So glad you FINALLY gave the specific model# of HDD. My brother bought the EXACT SAME ONE in 2008 "open box" sale. Western Digital Caviar Blue SE. From the Documentation (2079-001026.pdf): You do not have a 48-bit Controller. Do you think this may imply a DDO? I think so... And the Picture is there...You're going to use HDAT2? BEFORE JUMPING THE GUN, TRY THE DOCUMENTATION FIRST!!!! I got all of it for my brother. YOU TAKE THE RISK OF HOSING YOUR HDD!!! MB/MiB/GB/GiB Calculator to help understand. BTW, I have a Compaq EVO here with a BIOS limitation and it does "weird" 240-head instead of the "standard" 255-head so even a 40GB HDD had to be WIPED to start over. I just got a WD1600BB (similar) that "hits the wall" I will test the WD Tools (DDO) on it to see if it will function correctly. PLEASE NOTE that a DDO does NOT correct the BIOS, it simply "enhances" it and DOES NOT overcome the Win9x 48-bit LBA problem - MUST PATCH THE OS.

Missing or not succesfully loaded functions in DLL's
submix8c replied to Comos's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Come ON!!! Some of you "new guys" are getting THE EXACT ANSWER and insist on ANOTHER one! Win95 does NOT have all the "functions" that Win98SE has because - IT HAS BEEN ADDED (NEWER OS) and the "Checker" (Total Commander) NOTES THAT THEY ARE DIFFERENT - AND The PROGRAM (WinAmp in this case) HAS CODE TO CJHECK WHETHER OS=WIN95 -OR- OS=WIN98SE. The "Checker" has NO CLUE about the CODE only the FUNCTIONS! Your question has been answered - TWICE! The "Plugin" IS NOT RELEVANT - it's FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY! There IS NO IDIOSYNCRASY! The DIFFERENCE is in the OS and I SAID THAT!!!! DUH DUH DUH!!! -
Missing or not succesfully loaded functions in DLL's
submix8c replied to Comos's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Listing for Winamp? Some programs "detect" what OS and call functions for that OS only. IOW, the SAME Program will run on multiple OS. Just because a "function" is missing doesn't mean that it will be used. You need only check when a Program actually FAILS to determine what's "missing". "Seems to work fine"... right? Then you have no problem... -
http://dmp.free.fr/telecharg/flopimage/ Look for DLGMAKER.EXE - When run, it will create a WD DLG Diagnostics Disk (Version 2.8). This is the last known WD tool that makes a usable Overlay. I do NOT know if it will work with a HDD that size. Please note that DDO's are put in the Master Boot Record (1st sector and maybe 2nd, etc?) and you DARE not use "FDISK /MBR" or ANY other utility that writes to the MBR or the OS will no longer boot. The DDO can be "uninstalled" with the Floppy as well. Info/Warning and links from Microsoft (some links inside are no good). More info/a link HTH and good luck!

Highest BIOS (haven't tried the links): http://www.wimsbios.com/forum/topic10054.html Appears that a 32/64GB limit exists (maybe 120gb)? No "custom" BIOS for it. Do you understand DDO? Vendors of Hard Disks supply a SOFTWARE work-around for use on boards that don't support it. These do the job JUST FINE! There are various versions of the ASUS P2B - which ONE? What SPECIFICALLY is the HDD. You're answers are NOT specific. Have you actually used the External HDD on it? IOW, does it HAVE a "controller" in the enclosure (which BYPASSES the BIOS)? THEORETICALLY, as long as you have that "latest BIOS" it may misrepresent the actual size (being limited) but still be functional, although maybe not with DOS/Win9x, e.g. with WinXP after Boot to a within-range partition, will continue to function, ignoring the BIOS (AFAICR).
-
What's the MoBo Make/Model (you didn't say)? There are "patched" BIOS for some older ones (not TOO old). You could use a HDD DDO (Dynamic Disk Overlay) from the Manufacturer (you didn't say what Make/Model of it either).

http://static.libsyn.com/p/assets/8/a/6/b/8a6b33a4237fddf9/FbR632.gif Market Share I use Symantec. I don't say it's "the best" though. TWICE in SEVEN years and "stopped" both times. 1 - In reference to "default settings", what AV (or any software for that matter) doesn't require "tweaking" 2 - As far as the "space" there is a way to "clean" the "bloat". Got any STATS for space utilization on "the others"? 3 - Extremely opinionated, aren't you? Back on Topic - FALSE FALSE FALSE POSITIVE! Live with it!

PLEASE look up the definition of TROJAN (what McAfee THINKS it is). NOW look up the definition of VIRUS (what YOU think McAfee said it is). NOW download, install, and RUN both 1 - MalwareBytes AND 2 - Spybot. Find anything? NOW go to the 3 - Free Panda Scan. Find anything? You want US to REPEATEDLY do something and YOU have NOT done ANY of those things. NUTZ on that! DO WHAT WAS TOLD (#1, #2, and #3) and report back! PERIOD! Now... KNOCK IT OFF!!!!

SHEESH, dude! Did you even read my posts? I DID THE SAME THING! As for the OP having a virus, the OP willy-nilly chose his findings from the internet and NEVER said they uploaded ANYTHING (or did I really miss that). Those tools I mention WILL identify an "infected" one and even one RELATED to it (in the TEMP/Temp Inet). I have already done battle with these beasts so am knowledgeable else I wouldn't have suggested the "search", tools, or symptoms. The SERVICES.EXE one is a BEAR to get rid of - and it's not even THAT program that's infected! And I must point out (re: the MS link) I said "just to point out" that I was, indeed, pointing out "false positives" (repeatedly)! Try google McAfee-GW-Edition false positiveFAIL! What part of any of this is not being understand? I thought I was very clear in respect to the original "problem" which somehow transmogrified into Firewall Connections Logs (obviously misunderstanding "how stuff works") that were discussed in the OTHER topic. It appears obvious that the OP is testing out a newly minted install along with a brand spanky new router and firewall and going OMG MS HAS VIRUSES AND AM BEING ATTACKED FROM WITHOUT! This must be one of these moments.
-
allen2 - This is just to point out the fallacies that McAfee has - even MS has said it goofs. And again, the ONLY one that sees a "problem" with SVCHOST. Coincidence? I think not. Just because SVCHOST runs services doesn't mean it should be flagged as "suspicious". I stated my opinion of McAfee and I stand by it. If the OP wishes to know "how things work" as opposed to a blatant "MS serves viruses" then they should say so... after an exhaustive internet search doesn't reveal the requested info. However, in this case, I have suggested TWO very good software to reassure them and Panda has a free HDD scan as well. VirusTotal is not the be-all/end-all. Says it all..
-
allen2 - did you miss this (above)? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2025695 I again say it's a failing of McAfee. Heck, that's the ONLY one that "thinks" it's "bad". THAT is what the OP started with - nothing to do with "IP addresses" until the OP's INSISTENCE of a "virus".AGAIN... google said items (above). You'll see what I mean about a REAL Trojan/Virus. AND, I had clearly stated why "traffic" was seen in the OP's other thread. If the OP did not initiate the traffic, then there is a "hidden" Trojan/Virus. http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/svchost-exe-trojan-agent-malware-removal-help.179423/ Notice that it's NOT in the System32 folder? And this was found by just searching "SVCHOST". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svchost To OP - study up on what the program does. Also, if you DON'T believe me, download and run MalwareBytes and Spybot, both EXTREMELY dependable and reputable software. My assertion is that there more than likely is NOT a problem at all and this is a wild goose chase. Again... I'm done. Waste of keystrokes.
-
@allen2 - the crux of the Topic is the assertion that since VirusTotal is using a "bad" Antivirus Definition (see MS Link) that the file is a "virus". This is a false assumption. And again, google both "SVCHOST.EXE" and "SERVICES.EXE" in conjunction with "TROJAN OR VIRUS" and you'll see the CPU-usage symptom and what the REAL culprit will be.
-
Then your CURRENT one has a Trojan/Virus. the REAL one does not do that. In fact, your Trojan/Virus may be in your TEMP folder or "Temporary Internet Files" folder and an entry was put in the Registry to cause SVCHOST.EXE (a real one) to "run" the Trojan/Virus. SVCHOST.EXE is a "driver" (if you will) for Services and of itself does NOT do any "connections" - that's left to the "loaded" program. Look that up, my friend. And if you CONNECT to a website, you will indeed get "connections" shown. I showed that in the other thread about your Router settings. So... you're telling me the HashMyFiles that YOU UPLOADED to VirusTotal says it's a VIRUS? Are you SERIOUS? How about that? I have an older version. Thanks for the tip on that. Oh, and BTW, I do NOT upload files to VirusTotal but I'll be glad to do it if it'll make you happy. ...BWAHAHAH!!!!! Done! Again, McAfee is a POS (look up that acronym)! And I would BET that the Definitions are outdated! DID YOU READ THE MICROSOFT ARTICLE? It SPECIFICALLY names THAT ANTIVIRUS as giving FALSE POSITIVE. GIVE UP, dude, it's NOT that program if you indeed HAVE a Trojan/Virus! Riddle me this, Batman - How can you explain the EXACT SAME FILE giving TWO DIFFERENT RESULTS for the SAME FILE? (Remember the OTHER link?) BTW, the SYMPTOMS of the Trojan/Virus is HIGH CPU USAGE for SVCHOST. Do YOU have that symptom? If not, then YOU ARE IN GOOD SHAPE and more than likely "clean"! LOOK THAT UP, dude! I'm done with this. YOU ARE WRONG!
-
No... "HashMyFiles" doesn't give SHA256 - only SHA1, MD5, CRC32. VirusTotal only uses SHA256. I got SHA256 shown above using this Online one. That's what I cross-checked to VirusTotal (search on the SHA256 - that's how I found the NOT VIRUS link). WHY in the WORLD do you think Microsoft would give a Service Pack with a VIRUS in it? If you downloaded DIRECTLY from Microsoft, IT IS NOT A VIRUS!!!!! The OTHER SHA256 ones at VirusTotal MAY be (and probably are). The ones Listed on VirusTotal (NOT the one with NO VIRUS FOUND) are part of a Trojan as is MANY (and probably all) instances of SERVICES.EXE that are NOT the REAL one (from Microsoft). Bottom line - you can search on nearly ANY Microsoft Program Name and discover SOMEWHERE a case of a Trojan/Virus that is NOT from Microsoft. Try it and see (for example SERVICES.EXE). YOURS IS NOT A VIRUS!!!!! OK? Please stop accusing Microsoft of supplying Viruses and Trojans.

Nope... GCDROM.SYS

???? 1 - Ensure Jumpers are correct between the DVD and the HDD (either HDD should work). 2 - In the BIOS, temporarily Disable the SATA (so Win 98 won't see it AT ALL) 3 - Boot to the 98 CD for Command Prompt (not install) 4 - "CD x:\WIN98" (where X should theoretically be the C, D, or E drive) <--The Install folder 5 - Run FDISK (should be there) and DELETE HDD Partitions (be SURE it's the IDE/ATA/PATA drive you installed) 6 - Reboot to 98 CD and allow Win98 to install This should tell whether 98SE will even run on the PC. Any failures, report back (you can always re-enable the SATA to get to your XP). Side note - be SURE to set the correct Boot Order depending on disabled/enabled Disk Drives.

See other topic - you are wasting my time and many posts... -
Look, Dude, I gave a different song in your other topic. By WHAT method did you slipstream your SP3 in? IF it was via nLite IT WILL NOT WORK more than likely. It has to be a CLEAN source. The topics are a WILD GOOSE CHASE! You first want to "change" in a running system, while asking for "unattended" and you are given the info WITHOUT GIVING HOW YOU DID "STUFF" and expect an answer to "why doesn't it work". MY answer is "VOODOO". There IS such a thing as a "$OEM$" folder, OK???? http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/ Starting a topic "It's broke, how do I fix it" without what LED to the symptom will NOT evoke a good "cure". Go read a little on how to nLite and how Unattended works (links already given repeatedly), try FROM SCRATCH and tell EXACTLY A->Z and we'll be making progress. Now... I'm done...

Did you "install to a HDD Partition" after you changed it? Well? I'm waiting... -
Seriously, it was heart-felt...
-
So... did you "install to the/ANY empty Hard Disk Partition" from this "I386" folder or just expect it to magically appear in the Windows\System32 folder because you changed it?

submix8c replied to BLASH's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
(sigh...) ONE.... MORE.... TIME!!!!!!! Integrate the "Service Pack 3" into your XP (which is apparently RTM/SP1/SP2 and NOT SP3) using nLite or manually. Unattended does NOT mean "install additional stuff after XP is installed" - it means INSTALL ON AN EMPTY HARD DISK, ok? Get with the program! Or are you trying to "fix" some Warez version of XP? You seem to be trying to "replace" a lot of files already in XP/SP3. [snark]More of "geniuses" than you are, smarty-pants...[/snark] -
Yes, it CAN load viruses. SERVICES.EXE can be compromised as well (even worse to root out - look it up). But the OFFICIAL one is NOT a virus. The OP is going totally paranoid with misinformation and misunderstandings (ref: this).
