  1. (sigh...) As I had said the Articles via Web Archive says you MUST use Windows Update to get the fix. And MS Update for Win9x/ME is GONE! See Web Archive (faq section) - http://web.archive.org/web/20110912195626/http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms05-002 Take a look here also - http://erpman1.tripod.com/w9xmeupd.html Also read this post and the following one. www.msfn.org/board/topic/84886-the-complete-list-of-hotfixes-updates-for-windows-98se/#entry700843 IOW, the files are no longer available. Worse, they are "modded" (unofficially). From my "copy" of the ANI Cursor fix README.TXT This is from the "U891711". Here is the topic - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/58780-q891711-u891711-unofficial-ms07-017-ms05-002-ani-fix/ There's -another- one (-entirely- different) called "KB891711" that runs as a "service". Contents are "KB891711.EXE" and "Q891711.DLL" (both inside the "fix" package" along with REG entries to cause the Service to run. And FWIW, (believe it or not) here's the link to this one (English) http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/windows98-kb891711-v2-enu_27519b9f8157c1e9a52e443b0208e0e.exeAs you can see, there's a "generated" filename, so just changing the language won't "fix" the download. Note that this is the Windows Update website address. In addition, if you look at this (Unofficial SE Service Pack) http://www.htasoft.com/w98se_post_usp4/copy_of_sesp30b4-en.txtYou'll see this Basically, you're asking for Japanese versions of obsolete/modified Fixes. Generally speaking, we're -extremely- lucky to have access to English fixes (e.g. the last Autopatcher/UBCD). Unofficial 98SE SP3 is also -just- English. HTH (although not really)
  2. DESKTOP.INI - research that a little. e.g. (my own for user-id SkyKing "My Documents") [DeleteOnCopy]Owner=SkyKingPersonalized=5PersonalizedName=My DocumentsJust change the "PersonalizedName" part to an ?Italian? string (if that's what you mean). Each "Desktop.ini" in each folder has one for each User-Id. How you would do that for an Install I have no clue -or- where that comes from when creating a New Profile. HTH
  3. I have no clue, really. However, I found a cross-reference for Languages here - http://old.winpack.org/petr/win98_internat_fixes.html Please note that the one you specified is an UNOFFICIAL one! That means MS did NOT issue it but it was "assembled" by an MSFN (probably) member! Using "web.archive.org" any MS Bulletin (e.g. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS05-002.mspx) may be redirected to your language thusly - http://www.microsoft.com/japan/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-002.mspx See the inserted Language? Any Download -may- have the following changed (the appended language) e.g. - &DisplayLang=en -to- &DisplayLang=ja Any KB article -may be changed thusly - anywhere "en-us" is in the website address just change to "ja-ja" In that particular case (Q891711/KB891711), it specifically states that the Update would have to come from MS Updates. In other words, those listed as downloadable (if they still exist) were obtained (probably) by members and assembled accordingly. Sorry, but that's the best it gets. You're WAY too late to get any help, since many/most downloads have been obliterated from the MS website, as is many/most articles/downloads for anything LESS than Windows Vista. You see, Microsoft is "cleaning house" right now. HTH and, again, Sorry edit - and read this - http://forum.deviantart.com/technology/software/1639753/
  4. So, if I'm getting this right... The Acer Laptop MoBo is "made" by "Compal" so its BIOS (not Asus?) does NOT have those options, so they're screwed? But... it -seems- that the BIOS allows for the setting. Why wouldn't setting those options (-if- they exist) allow for it? I was under the impression that the "non-standard" (missing options) ones were those that -prevented- the installation. What would be the difference between an XP and a Win2k Install that prevents 2k installation? I -am- aware that -some- have a "something" embedded in the BIOS for a particular "type" of OS allowable. Would that be it? (in a learning curve, here)
  5. In the US (see Wiki link) - a non-gounded wall socket CANNOT be gounded with JUST the TWO connections (old style). This is the "you can plug into it either way" type. BUT it's not gounded. To Grounf, a THORD wire (usually copper/aluminum) is run LITERALLY to the Earth Ground (read that as the dirt outside). At that time, you SHOULD (as in the sound tech example given) ensure that the 2-prong plug is inserted the correct direction (HUMMMMMM!!!!!!! or not...). NEWISH wall sockets (and corresponding plugs) allow a single directin and one "flat prong" is larger than the other (old style) width for morons in the US. There are adapters that we use (we call "ground lift") we plug into the NEW style and do NOT connect the "ground" part. That appears to be your "missing component". Be aware I had a Tangent Mixer that was apparently purchased in GB and had 240V set in the PSU and it "blew" half of the supply. Moron tech at the sound shop "replaced" the wole thing with a "box" and yanked the REAL stuff from the mixer. When I got the schematics from him I looked them over and discovered his error (or intentiona to get MY parts). Parts were gone (he said). Two wires do not a grounded plug make (AFAIK). I see two prongs. Where's the ground (3d leg)? Polarization (in above Wiki)? You're power suplly - how does it connect to the wall socket - an adapter or direct ("special" German-style)? Sorry, it makes no sense to me (U.S.A. 120v/240v typer person). My "understanding" is than only in USA is 120v used (hence the GB mixer example above).
  6. YOWCH! Nonetheless, phase matters, no? That was the point... So... what IS the "socket" there, Dogway? (see jaclaz' link or whatever...)
  7. http://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2014/07/02/microsoft-gives-up-control-of-no-ip-websites-it-wiped-off-the-web/
  8. I don't understand your question. Read this - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/46349-98se2me-killer-replacements-me-98-se/ ...and rephrase your question, please. Right out of the Installer. I don't understand why you would have any problems. Which of the above options are you wanting?
  9. FYI, just because a technician said the outlets are grounded doesn't mean they are connected correctly. For example, in the U.S. this is the correct wiring. Note that as a sound engineer we've run into the non-ground wires (white/green) are sometimes inadvertantly reversed and we have to use ground lifts (un-gound, not good but works) and hopefully find a separate line fuse/breaker line that -is- correct for the power supplies at FOH. http://inspectapedia.com/electric/Electrical_Outlet_Wire_Connections.php I'm betting that even in Europe the same rules apply. This is a "tool" we use to check them before we even hook up. I carry mine to every gig. http://www.leadmask.com/klein-elec-test-rt200.html?gclid=CLf1ou-_qb8CFQeHaQod55QAvg Note that the outlets -do- work, just bass-ackwards (phase-reversal) and you can't have (e.g.) FOH Power on a "reversed" outlet, connect the wiring to the mixer/rack and have the mixer/rack connected to the "correctly wired" outlet because of the all-heck-breaks-loose, including ZAP-touch at the microphones. You might want to have those outlets checked again for -proper- EU wiring. HTH
  10. @oatbox and @all-others Now do you understand? Thank you loblo. I will point to this topic when the subject comes up (again). We are beating this one to death! Face it, folks, that's the reason. Live with the occasional failure -or- upgrade the OS that will allow for a Browser that supports it. Simple as that. HTH
  11. Also look here - http://reboot.pro/forum/91-win7pe/ Particularly here - http://win7pe.winbuilder.net/ These are (basically) "LiveWin7" projects like (basically) "LiveXP" projects, built using WinBuilder. HTH
  12. Yup! Those are undoubtedly the ones (of many others) that do NOT work with older Flash Player. Again, so sorry. The only other alternative to play those is a newer OS that allosw for newer Flash Player. HTH
  13. This - http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/8-windows-9x-me/ ...has this - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/95815-important-stickified-pinned-959898-seme-topics/ Which has exactly two Topics on the subject. You'd be amazed that so many users have nGig of RAM installed. I have 2GiB myself. It's not as hard as you think. HTH (ehhh... schwups beat me to it) Do a little looking (very fast) first. Revisit this topic IF you have problesm. But I bet you won't. P.S. If you find no need to ask any more in THIS topic, do come back and say it's SOLVED by using the other topic help.
  14. Seriously, folks! Stop cluttering this Topic and post just... Suggestions!
  15. (sigh...) You didn't read the links, did you? M-E-T-R-O! Period! The WMC is NOT an "APP" (duh!), it LITERALLY changes your OS by ADDING the appropriate SOFTWARE, just like the DIFFERENCE between XP Pro and XP MCE and DOES require a brand-spanky-new-key! You CAN NOT add XP MediaCenter to XP Pro either! Why do you think the Media Center is NOT available to lesser Windosw 7? Same reason - Additional Software (DIFFERENT OS Edition) using a different key. It LITERALLY makes it a DIFFERENT EDITION (NOT an "app")! Give it up, dude, ain't honna happen! Fork over the $10 and "upgrade" from Win8 Pro to Win8 MCE. At least you don't have to reinstall like previous Windows. HTH and goodbye.
  16. The problem is the Adobe Flash Player. The last one to run/work on 98SE has real heartburn with YouTube since most (if not all) require a later version than will work on 98SE, regardless of KeX. YouTube isn't the only website afflicted with this malady. Sorry, you may be out of luck (unless someone else chimes in). Google this youtube 98se site:msfn.org HTH
  17. Weird part is that they never "killed" Win9x/ME that fast after EOS. They must want people to dump (one of) the best OS they ever made. Sad part is, even Vista/7 is being "hidden" from the main pages so they can push that POS Win8 stuff. "Your OS are belong to us!"
  18. Related (Windows 8)? http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/9fd4d6d5-1adc-494d-a916-0032f3e08789/remote-desktop-client-on-windows-8-drop-connection edit - finding an "update" when searching "rdp 8" "ipv6" "windows 7"here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2923545 Please note that I've found "recommendations" to -not- use IPv6. (also ) (from stupid Experts Exchange)
  19. GHAK!!! Follow-up - http://windowsitpro.com/security/microsoft-forced-discontinue-email-notification-system-security-alerts Restates what you said but leaves an implication. Wonder if this is just Canadian recipients?
  20. OK, I'm confused. That's $10 for the Media Center part for Windows 8.0 (NOT 8.1 - the first link indicated that). Are you saying you already HAVE it and it sucks? It's a totally separate license (AFAICT). This implies the Version (8.0 vs 8.1) is irrelevant for Media Center - http://searchenterprisedesktop.techtarget.com/answer/How-to-add-Windows-81-Media-Center-to-Windows-8-Pro-after-the-fact I also gave a link to an article indicating that Metro (compatibility) is what prevents anything other than Win8 MC to be used. Alternatives? http://www.howtogeek.com/132462/5-alternatives-to-windows-media-center-on-windows-8/ Guess you're out of luck (no transplanting a chicken liver to a goose). edit - errr.... an Upgrade of/to Win8 apparently has a MC flaw anyway... http://heavysoil.net/windows-8-pro-with-media-center-what-a-mess/ Don't work on an Upgrade version of Win8 according to that.
  21. Can we assume IE8 works OK? Googling "internet explorer 9" "usp10.dll"yields some inteesting notations on AntiVirus and even Spybot. However, they refer to Win7. Assuming you have SP2 installed? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/system-requirements I don't currently have my Win7 box hooked up to check anything, but -assume- that it's the same IE9 that would be installed?
  22. @jaclaz - I was still getting info so the previous post was edited. BE AWARE that that silly D2D will HORK YOU! That particular "function" is an OEM-specific BIOS alteration. Stupid Dell (that E521 dorrstop) has it too. Bottom line is that the OP doesn't understand what they have. D2D will SPECIFICALLY enable some silly MBR code for "Press F(whatever) To Restore" which will "point" to the Recover Parition. That's the reason I questioned the "Four Partitions" statement. Indeed, the OP has given VERY little to go on. I have found an EM250 manual that has the same "F2->Main" where the settings are (as well as the additional references given above). InsydeH20 has absolutely (AFAIK) nothing to do with the "problems". * - BEFORE any of the below, exactly HOW are you trying to install? USB, External DVD, WHAT? (those bad boys do NOT have a DVD drive). Crystal ball non-functional today. 1 - TURN OFF D2D 2 - TURN OFF AHCI 3 - Make a LiveUSB and BACK UP the MBR and FIX IT to be compatible with 2K/XP (you know the drill, jaclaz) 4 - FORMAT the first Partition (NOTE: that partition COULD BE the Original Boot/Recover/UTILITIES Partition!) 5 - INSTALL the Win2K WITH the aforementioned Big HDD "fix" (you have been given what to do). * - NO CLUE what's pre-existing on the HDD. XP/Win7? WHAT? HTH (Hit The Head)
  23. So... I'm confused. AnX suggests that InsydeH20 is the problem. I've found that XP has been PreInstalled. http://www.engadget.com/products/emachines/em350/specs/ Please tell me exactly HOW XP can be installed but 2K can't? Is there a particular reason, AnX? I have found the Service Manual for the (made by Acer) E350. It indicates a D2D Recovery setting in the BIOS - TURN IT OFF and LEAVE IT OFF! It gives no indication of the settings for IDE Configuration, BUT I'm willing to bet that you can TURN OFF Sata-Mode. Start from this post and read down a couple of posts. It appears that there IS a setting for turning AHCI off. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/107504-integration-of-intels-sata-ahci-and-raid-drivers/#entry1028295 I'm not sure where, but it MUST exist! BTW, you WILL have to "wipe the disk" (not really wiped, but...) using "diskpart clean" on it to re-initiate the HDD. NOTICE! You have inducated FOUR PARTISIONS! I'm willing to bet that you DO HAVE THE STOCK OEM INSTALL ON IT!!! That, in and of itself, will cause you some headaches (ref. D2D notation above). HERE is a notation about IDE-Mode by a guy that had Win7 Pr-Installed and "downgraded" to XP. http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/emachines-3502303-windows-7-to-windows-xp/191142.html So... I don't get it? edit - Here's the Support page - http://www.emachines.com/ec/en/US/content/drivers Select "Netbook->Netbook->350" It clearly indicates both (32-bit) Win7 and XP. Both D2D and SATA Mode options should be right there on the MAIN screen. Motherboard is "Acer LA-6311P NAV51"
  24. It seems that you want to get something for "free", similar to getting XP-Pro features onto XP-Home "hacks". Seemingly, it won't work anyway. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/get-the-windows-8-media-center-pack-for-free-but-be-prepared-to-wait/ ...leads to this - http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/05/03/making-windows-media-center-available-in-windows-8.aspx ...which implies Metro compatibility. And this is the link to the "package" - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/feature-packs Windows 8.x Editions? http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/bloggingwindows/archive/2012/04/16/announcing-the-windows-8-editions.aspx It seems that you don't have Windows 8.x Pro, right? http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/products-and-technologies/windows-8-1/compare/default.aspx
