mode" and an ADDITIONAL check-box SPECIFICALLY to add "PING" underneath the "Stealth" (thus ALSO preventing THAT even WITHIN it). As to the PING being "needed" by the ISP, I could be very wrong ! HTH
  23. Cross-posting this since the subject came up - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171659-bug-in-microsoft-security-essentials-downs-windows-xp-machines/
  24. ??? "Fixed" link? http://www.eweek.com/security/bug-in-microsoft-security-essentials-downs-windows-xp-machines.html Oh, and "seemingly" related - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171498-need-microsoft-security-essentials-grab-it-now/
  25. "Get Microsoft Update" is an option "somewhere" on the Windows Update page. It's an ActiveX that has to be installed. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/700e035c-61b0-4f56-9810-259e1b5db74c/unable-to-switch-from-windows-update-to-microsoft-update?forum=w7itprosecurity I have NOT tried it yet (I have a "base" install of Win7 Pro) BUT I found this notation - http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/network-administrator/windows-update-for-windows-and-other-products-from-microsoft-update/ (note: above link is goobered - add the "-US" to the link to "get there") HTH
